After seeing video of this and other STOL competitions, I have to wonder if banging the tailwheel off the ground is really productive. It could be me, but the ones that didn't seemed to get off the ground just about as quick.

It’s not the intent to just bang it on the ground. The intent is to reduce AOA enough to fly as early as possible. Often I miss it by a hair and pay a big penalty in a much longer takeoff. If you pull too soon, it’s a doggged roll as it lumbers off the ground. Unless you’re Steve Henry or Jason Busat…. Those guys just go for a rip! I understand your comment though. Some of the guys just fly it off. Which is shorter you think? 🤷‍♂️

@@flycory I have some tailwheel time myself, so I understand what you mean about why you would want to pitch forward. It reduces drag and increases lift. The part I question is why some of these pilots abruptly pull back on the stick so hard that it causes the tailwheel to recoil. Most tailwheel springs don't have dampeners, so they act like main gear with bungee chords when you land to hard. In other words, they bounce. It seems to me that the tailwheel bouncing and causing the plane to pitch down momentarily, thus momentarily reducing AOA, would have an overall negative effect on ground roll vs. a firm but smooth increase in stick pressure. In other words, it seems to me that the best strategy would be not to hit the tailwheel on takeoff, but to pull back just far enough that you almost hit the tail wheel as you are climbing out.
