Cortana is at least as good at doing the standard assistant stuff, but then it can also do a whole bunch of contextual stuff like ask multiple linked questions, set reminders based on people and geofences, and automatically give you information about your day like when its time to leave for work or an appointment based on traffic or what time a flight will get in. This is where it blows Siri out of the water. And its why I actually use Cortana and rarely use Siri for anything other than as a novelty. I haven't used Google Now as much.

Also google is a SEARCH ENGINE. Yes, it can do basic commands like set and alarm or send someone a message but whenever you get complicated commands like Calling someone on skype keep in mind that google now also has S voice. So i agree that it is biased for Windows since they have horrible phones now that they get a new feature that they go crazy over because they actually get to put up a little competition, but nothing to go crazy over.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Cortana is the only one that developers can use to add custom commands for their apps. For instance, with foursquare, the developers enabled it to check in when the user asks Cortana to do it. Siri and Google Now don't allow this.

Google has a note taking app called "google keep." It doesnt have to be through gmail. The android note taking app will ALSO play back the recording and share with others.

Google now does save notes to whatever note taking app you set it to do so. If you don't have one then it will default to an email. Google Now is way better than both Siri and Cortana. Granted Cortana looks great and Google Now sounds robotic but I would rather have functionality from Google than a terrible search engine like Bing

I prefer Google. Mostly because when I tried to switch to bing (and I tried so hard to love it), the only way to make it useful would be to attach my Facebook account, and I hate Facebook and don't use it, so even after attaching it, it didn't change anything since I didn't use my Facebook. Overall, they provide "different" results, sometimes one is better, other times the other is better, but I use Google because Google is able to recognize more things and provide a customized card for them, like movies, places, people, etc. (If Google doesn't have any specific information on the thing, it just shows you a Wikipedia clipping). Also, searching on Google let's Google know what I'm interested in, and it will let me know when there's updates on things I want to know about (via Google Now). It's a matter of preference, but Google has more features and is more fleshed out.

I wouldn't say that Android is outdated just because Windows Phone is different. I find a great deal more people prefer the Android way of doing things, I am one of those people. Just have never been one for all those live tiles flipping around constantly draining battery and system resources. I would agree with the iOS hasn't changed its look and feel that much since its inception but to say that Android has had the same UI since Froyo is incorrect...it had a massive overhaul in late 2011 with ICS. Since then it has coasted on the same UI though...we are do for a big overhaul with the next major release though. You can see that in the way Google is reskinning the core apps to a flatter more, dare I say Metro, look. ;)

You also get a higher degree of flexibility and customization in the Android camp. Just simply the nature of being open source though. I wish no ill will on Windows Phone. I like having 3 major players instead of just 2. It promotes more diversity and competition. You can already see each ecosystem taking cues from one another. I think Cortana is awesome, but the channel is called Windows Central. You expect me to believe your opinions are not biased in any way? If Cortana is still a beta, technically it shouldn't be reviewed alongside finished products. If it is, then that means we must judge it as a finished product, or else it is not a fair test, meaning your argument of 'Cortana is just as good, and is only a beta' isn't a sound one by any means. Although I do prefer how Cortana gives an illusion of having much more personality. It makes voice commands feel less robotic when you can ask it questions, and it responds in a much more human-like tone, rather than Siri or Google Now, which are just generic speech synthesizers, and we all know that they have their moments of detachment. However, this is not valid argument when referring to the programs functionality (although it does have a lot of functionality). In short, I do think Cortana is great, but that you chose it for the wrong reasons, as in the end you based your judgement off what stages of development they were in. What's to say Apple doesn't improve Siri? Or that Google doesn't improve Now? To be honest, the only one I really think you shouldn't choose is Google Now, as it has a tendency to associate your commands with searches, rather than functions built into the phone.

For those who may be mislead, the Google Now is a voice-activated app, strongly focused on just web searching, provided by Google on Android devices. Other Andriod devices often come with a separate voice-command feature, like Samsung, for example, uses Google AS WELL AS S-Voice, which (from what I gathered from this video) can do just as much as Siri or Cortana. :)

You are wrong. Windows phone have API for apps to utilize this. Just like foursquare checkin.. You can see examples in Audible as well. If whatsapp were to use this API you can simply say "Whatsapp text aditya I'm on the way" and whatsapp will open and text the contact Aditya. Simple. It's just apps don't utilize these features.

For notes, google now creates notes on Keep. Also you should have tested the strenghts of each one, like for example continuos search in Google now like: "How old is Barack Obama" and "who is his wife" which automatically understands that it refers to Obama, and see how the other 2 handle this.

