We get a really nice view of your wedding band here. A row of princesses and two sets of baguettes- super pretty! Glad you went for yellow gold, too. The way you work, white gold would just be waaay too much hassle. Makes your stones look bigger, too! Tell whoever picked it out they picked out well!

Tim.. I know a little bit about the medium you were using so I will share. These are not true "iridescent" paints. In fact they really aren't "paints" in the normal sense at all. Paint is pigment in a binder. These are called INTERFERENCE COLORS. They are specially milled mica flakes coated with titanium in an acrylic binder. The flakes don't really have much color at all unlike pigments or metallics. Different thicknesses of the mica cause different color reflections/refractions when light hits them at a certain angle. That is the "pop" you spoke of. When the light is not at that angle, the interference colors are very pale or even white. The reason why you don't want to build up thick layers is that you create opacity since the mica flakes can't contrast with the dark underlayer even when the light is right. Dark bases show off the interference colors best. On a white base you can barely see the colors even at the right angle. Iridiescents are typically metallic paints that have some shimmer. They are in a sense similar to interference colors in that the angle of the light causes that flip effect or chatoyancy. Nevertheless, iridescence is not the same as interference. You did a terrific job of figuring out how these darn things actually work and created a really cool project. I spun up a shallow platter-bowl this week and painted the inside with black gloss enamel and tomorrow I will be trying out your techniques. Thanks for the great video.Bree
@BreeXD45C8 жыл бұрын
BTW... don't thin the interference color with Flow Aid. Use Airbrush Medium. The reason is that Flow Aid (which reduces surface tension) is not made with acrylic polymer. If you thin acrylic paint or in this case interference color more than 30% with water or the like, you reduce the film strength since there isn't enough acrylic polymer to cross link and create a stable film. You run the risk of having the color flake off in the future since there isn't enough binder to hold it on the wood. Airbrush medium is very thin acrylic polymer so it is perfect for thinning the color. You can a drop of Flow Aid if you wish. Normal dilution of Flow Aid is 1 part Flow Aid to 20 parts water. A drop or two in the airbrush medium is all you need or want. Bree

Brianne Corbett How interesting and informative! Thank you for the detailed info, this is very useful to know. I wonder if you can mix fine glass beads with any acrylic paint, or even mica chips sold loose, so that you can create your own iridescent paint mixes. Some of the higher end acrylic colors are superb, and unusual. For those who don't understand CHATOYANCY term: Chat (Sha) is Cat in French. Chatoyancy means a gleam like a cat eye. Some gemstones have this gleam such as Tiger Eye in both ochre and reddish brown. So does a star sapphire, fiber optic beads, etc.

Hi Tim Enjoying your turning videos as always. FYI Chestnut products are sold in USA by Craft Supplies, Peachtree and a company in Texas called Wood something or other. Due to REGULATIONS, excuse me whilst I clear my throat, the Ebonising spray cannot be shipped by airfreight etc! Many of us in UK rely on Chestnut for our finishes, great products. Cheers Roger

Thanks for the kind words. I have searched those companies and can only find a finishing wax and a series of spirit stains. If you can shoot me a link to the sanding sealers and top coats I would love to try the products.

Hi Tim Chestnut products are available from believe it or not www.chestnutproducts.co.uk/ and he has three US dealers, one is Wood World of Texas. However none of the US resellers sell all the Chestnut products due to shipping restraints on certain types of liquid. I was in the wood working tool business and about 5 years back these stupid regulations came in to play and so I was no longer able to ship the best woodworking tool lubricant and rust protector called Dyna-Glide by airfreight. It is the best product for rust protection as it does not affect wood like some silicon based products. These regulations are the problem I think Terry the owner of Chestnut Products faces. It is a shame because it means American wood turners are deprived of products that most UK and European turners use. By the way a friend of mine, Peter, used your latest colouring techniques to finish a box he had turned which was modelled on a Cindy Drozda style. He borrowed my colours as I had picked them up at show recently so he had access to the iridescent colours you used. Peter only had one problem and that was on thinning the paint as we did not have any of the MagicFlo thinners although he will have by early next week. Keep the videos coming as we like to learn plus we enjoy your humour. Regards Roger

that last green spot you painted almost looked like flames/ghost flames which is pretty popular. to do this idk if you needed an airbrush. the blower you can put at end of air compressor to blow off your work space would probably work fine at low pressure. . but if you learn to airbrush you can do some crazy airbrushing on your wood. though that is another skill to learn.

Tim, how would it look if you applied your "cosmic cloud" on top of that gorgeous grain of the maple? I would think your natural wood grain would add yet another layer on your already intriguing cosmic cloud... I would think it would be an amazing look.

I used to use that precise medium dilator with acrylic paints, in facts it has 2 effects on paint. 1- Exactly as you explained; it liquifies the paint. 2- It extends the drying time required for the paint to set It the combination of both effects that allows you to use that paint gun so extensively without drying your paint and creating undesired creases.
