Not that the 130 was super fast. But the 404 was super slow. Hard to not leave that old Peg behind.

Fiat 140 hp 1550 kg 3 speed auto; Peugeot 71hp, 1060 kg 4 speed manual. So the Fiat has twice the maximum power but 50% more weight to lug around and extra transmission slippage. With the twisty mountain road further constraining speed I suspect the Peugeot could plausibly keep up with the Fiat.

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Berlina was even scarcer than the convertible, let alone the coupe. Hopefully because of that that's why it was spared. The Giulia was a common-sight on Italian roads, even still in production, so could easily be sacrificed. Also used exclusively by the Italian police, probably because Alfa Romeo was state owned at that time. Alfas were much more individualistic when owned by the Italian state. The Fiat 130 looked liked an early ex-publicity car. If so got dirt cheap which is why that got destroyed. Looked well equipped too, including a heated rear-window, something relatively new back then & reserved for upmarket cars. The Peugeot 404 & the two Ford Taunus 12M P4s were already wrecks when filming started in Italy, with inevitable results.

The 130 was meant to compete with Rover in the UK, but was rare even when new as large imported cars didn't sell much over here in the early seventies and there were tariffs on cars from the EEC. Once we joined the EEC, bigger imported cars became more common( also the quality of Rover went down the drain in the mid seventies) as the tariffs ended and the later Fiat 132 developed a following for its long equipment list, lowish prices and good performance.

La 404 est un veau en principe... et les voitures italiennes des années 60 (Giulia, Fiat 125...) sont beaucoup plus rapides et maniables même si ça avait été une 404 injection. Pour cette scène, la Fiat 130 est lourde mais beaucoup plus puissante et veloce que la 404... C'est juste amusant et nostalgique !! Bravo !!

132 if not mistaken. Fiat loaded with luxury for time.5 speed gear box's.side windows driver and passenger sides a vizier screen that pulled out and down from roof.loads power but hard on petrol. They rust like no tomorrow but man they were stylish.

The 130 was a really expensive car, in the same class as big BMWs, Jaguars or Mercedes. Here is the 130 A series with a 2.8 V6, in 1971 came a 3.2 V6 165 hp DIN and also a wonderful 130 Coupe (Pininfarina).
