Sometimes it takes just one note to establish your authority. That’s deep. You made me put away my cheap headphones and put on my Beats headphones to listen to that organ solo again in better quality.

I love watching your breakdowns, Sean. In the jazz world, they call those triads over the tritone - Upper Structures. And some will give it a number as a reference. So, for example, a C13 #11 might be a D major triad over an E tritone (rootless) or an Upper Structure 2 major (D is the second note of C, and you play a major triad.) Other ex might be upper structure #4 minor (You play an F# minor over the E tritone / or with the root, C, E, Bb. Anyway all this theory means nothing if you can't switch over to hearing it. And this is why I follow your channel. You have AMAZING ears, and great tips how to develop our hearing. Thank you!

Well putting it that way, I really like that concept. this is my first time hearing the naming system, really cool man, noted!! Im going to look into this concept more and as usual have my own way of presenting it at some point

Sean, this video highlights so many of the points that you have emphasized in your teaching over the years. While watching the clip, I kept asking myself the question, 'what is his approach?' Your teachings are helping me develop the process to ingest masterclass performances like these. Respect bro. Keep up the good work!!

This is a wonderful video, Sean. You have a far better ear then me, but it’s encouraging that you think in similar terms. In jazz vocabulary, we call it ‘upper structure’ chords when you think of a different triad over a root or a tritone. For example, a Cb9b13 is a Dbm triad with a 3 and b7 (and the bass plays the root). That seems to be similar to what you’re saying here in this video. Anyway, I really appreciate all of your lessons and it’s really helped my playing.
@SeanWilsonPiano4 жыл бұрын
For sure man, great concepts. Yeah I love the language of triads and appeals to the gospel musician in me but the way “upper structure” terminology has a really nice ring to it. Thanks!!!!

I love watching this video but the one thing you talk about that some musicians don’t talk about in music theory or jazz theory is inversions especially in jazz theory. There is two notes intervals with one inversion, to inversions in Triad chords Except for the diminished chord has one and the diminished seventh and augmentation chords do not have inversions they’re altered by changing the notes. Dominant seventh and major seventh chords have three inversions. I could talk about chord extensions but it’s too much information right now but learning inversions is crucial in music theory and jazz theory and I love watching his video🙂
