@@Cosmoknowledge That is a very weak argument. That data has singular, simple to control origins. If NASA what you to calculate a 30,000km miss they can give you that data to add up to that. I'm not implying that is what's happening. The other logical inconsistency is to acknowledge the Yarkovsky effect and suggest certainties with regards to longer-term orbital mechanics and the impacts on gravitational assists; these are permanently compounding possible outcomes. The simple fact is, an event such as this has been in the religious texts for millenia and this rock they named so innocently is the best candidate for this generation. So, while I hope you are correct, I think you are very wrong. Quite simply, the powers that be will never be honest once the truth is known and all they need is an event to get all their folks to a safe place...like a funeral of a monarch or something. There will be alarms going out, Engineers and Scientists racing ahead of time to do their best. My prediction is this, in case, NASA or some other agency does predict an asteroid crashing onto Earth, the mass hysteria and the preceding madness may end up killing many people more than the damage the Asteroid may have caused. Hell, there is a chance, people start rioting till the last moment, robbing stores, almost killing each other, or drive miles to be with their loved ones, with critical services taking a HUGE HIt. And the worst part, if the asteroid misses earth, life would still never be the same - the only good thing would be, less population and comparatively more resources to share.

For example, concerning the one that flew by a week or so ago, a science news article I read described that it would be "terrifyingly close to Earth" at 1.2 MILLION miles. We are underestimating the diameter. It's probably 500m. It's not apophis that is the problem it's the number of small 100m objects that are orbiting it. Large asteroids usually have companions orbiting them. There are several examples of this for 800m range rocks. The chelyabinsk blast was a smaller rock orbiting 2012 DA14 was a 50m rock that made a close pass but it had the 15m chelyabinsk asteroid orbiting it that did hit from a different direction because its orbit is likely large and elliptical.

@@ernestimken6969 The James Webb telescope was never hit by a meteorite, because a meteorite is a meteoroid that manages to get through Earth's atmosphere and impact the surface. Also, the meteoroid that hit the JWST's was less than .1 millimeter in diameter. The only reason it did any damage is where it hit, and because there is no friction in space, so objects fly around at great speeds. Anything hitting Earth loses mass by burning up while entering the atmosphere. Also, no offence, but yes, NASA doesn't track every single fuckin' meteoroid that's about one tenth of a MILLIMETER in diameter. Space is full of micrometeoroids, but they don't and won't impact anything or anyone. Actual objects of notable sizes (y'know, bigger than grains of sand) are humongous distances away from each other.

Folks, that isn't just close, it is razor's edge close. That is nine times closer to Earth than the moon is! It would take only a miniscule of variation in the orbit to send Apophis directly into Earth with such a close approach. And, further, I ask you.....if NASA, in fact, knew that Apophis was highly likely to impact Earth....do you really think that they would tell us so? Can you imagine the outcry and panic that would result if they were completely honest with us poor shlubs? Think about it people.
