I am really surprised to learn that Corbu and Mies van der Rohe actually drew on many classical designs. The influence classicism had on architecture that persists even into modernity really goes to show how drastic the modern architectural revolution was! Thank you for the super enlightening resource!

I'm from a community college in illinois and I'm so excited for this even though I switched my majors from architecture to psych. I will always be an architecture hoe and due to this current pandemic, I will treat it as a class as it will give me something to do and allow me to learn more about what I love:)

@@abhay6445 I will say that yes, I finished it and I just finished it yesterday. I did about 1 class per day and only did them on weekdays. sadly, when I got to the end, it seems that there were more lectures but they just weren't posted. regardless, I finished the entire playlist and I had lots of fun drawing things out and learning how one architectural style influenced the other. critically, sometimes the professor got a few facts mixed up every now and then (people will usually talk about it in the comments) but nothing too bad. jacqueline gargus is "fabulous!" (you'll see what I mean when you take this class lmao). she's absolutely hilarious. part of me wishes I kept that major so I could have had her in person at the knowlton school of architecture in ohio:) happy learning! all love from an artist and architecture hoe

I know this video is old - and the comments probably aren't read - but I'm so curious as to what happened to all of the institutions that built these "High art" architecture buildings in early America (1800s) - it seems like every city started with amazing state and federal buildings, or incredibly elaborate hotels - to an artistic standard that we just don't see today! It seems like it was so easy in the 1800s to just stand up an incredibly beautiful building - but we never hear about the (assumedly expansive) industry that made this happen. Any chance you can dig into this? Thanks!

No, there are so many things the Architect needs to learn and history is just part of it. If you're trying to understand Architecture study "Theory of Architecture".

I have questions! So you mean imitation in architecture is good ? bad ? or just design process ? Have you think about why ? Why architects have done that ? Not like other art. One of the reason is, I think, architecture has many restrictions such as structure, finance and intimacy etc.

Exactly. Actually, I'm a great admirer of Prof Jacqueline Gargus, the speaker here. But this whole "deconstructionist", minimalist thing is a hoax, like much of modern art. The Emperor has no clothes. That's why this kind of elitist sleight of hand has to be "explained" - usually defensively; sometimes in advocacy - in the argot of the proponents of modern art and architecture - an argot which students of architecture (and I dare say, academics) have to pretend to understand in order to get decent grades - or a job. The fact is that only a tiny minority of people admire this kind of architecture (as opposed to finding it a bit of a Disneyesque novelty to visit) - much less live in it.

hit the nails on the head. the only redeeming quality of some of the modern architecture is when they show us sleek, platonic planes, which aren't creative but can bring some clarity. but everything else deconstructionist and abstract is almost always ugly and repulsive and require endless mental justification just to bear looking at it
