In 1996 my 18 yo son went missing on his motor bike. I always knew where my kids were. They were responsible kids. When my son wasn’t where he was meant to be within the hour, I called the police. They told me to, “ He’s young, new bike, probably showing it off to his mates. Call again in 24 hours if he doesn’t turn up.” I drove the route I knew he’d take several times overnight and next morning I walked over the range - it was the only place he could have come off with its tight curves, gullies and cuttings - where I may not see him from my vehicle. I found him in a gully under a lantana bush 19 hours after he’d come off the bike. He was on his back, unconscious and had vomited into his lung. 35 minutes later, in an ambulance, speeding to the hospital, his heart stopped. He sustained an ABI, right hemiplegia and aspirational pneumonia but he survived. So much for waiting 24 hours!