It's a battle, so they should have taken the best parts of each app and tested how the others perform, also take weaknesses and see if the others have them too. I'm an Android user so i use Google Now, it has a lot of cool features but it also lacks a lot of things, and I'd like to see if Cortana can do the same things and also if she can do things Google now can't(like integration with third party apps)

I'm personally happy with the Windows Phone I have, since it integrates with everything else I own from Microsoft: my PC laptop, my soon to be getting Xbox, and my Zune (yes, I have a Zune, lol). I'm one that likes to do a lot of gaming and tinkering, so I need a machine that can output things well. Apple computers and its other devices are also great when it comes to multimedia such as photo-editing and music, but definitely not optimal for high-end gaming. Android phones looks great, and definitely offer more functionality than Windows Phones and iPhones, but if I were to get an Android, I would not be sure if it will fit in with the rest of things that I own. Overall, I think what phone suits best for you all depends on what you have currently if you own some devices and that can properly integrate with them all. For simplicity, go with an iPhone. If you want more out of your phone, go with Android. If you prefer it in the middle, Windows Phone is a great alternative.

That's probably the most level-headed thing I've ever seen someone comment about phone preferences. Usually someone is saying that one is superior to the other, no questions asked. At least someone else realizes that there are pros and cons to each. I use Apple because I just want my phone to work without it constantly freezing/crashing and because I've got a pretty decent amount of songs in iTunes and it's just more convenient to carry around my phone for phone and iPod instead of carrying two devices all the time. I have my gaming computer and MacBook Pro for real computing needs. Android is great for personalization... if you know what you're doing. Android is also very easy to mess up and get constant crashes. My brother had a Windows Phone (a Titan II iirc) a while ago that seemed pretty cool, but there weren't many apps for it as the Windows Phones were pretty new still, although it was extremely stable compared to Android.

Well, I've had my Zune for a very long time, around the time it came out in fact. It's still functional and does everything I still want it to do (btw, I have a Zune HD). It certainly holds more than my current phone does, but I intend to get a new phone that has expandable memory.

You would also make sure there's at least one note app installed on the MotoX, and make sure you're not using Siri trigger phrases, or Google Now buzzwords, to the exclusion of natural language, because that's just straight up cheating. If you chose your phrases carefully enough, you could make any one of the voice assistants appear as though it understands commands 100% of the time, because it would be picking out weird terms like Cortana's "navigate" phraseology. Most people don't tell their friends that they're just "navigating to the shop for some beer". Reviews like this just make it more difficult to fairly judge the capabilities of each voice assistant.

First of all he asked 20 things that were fair. Secondly: 1 => a major communication app (doesn't matter who it owns, Skype is very big) 2 => one sentence in the advantage of WP but he said that that wasn't completely fair so he repeated the enquiry in advantage of Android and said they scored equally well so this is also invalid. 3 => again all OS did equally well. What's your problem there? 4 => true but again he said all phones did equally well. What's the problem then? If Android would have a note app the result would have been the same: equal performance on all phones (+ Windows phone also doesn't have a note app installed per say because OneNote is integrated) The main thing here is that you should see the demonstration as an example of how good ALL assistants actually are.

Google provided multiple locations to choose prior to launching navigation while the others were actually starting navigation. Hence, Google has a quicker "load" time. However, you'll notice that Siri brings up one that's only 2.6 miles away, while Cortana navigates to one 3.2 miles away (7mins vs 11mins driving).

Jerry Berglund 8.1 really sped up everything on my lumia 620. closing and switching apps along with nicer transitions and absolutely zero lag. There was occasional lag before. I hope it continues to improve, since Bing is part of Microsoft like Google is for their search.

The problem with Siri is they focused on making it a gimmicky joke teller instead of a productive voice assistant like it's supposed to be. Google Now and Cortana seem like they're there to get shit done while Siri is a first day entertainment thing. So I fault myself for really thinking this was an objective comparison. There is no battle, this is clearly "Let's see how Cortana compares to the *other* voice services". When Cortana does something that the others don't, it's a "Cortana wins!!!" When Cortana produces a not-so-desirable result, it's a "They all pretty much do the same thing..." I get that where you're reporting from is already biased, but don't lead us to believe you've got something that we should really listen to and base our opinions of said services. There's better ways of emphasizing your bias and still be objective. I'm not saying this from a x is better than y position. I honestly have not seen Cortana's abilities and was very curious. Your tests were spot on and definitely showed a very good comparison of the abilities and the variation of each service.

I agree. The first part, Cortana is indeed the winner (calling through skype, etc). But the next parts, Google seems to be ahead, and sometimes Siri, while on most tests, Cortana is on the 2nd and 3rd place.

Hotword detection cannot be considered as a feature though. Assistance is made to help make your work easier. WP definitely has the best UI among the three. Honestly speaking, I couldn't read a single text on Android screen in this video. But WP8.1 and iOS looked more clear and vivid. Dunno how many languages Google Now is available in but Cortana is available in 16 most widely spoken languages that too when Cortana is not officially globally released for public!

Cortana is an overall a better Phone assistant because google now is design to be more of an search engine or information hub. As for google now being computers? Again its not an assistant its an information hub. Cortana, when she is out of beta, is designed to be a continually learning AI Assistant that can branch from your phone to your computer to your Xbox One.
