It sounds similar to opposed aircraft engines. I was in a rear end collision in a car like this in the 70s, the engine pushed the seat over my cousins and I in the back seat. We were ok, I think they are cool still today.

Funny you say that these motors have been used in light aircraft

Ah, perfect license plate for that infamous car Despite all the complications, this engine layout and design fascinated me for being unique- never seen the fan placed on top of an air cooled horizontal shaft engine

They all are. The VW uses a duct. Porsche used the exact same on the the flat 12 on the 917

Beutiful...we, uh my big brother, had a 1964 turbo 1 baral side draft carb Corvair. We were aircraft techs. Scratch built a side draft intake for a 4 brl down draft. We can relate to your labor of love.

I owned a 66’ Monza in high school. I loved that car even thought it wasn’t a rocket. Carved turns like a champion. Would love to own another one. Just something all guys feel about their first car bought with their own money; nostalgia ?! 😎

We were messing with Corvairs back in the 70's and it was fun especially the rail dune buggy I built with "weedcutter" headers but that "twisted" fan belt had to go because we spun them off every time we redlined it.

They were problems? I'm intrigued by the way the four pulleys were in three different planes, if that's the way to express it. Is the belt a conventional V cross section, or square?

We have a 66 spider w a 4spd. And engine when received. Rebuild trans. We put a 283 v8 in it. Alum heads alum intake w Holley 650. Alum rad. More room in there than you'd think. Replaced susp. Car handles like a vette. 4wdb. Nader was wrong.

It idols at 500. Great car, sounds great. Keep it running until that moisture evaporates. Black means mixture, blue means rings, that was just water. I'm going to have to research these engines... 6er I know, opposing 6? I love the cooling fan and the belt that changes direction. Unique as far as I know. Brilliant. Wouldn't you just love to see Ralph Nader going for a ride? I wonder if he ever drove one...

I used 6 long ram tubes curving around from a center mounted Holly and that ram effect would spin my posi about 3500 every time. Later I put the turbo from a 215 Olds with a 2" SU and went looking for Vetts and 911s or anything else that needed smoking.

I’m officially jealous. Love these corvairs. Especially with the second gen. Then in the early 80’s BMW ripped off the design nearly verbatim and called it the 6 series.
