Something to keep in mind, if you are new to oil painting, that drying time depends on brand, and often you need a solution to make the paint able to dry. I didn't have this solution for my oil paint, and it took 2 weeks to dry. I had only written my name, and the layer was also really thin. Just so people doesn't get too surprised, if the paint isn't dry after 48 hours.

Love your cosplays! But if you are going to use oil paints I highly recommend you wear disposable gloves for the smudging, also it should be used in a very, very well ventilated area, oil paint is very toxic. I'd recommend trying water mixable oils, they are less toxic and can be thinned with water unlike regular oils. The end result looks great though!

Very cool info. Wood glue as a primer/filler---never would have thought. Do you find the wood glue ever cracks or peels? Does any of the paint peel or crack? I never thought to use oil paint for something like this, I would have immediately went to acrylic as I have used it to paint fabrics. Thanks for this video. I never thought of creating cosplay / costume items like this but might give me another creative avenue to follow

Liked! Subscribed! Questions: Why did you use acrylic for the blue, say instead of spray paint? Does the acrylic chip or scrape off easily?
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
No it doesnt chip off easily, it kind bonds with the woodglue primer. I like acrylic paint, I can mix my own colors and stuff, but if you want to use spraypaint you can. I just find that some spray paint is difficult to paint onto with oils and some spraypaint is like sticky and just not pleasant XD

Hi, great work. I have a question for you. Would you paint before hot gluing a piece or does it make no difference to paint after? Because i'm wondering if the hot glue will adhere to the paint and not the foam itself making the connection not strong.
@KinpatsuCosplay9 жыл бұрын
zupinu2000 No never paint before you glue pieces, the glue will stick but if you try to bend or form the pieces after paint they will crack and get messed up, there is also a change you will mess up the paint job if you glue after wards and mistakes cannot be easily fixed then. Rather build your entire piece first and then paint after.

When you are sealing the foam do you just spread a really thin coat of the wood glue all over the foam? Any suggestions on how to do this evenly?
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
Its not really thin. its coated with enough glue to cover the entire piece but I make sure that I don't put too much that it starts running. I use the woodglue straight out the bottle and just dip my paintbrush in water to help smooth it out and spread it but that's it, I don't thin the glue :)

Hi, thank you so much for the video! Would you still get the same affect if you use acrylic paint ?
@KinpatsuCosplay8 жыл бұрын
You won't be able to blend acrylic paint like this, acrylic paint dries anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes, it would dry while you're still busy trying to blend it. That's why I use oils instead of acrylics cause they take longer to dry
@nyxdwolf8 жыл бұрын
You can, but you would have to work fast and dry brush it out to blend with the dry paint. You might have to use a slightly higher grade of paint because cheaper paints tend to be less pigmented and more filler which requires more paint. Although that can be used as an advantage. Using water will help the drying time. It just takes practice to learn how to manage with the fast dry time and control of the paint. There are products made to slow down dry time, but you have to be careful with those because they can mess up the paint. Also some slow dry products are meant for the brand their made for, i.e. Golden brand name products. I don't personally use them, but I've seen them work.

You can buy woodglue at any hardware store, it doesnt need to be this brand, and you just put it on with a paintbrush and you can wet your brush to help smooth it out :)

What's the difference between wood glue and PlastiDip? And is it recommended to use additional or other primers before applying the paint? I'm reading that using glue may lead to cracking if the foam is bent.

