One of my favorite bits of early Legends Coruscant lore is that, after the formation of the Empire, Palpatine installed massive planetary shield generators all over the planet to consolidate control over the capitol. Wherever those shields overlapped massive thunderstorms would brew, giving the entire planet the foreboding, gothic vibe we see in the opening cutscene of TIE Fighter.

@RoboticPope
@RoboticPope 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The early video games and audio novel were not "taking a crack" at pronouncing Coruscant. They were saying the real word correctly. The planet's name was a description of what it looked like from space. It was one of Lucas' absolutely daft decisions to change the pronunciation of the planet Coruscant. Coruscant pronounced without the second C is just a meaningless name.

Dromund Kass (From SWTOR) also pulls a lot from the original Had Abbadon concept art. It's not a full city-planet, but the pyramids and temples in the main city really resemble that original concept art, plus the shared fact of being essentially a "dark throne-world." Makes me sad that Exegol ended up being so uninspired by comparison.

I wonder if they just ran out of time on IX. There was some concept art featuring Coruscant for what Trevero was working on before Abrams took over. Because a massive city planet as Exegol would not only have looked cool but it would have answered that question of where did all the stuff come from? If Exegol had been the hidden Sith redoubt where Sith had been funneling resources since the time of Darth Bane it wouldn't be surprising all that it could churn out the first order fleet or the final order fleet. Why those two were not simply the same thing... that's Abrams fault.

Was going to post this ! I'm currently reading Foundation again and Coruscant being Star Wars Trantor is very straightforward
@daniels7907
@daniels7907 4 жыл бұрын
The main difference is that Trantor was not really an ecumenopolis. It's various sectors were under enclosed domes that had been in place for so long that they had even accumulated soil and had plant life growing on them. The planet's ecosystem recovered within just a few centuries after the domes were dismantled for salvage when the Empire fell and agrarian society resumed. Trantor was really a call back to the "caves of steel" cities on Earth before the rise of the Settler movement. Asimov (who was a bit agoraphobic) kept coming back to the idea that future humans would tend to congregate in enclosed cities. The exception being the decadent Spacers, who were shown to often avoid even interacting with their own spouses and ultimately were unable to expand further into space because they could not endure any discomfort or inconvenience - including having to live in close quarters with other people.
@timleber2257
@timleber2257 4 жыл бұрын
I would say the Coruscant is a riff on Trantor. There is a bit in Prelude to Foundation where Asimov writes that the only part of Trantor that was natural habitat was the Imperial Palace. The rest of the planet was one great city.
@daniels7907
@daniels7907 4 жыл бұрын
@@timleber2257 - And yet the novels also state that the palace grounds were heavily-gardened. An emperor actually gets killed by a zealous gardener that he tried to promote to an office job. Of course, maintaining strict continuity in the novels was never a big concern of Asimov's. For example, Caves of Steel and most of the Robot novels depicted Earth as dependent on atomic power. Then in real life Three Mile Island happened. In Robots and Empire, written after the incident, Asimov did an outright retcon and declared that Earth had abandoned nuclear power in favor of solar power millennia earlier.

Silver Edition here, gotta stay up on that widescreen format. I had a mix of different VHS copies from the 80s and early 90s, couple of the grey boxes, a couple with the poster artwork. Was also fortunate enough to see all of the SE in the theaters in middle school, good to have those memories. Yub Nub is better than Victory, change my mind.

I’ve always wondered how Coruscant never had a runaway greenhouse effect cataclysm with all of the air pollution that an city planet would have, even with advanced energy technology. Is there some sort of massive air processing system on the planet, or are we just supposed to suspend our disbelief on that front?

This is part of the reason for all those industrial zones on Coruscant. Various old expanded universe materials talked about the *HUGE* infrastructure of the planet that supported all those inhabitants. Keep in mind that they have the technology in Star Wars. The Death Stars were technically vast artificial worlds when you measured them in *volume* rather than surface area. But they still had comfortable interior life support.

IIRC, in the Legends books, the Yuuzhan Vong conquest was feared to have wrecked the planet’s air recycling facilities, but the good guys later discover that the facilities were left alone because they were organic (huge vats of genetically engineered bacteria) rather than purely technological like the rest of the planet.

