So I only ever entered a cosplay competition once and it was last year at Dention Comic Con. I made my own version of Topegi from Pokemon and forgot like half my accessories, BUT I won Judges Choice First place. The prizes were meh. We all got varrying gift baskets ranging in size.

Just a quick question for entering cosplay contests. I know that if you buy the cosplay you shouldn’t enter and pass it off as your own (obviously) but what if you buy a dress unrelated to that cosplay modify the details a little bit, add accessories, etc. would that count as original since the dress wasn’t originally created for that cosplay, or would that count as theft since I didn’t make the majority of the outfit. Currently I have a nightmare before Christmas black patterned dress that I am turning into a Ruby Rose (RWBY) season one cosplay. I switched the ribbon to red and painted the underskirt, and added a shirt underneath, and a belt, but aside from the shoes and hair that’s pretty much it.

It really depends on the con! I would look at the rules (they are usually posted on the con website) Ex: RICC only required for novice cosplays to be 50% altered or handmade but the con I'm going to in about a month requires it to be all handmade except for accessories (aka boots, jewelery, wig, etc)
