A couple of cool tips: You can resurface old punching blocks to restore the original surface, and you can make really nice handbags from these molds also by splitting the dies with the leather halfway (along the width), leaving the top open.

I have been using buckle guy off and on for a few years, but really dug through their site after seeing your video. I had no idea they had so much stuff! I have wet moulded up to 5" deep. I found that is about the limit. If you're using unbacked leather, you can use PVA glue at the molding stage and it will come out already as one piece. I also used to dry them in a 50 degC hotbox, which really sets the collagen in the leather.

I've been doing this for a couple of years. I'm using 8 oz veg tan. I'll get it molded and let set until it is not completely dry, just slightly damp. Set your oven at 200. Once to temp turn the oven off and place your mold/leather assembly in the oven and let cool in the oven to room temperature. I have found that the oven hardens the leather more than just air dry. You may want to try it to see if there is a difference in results. Weaver Leather has a good video making leather armor which is the same process.

A commonly used technique with contact cement is to: A) Put a thin coat on both sides and let it dry till tacky. B) Apply another coat on one or both sides, but DO NOT let it dry. C) Put the two sides together while the second coat of your contact cement is still wet. This allows you to reposition if necessary or, in this case, allows your sides to slip into place. D) Clamp till dry. Naturally, this works best if one or both sides can breathe a little bit. So, it should work great with leather. So, I'm a little bit curious as to why I haven't seen any leather work videos use this technique. I mean, y'all practically live and die by contact cement.

If your glue is a little dry and sticks too hard to put the layers together, you can spritz the surface with barge thinner and the quickly slide the two together, It will then evaporate and won't hurt the bond of the contact adhesive. Also to avoid some of the wrinkles you can stretch the corners out just a bit and tack them, This will make it stretch into the mold instead of compressing. Obviously you can't go too far or it will rip or won't stretch enough to allow the mold to close. You can reduce the size of the bottom plate so you pull on the leather and tack it to the outside as you close it so you can pull the wrinkles out without having to cut a larger piece of leather.

Hi, Awesome video as always. Been filling a wishlist cart over at buckle guy since you sent me there to find that zipper from the mini wallet video. So, side note: Been working in adhesive manufacturing, development and testing since 2007. Toluene (tall u eene) is what makes it work good. that sweet smell is likely glycedal ether or something to that effect. Not as dangerous to breath, but still not good. Not to say the toluene free isn't good, but i use the standard barge because it has it. Fun fact they use cashew oil quite a bit in adhesives, so that may have been that almond smell.

I do wood working. I would recommend installing some T-nuts, or Wood nut inserts, into each block, of the mold. Then you can adjust the depth (or angle) of your mold, by simply turning a few bolts!

I have been making and using molds like this for many years. WAX your molds with 3 to 4 coats of a clear wax, buffing it clean after each coat. This will keep the molds good for many many years and glue will never stick. I have done carbon fiber and glass the same way.

I've been making this type of mould for about 10 years now. My advice is to fix the mould to the base by screwing from under the base. This way nothing marks the leather.

That's how I have done mine I always use stainless steel screws anyway and coat with a bit of wax to put them in so when removing they come out easily.

Yes, and I always cut a few darts in the leather on the curves which gets rid of any wrinkles. I use a straight cut router bit to cut the mould shape from the top clamp part then line the positive and negative cut edges of the wood with leather for a super smooth finish. A 5mm bit does the job then you can decide how thick to line the cuts depending on the leather you are going to work with. Happy moulding!

However I fully understand your concern. I been doing wet molded bowls and handcuff case for police station for many years and leather for me is great but making my wood mold is something I’m not good at and they are not as accurate in the finish product. You could also use your clamps again on that ruler when you do your cuts, using the edge of the table, and the ruler would clamp down the leather so you don't have to worry about anything slipping?

Standard C clamps can be made to work but one has to add a buffer layer between the metal and the mold. [say 1/8" ply scrap with maybe scrap leather glued to the bottom]. Still, I like your clamps ... fast and easy. My hobby budget is tight so need to cut corners when I can. Thank you for the video and the candor of your presentation.