Yes if you bend the foam it will crack. This is why I've started using worbla instead of foam for some pieces. Im sorry but I have no idea about plastidip and additional primers. This is just the way I paint for both worbla and craft foam :)

Yes it's craft foam / EVA foam. And paint will stick to it I dunno why they would say that O_o The reason you use woodglue is cause the foam has a spongy texture. After a few layers of glue the surface is smooth to paint on :)

Hi there! I was actually trying to find out how did you make the texture (the swirls) on the armor? Did you just sculpt craft foam and attach it to the plate?
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
yes, Its just thick pieces of craft foam cut out and then i use a dremel to sand them into rounded shapes and stick it on
@oceanpirate528310 жыл бұрын
Currently I'm using fun craft foam,but they have it in 2mm and in 6mm. 6 is thicker,but how do I get raised eges with it? Placing two layers on each other and covering with fabric is no option,since I only use paint. Do you have any idea how I should make it? And would a yoga mat give the same effect too?
@KinpatsuCosplay10 жыл бұрын
raised edges as in the details? I normally make a base shape out of one sheet and then cut details out of another piece and lay them on top, to get them rounded I just sand them edges with a dremel, then you prime the whole thing and then you can paint it :)
@oceanpirate528310 жыл бұрын
Oh,that sounds really helpful! ^^ I'm just trying to make a Sylvanas costume,but she has the details ontop and around the shoulders like you have shown in this piece with the silver on the outside.
@kurogitsune11010 жыл бұрын
Uhhmmm... Can I ask something? How do you make those swirly designs? Can you use sand paper instead of a dremel? And about the base, can you recommend something other than wood glue? I'm not a big fan of wood glue since it always cracks and always leaves me frustrated with my armor.
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
I made them with 1cm craft foam that I then sanded with the dremel. You can try hand sand it? I've never done it that way but you can try :) and you can also try gesso primer instead of woodglue. unfortunately I'm yet to find a way to stop foam armor cracking.
@kurogitsune11010 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for the fast reply! ^-^ Gesso? I guess I can try. I'm making the Valkyrie Leona armour and I'm a bit in a deadlock with the design.
@Celiaa66610 жыл бұрын
Tayla Barter I sanded with the dremel like you did for my first armor but I didn't get smooth enough in some areas and I don't know what to do. I tried sanding it more, I used glue and later liquid vinyl but it still can be noticed. And when I painted silver it got more noticeable...
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
you need to use smoother sand paper and then hand sand those ripped pieces off and then use a heat gun tot press it smooth :)

Kinpatsu i see. i want to paint my spawn gauntlets. please recommend me the mix color to achieve the correct red (realistic red, not comical red).. :D, and the gradation colors. sorry asking to much. It's my first time to paint. And the final paint, do we need to clear coat? (doff / glossy?) thanks a lot ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J8D51ND7L.jpg
@KinpatsuCosplay9 жыл бұрын
Wow I really can't do that man I'm sorry XD You will have to find that mix yourself, and for gradation colours you just use darker shades of that red and black. You can put a clear coat on if you want, I don't really do it out of laziness but it is recommended to keep the paint looking good. Whether it is glossy or matt is up to you :) just depends on the kind of finish you want.

Acrylic paint or oil paint??? if your acrylic paint isn't dry by now something is very wrong XD acrylics take a few minutes or maybe an hour max to dry, Oil paint can 1day - 1 week to dry depending how much you use, the amount I use is so minimal that it takes only 24 hours :)

Hey Tayla, oil paint is really annoying... How do you clean your dirty oil paint finger? Is there any other way i can use? Like a foam
@cosmetologistwanabe10 жыл бұрын
Why do you prefer oil paint over acrylic? (Just wondering) c:
@taylabarter452310 жыл бұрын
Well I've always been a painter and I just work better with oil paint because it dries slower and allows me to blend very easily and If I make a mistake I can just wipe it off. I've never been very good with acrylic paint, It dries very quickly so i don't get a lot of time to work with it and blend it properly, I also find that sometimes if you try paint over the acrylic paint again it can lift and exposes the underneath layers of paint >< So I just find it a bit more difficult to work with than oils. The only down side of oils for me is that you have to have your stuff painted at least a day or 2 before the Con or it wont dry in time because it dries very slowly. So its not the best for like last minute/night before stuff :P

+JCsweetbucket No it won't work for this technique. by the time you paint around the whole thing the acrylic paint will be dry. to blend acrylic paint you need to use a different technique since it dries too quickly. Oil paint dries slowly so you can take your time getting the blending perfect.
