The NBC Hannibal was one of the most twisted love stories ever told. I think it's my favorite show ever.

The show that left me the most disappointed and the show that gives me the greatest joy to this day. Hannibal>GoT

I thought Hannibal was rushed in 3rd season. I loved it but certain things should have been elaborated.

3rd season was definitely rushed. Francis as a character was underdeveloped and the final episode didn't really feel like a final ep, felt like they just had a good finale and tried to scrap up an episode to reach that point

I love a season 4 . Confirmed that Will and Hannibal lived

This is helpful, as someone studying corruption arcs who doesn't want to slog through Game of Thrones to study why that one didn't work. Haha. I gave up on that show after Season 5. Thank you for doing this analysis so I didn't have to! :P

Wondeful essay. I love hannibal story writing and cinematograhpy, absolute masterpiece. The video essay is absolutely great too, helpful on studying how to write a good corruption arc

Thank you for this comparison. It really makes lots of senses and it is really well executed. In other words, trauma is not corruption, nor is it necessary the cause

Oh, I see. If Dany had a Hannibal in her life instead of a bunch of sorry-sap yes men then season 8 wouldn't have been the dumpster fire that it was so clearly was. Got it. Well done synopsis 🤓

4 years late to the party, but. Great essay that surprisingly gave me some new thoughts about Will's character development. Thank you for your work.

Oooo I’m late to this video but this is a great look at how both shows handled one of their main character’s corruption!

I knew how Dany would end up because Miura's "Berserk" is my favorite series and she was very like Griffith (at least, when she was still well written) and I hoped she'd give Jon a betrayal moment that was a epic as Griffith's. I think the first major mistake of her character arc is the way she just breezed out of Slaver's Bay. Didn't set up a democratic ruling body or anything about food/refugees/economy - that could easily be a slog, but not addressing it at all was weird. She could've ended up in Westeros easily winning, but making demands of various houses to help settle and feed her refugees (Including of Jon) and when that goes as well as you'd expect - she retaliates with burning things. It's still totally within character - she's still the hero in her own head and Jon still has motivation to stab her.

Her descent into madness would've worked so much better as a slowburn. I felt nothing when she died. I feel more for the characters on HOTD then I ever did for her.

GOT was ruined when it deviated from the narrative GRR Martin actually wrote.

Tbh, I always thought Hannibal's ending was a big cop-out. I think the best ending for Will would be to confront what he had done, to still find Hannibal intriguing, and to even forgive him--but to choose sanity in the end. I think that would have been a much stronger final note. It would be a great and hopeful metaphor for those struggling with addiction, illness, and poor mental health. A tastefully done redemption arc can be a powerful thing.

That sounds like it does make sense, but the problem with Will is that he TRIED sanity and normalcy. He got with Molly and her son, he really tried to become normal. But he isn’t. He couldn’t even be happy this way. He also wasn’t mentally ill, he had encephalitis in season 1, but after that he wasn’t mentally ill at all. He was deep down someone like Hannibal, even before Hannibal met him. Hannibal saw this, and over the next years we got to where we are now. Will realized he can only be happy with Hannibal, because he’s the only person to see him, and accept him.
