An epically deep poetical description of the Norwegian Night Sky! Well said Cory! 😄 I do however have some questions about the one part You guys unfortunately couldn’t cover up close… the Towers! How is it that the Chairs\Carts simply pass over the Tower Wheels? What guarantees [if anything 😅] that with some side wind or passenger motion the chair takes the line & slips right or left off the wheels completely? Or, worse, the chair’s clip detaches from the line all together while it’s passing over the wheels? Also, is it a must that the cable line is all one single continuous cable of metal threads, even if it’s going for hundreds of Kilometers? I think it would be a major industrial challenge as opposed to making modules of a set length [say 100 meters] & connect them together… If that’s actually already the case, how does the chair/cart clip smoothly pass the connection ‘knot’\mechanism instead of being stopped by it or, similar to the Tower Wheels risk, detaching the chair from the cable? Worked as an electrician for 9 years on a ski field in new zealand. You have 2 main safety circuits on a chairlift. Stop circuit - includes stop buttons and other limit switches etc. This would stop the lift quite slowly. And emergency stop circuit - this would include E Stop button, cable position forks, break limit switches and rollback monitoring. A rollback that doesnt stop would be catastrophic. This would stop the lift very quickly. You should do a season as a spark there. Its alot of fun, along with being very rewarding when fixing the lift it it breaksdown.

@@edc1569 Thats right. You have a service brake, which is the flywheel brake shown in the video, and you also have an emergency brake which operates on the main bullwheel that the cable runs around. Emergency brake stops the lift much faster, and you will noticeably feel the bounce in the lift if you are sitting on it, especially with older detachable chairlifts like the one in this video.

4:05 That power quality stuff is actually the DC variable speed drive for the main lift motor. 9:01 The big blue thing is a DC motor, and all the noise is from the forced cooling fan on it. I’m guessing that the motor is about 450kW. DC motors and drives are cool, much torque at zero speed. Nice work Cory.

I'm a sucker for big-style engineering and seeing this kind of equipment is like candy to a baby for me. These kinds of things are the everyday (or once in a lifetime for me) items that you use, never giving a second thought to. But in the back of my brain (much younger mind back then) I was thinking, I'd love to know and see how this lift works and runs. These kinds of things are mindblowing until you start working on them every day. Driving an HGV was kind of scary for me until I actually passed my HGV licence. But now I do it without even thinking. This must be the same phenomenon. Thoroughly interesting and thanks to Chris for the very informative walkthrough.

Wicked mate. This is what it is content, not the same old solar installation or board change or car charger... And Chris was a outstanding fellow, in my home country no one would do that kind of tour for a visitor on any thing similar, because is a hassle for them. HMI - Human Machine Interface, which is normally a touchscreen controller. PLC - Programmable Logic Controller, a type of tiny computer that can receive data through its inputs and send operating instructions through its outputs. A PLC's job is to control a systems functions using the internal logic programmed into it.

5:31 Before PLC’s these break forks were all connected in series, if the circuit resistance was 0, it was ok to run. Each fork would bypass a resistor, so If a fork was broken it put a resistance into the safety circuit. By measuring the circuit resistance you could tell at which tower the broken fork was at. Neat aye.

@@corymac customer supplied it, I did Google and there is at least one importer that has MyEnergy in their sortiment. It was cool that it knew there was SolarPV without telling it. Just installed the CT on the main incoming and the screen showed generated power. We have bi-directional DNO supplied remote meters so no additional metering devices for sold energy needed, the DNO handles that

Really interesting, and a great example as to why control systems for these things should never run on a consumer OS like Windows XP, clearly the system can continue to run for many years to come but the lifespan of a Windows OS is vastly shorter than the devices it is controlling :(
