Corrugated Steel Raised Bed

How to on making a 4x8 foot raised bed from corrugated steel roofing panels.

Nice video. Perhaps a few things that might be useful to consider. I like the inexpensive conduit side struts for bow control of the side panels. If those were longer and extended above the panels and into the top rail (even 3/4" deep blind holes on the underside of the top rail) they would be pinned top and bottom and less likely to lean out. Also, most corrugated galvanized sheeting is thin 29 gauge, but you can buy thicker/stiffer metal at 20 or even 16 gauge. The resistance to bowing (stiffness) is a cubic factor of thickness increase, so even a small increase has a big effect. 29 gauge is about 15 mils while 22 gauge is 30 mils, so doubling thickness would increase stiffness (reduce deflection) 8x - you may not need those side struts for side bow, but they might help to center the top rails on the sharp top edge of the panels.

Great Idea! I did something similar with galvanized sheet metal flashing in 20" x 50' rolls. you can make 5 beds that are 37.5" diameter and 20" high. Just cut the 50" roll into 10' sections and clamp the ends together to creat 1' of overlap, drill holes and pop rivet this round bed together. Drill from the inside. start right below your top clamp. insert a pop rivet before you drill the next hole. A galvanized steel bed will be stiff enough to stand without any aditional support. It's no different than a flat sheet metal swimming pool. the weight of the soil will stiffen the walls. you can also bend 1" of the top edge over to the inside of the bed every couple of inches all the way around to create a safe and comfortable ledge whch also stiffens the the wall.

How are you liking these beds? I’m looking to build a couple myself. I don’t think I’m going to use the conduit though and just attach a wire between the two middle posts to keep them from bowing.

I have found the conduit helpful to prevent bowing. But if you don't want to use the conduit I would try to frame the sides on the exterior just to prevent bowing. But other than that they are holding up well.