In reality all the latent heat from the planet spanning city and the massive population would cook the planet alone. Its why ecumenpoli on this scale are impossible. But the population would also be ridiculously huge, like quadrillions of people.

I just did an entire playthrough of TIE Fighter (Special Edition) and had a very visceral reaction to the officer and secret order guy saying Coruscant, and Palpatine... it just immediately took me out of the fiction, so to speak. Some of the old audiobooks are a trip. I got "The Further Adventures: Planet of the Hoojibs", which has some excellent voiceacting, and weird pronunciations... though the version I have is translated and voiced in Swedish.

I think its pretty safe to say George Lucas was contemplating using Bladerunner's metropolis setting in 1983.. A year after bladerunner was made.. and probably thought it was distasteful at the time and revisited the idea later with the prequels.. Pretty soon numerous franchises would be ripping off the idea of having giant cyber punk cities with flying cars.. Total Recall / Judge Dredd / Altered Carbon..

any true star wars fan gets goosebumps when we see something we have read about or seen i a game make it to the screen one major thing for me was seeing a razor-crest in a live action show as that ship first showed up in the first few missions of starwars bounty hunter jango had one until the mission to Oovo IV this is where he got The Firespray-31-class ( he named slave one ) he destroyed the rest later a few were made off of the designs but slave one was the first and last of the line at the time and the razor-crest was a ship used as a small troop ship by the true Mandalorians jango's one belonged to Jaster Mereel

Many capitals are also the biggest city of a polity. But often they are instead a much smaller city purpose-made as a capital, sometimes so they will do that job better, sometimes to act as a neutral shared seat of government and so side-step the problem of rivalry between existing, big cities. It would have been interesting if the galactic capital had been based on this latter concept.

Could have made sense to mention that he took the idea of a planet covered by a city from Asimov’s work in the 1960s... not that the idea originally came from a 1990s Star Wars book
@daniels7907

Trantor wasn't technically "covered" by cityscape in the same sense that Coruscant was. It had hundreds of interconnected domed cities that were so old that they had even accumulated soil and had plants growing on their outer surfaces. As had been the case on Earth before the Settler exodus, most people on Trantor rarely, if ever, saw outside of the domes except on special trips.

@daniels7907

@@aaronhedgesmusic - Remember that Trantor (as an expy of ancient Rome) only appears after it's fall in the original Foundation novels (and Seldon himself is dead and not a character in them). The capital of the fragmented empire had even been moved off of Trantor (much like the western Roman capital moved to Ravenna). Trantor does not really get developed much in-story until the prequel novels that focus on Seldon before the establishment of the Foundations. But also keep in mind that back in the 1950's they had a very different view of what over-population looked like. Asimov originally imagined Trantor as having a population of around 40 billion. Which is a lot, but nowhere near enough to require that an entire planet be covered in city. Asimov did realize this later on and it was part of the reason for the evolving depiction of Trantor.
@aaronhedgesmusic

Daniel S this seems to be a distinction without a difference. The primary concept of a city planet comes from Asimov, one of the greatest sci fi writers of all time. Not some second rate writer for the Star Wars book. It’s clear that he came up with the idea where all continents were enclosed and had multiple layers under the surface. These ideas were essentially stolen from the Star Wars writer, which is my primary point. Just as Lucas himself also stole many ideas from Herbert’s dune series (desert planet, a drug called spice, a semi-religious order with extraordinary powers, etc)... I don’t really want to nit pick the details of it. Was rather saying give proper credit where credit is due. Obviously the writer of some stars wars book in the 1990s was not the originator of a city wide planet... they just did a very easy copy / paste of some of asimovs work.

I'd imagine the technicalities of depicting a city planet in the 80's would have been very expensive, not impossible but difficult enough to not bother until better CGI came along. we could have had a few establishing shots using miniatures and matte paintings but it would have been quite a task to have more

@@goodmind4940 Yeah, I had that in mind when I wrote that comment, you see in Blade Runner the future City was the star of the movie, they went all out with fantastic miniatures and mattes to create one of the most iconic future city scapes to ever grace the silver screen but it was the whole movie I was thinking having all that investment for just a few scenes might be a bit too must to justify
