Why are Dayak people leaving traditional jobs to work illegally for mining companies and palm oil plantations? One answer: they pay good money.
When introducing money into a society that historically lives off the land, the newfound hierarchy offsets a way of life. This film displays risks taken in order to survive. It is not that villagers want to destroy their environment and indigenous forests. It is the effect of their choices required to earn money in a new, "modern" society.

Hi, thank you for using your platform to give a voice to this problem. I am a native of West Borneo, I have lived here for about 20 years and witnessed all of these happen before my eyes. I feel sad, angry, and pity at the same time. We have all the good natural resources, but due to the bad human resources and technical know-how, they impede the industry's development. Currently, I am studying fisheries at University. I look forward to becoming a fish instructor, helping the locals of making the best out of our natural resources. Educate them and also give them hope to find another job that is more eco-friendly. Again, thank you for making this video.

I was born in west borneo and I am lucky and privileged enough to currently live in a first-world country. It is much easier to turn a blind eye than having to deal with the feeling of guilt and shame for not going through what these people are dealing with. I can't thank you enough for raising the issue. We need more of this.
