This interview just really highlights how misunderstood autism is, but amazing for Shelly to share her story!

I think there’s more people who have autism that’s not been diagnosed than the other way around.

they should fetch in a new character or ask Shelly if she would be willing to do a storyline on it.

I've never been diagnosed at 35 but i've got most of the symptoms such as prefer my own space, like to stick to a schedule like going to bed around 11 pm, i don't like being in crowded places, shy with confidence issues, take things to heart, struggle with my emotions, get annoyed at myself if i can't do something (especially if it's simple), i like to plan things in my head such as what video game i want to buy, price and release. I was born with a learning disability due to being born 10 weeks early. Despite all that i'm happy and i have my Xbox to help me relax and watch videos or listen to music while i play.

She looked unhappy when Ed said she struggled to learn lines etc. Sometimes these Presenters get it wrong. She was right to correct him.

That must have come with a lot of relief, but also a lot of grief. At how if diagnosed sooner, life might be different and have been easier. My diagnosis did, at age 20. So great she’s talking about this ❤️🙌Although, most private diagnoses ARE recognised, despite what she said. Just expensive!

I'm a late diagnosis. The waiting list is too long for adults in the uk. I re-wrote the questionnaire out before my assessment. The psychologist told me they never had anyone do that before. I told her the questions needed to be aimed at neurodiverse people

I was only diagnosed last year aged 34. It has really shone a light on why i get frustrated with simple things. Would be good if a soap did do a storyline explaining it so people could us better.

I was diagnosed at 23, on September 20th 2019. Best news of my life to find out this is why I am the way I am and I love the way I am. Just didn’t like people treating me badly and always thought everything was my fault and that I was dumb in the workplace because people treated me that way. I don’t feel like that all the time now. Still have my days though where I do. If I could change one thing, I wouldn’t change myself, I would change others attitudes and behaviour towards people. My mom always taught me even before I was diagnosed, that it is their problem not mine, that I am perfectly me and I know that I am a good worker. It may take me longer to get there though and that’s ok.

Well done, Shelley! You were diagnosed with the DSM-5. I am Australian, and was diagnosed with the DSM-3 in 1971, by Dr. Richard Abud, at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, in Melbourne. I applaud your efforts to understand yourself better. My autism is only very mild.

I’m in my early 30s and I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD and Autism. So many older people are these days and I feel like there’s still a massive stigma around it.

Roy Cropper is a very aspergery character, I'm surprised it hasn't been developed. When your brain works differently, you make different connections to other people and arrive at different conclusions, life gets very confusing. And sensory issues, heightened awareness of one or more of the 5 senses, very upsetting pretending to be fine when you're not, just to fit in.

Also caution I was told, without having someone who has known you since childhood, and would also fill in forms about you, then even if the do decide to forward you for assessment the results will be inconclusive. And they may refuse to referr you.
