One thing that really bothers me is when people take a cosplayer's picture without asking them. For one, the picture is probably going to turn out badly anyway, because the cosplayer isn't going to be posing and/or they're going to be looking away from the camera, and also, like you mentioned in this video, it's the cosplayer's right to ask that their picture not be taken! I'm a cosplayer and I am completely open to taking pictures; I LOVE it when someone asks me for my picture! There was this one year where I was cosplaying as Hanji from Attack on Titan and carrying around a sign that said "Have you seen Bean?" on it and graciously, a lot of people wanted to take my picture. Then there was this one person who walked past me while I was standing off to the side, they took their phone out, and snapped a low picture of me while they were walking. Honestly, if they would have asked me for a photo, I would have been more than happy to pose for them! It was just an all around weird experience. Great video, though! A very important topic to talk about!

+KairixXxSora16 I hate this so much, its rude and you're ruining a potentially good photo by not asking the cosplayer, or even motioning toward the camera or something, like i want you to have a good photo of me in case you put it on the internet or something

I'm TOTALLY cool with posing! Especially when I'm in a group. When I was cosplaying Levi I was eating ramen and this guy took a picture of me. like, dude, wtf. and some other ppl took pics of me smiling. THATS A NONO FOR LEVI But another time when cosplaying as Grell, I was sitting on Sebsatian cosplayer's lap and we were sharing pocky. (of curse, lots of pictures were taken) and we didn't pose. but it was obvious we knew ppl were taking photos bc there was a crowd gathered. the worst is the "surprise selfie" ugh. those guys are the worst

Also when a cosplayer is on their cellphone or going to the restroom the polite thing to do is just not ask them at that moment I cant count how many times I've been asked to take a picture while Im on my phone :/

I just want to clarify something because i feel like the point of this video was lost on some people. I am NOT talking about taking candid shots at all! This video has NOTHING to do with it. the whole point is to say that if you are wanting a person to pose for you, there are sometimes when you shouldnt ask them to. Thats all. If you into taking candid shots of people thats another topic all together.

+Convention Reviews Some of your examples have happened to me in the past. I have a large mega blazaken cosplay that can get extremely uncomfortable and hot after a while, forcing me to take the large head off. Many people would ask for a photo when I was trying sit down and rest. It got real tiresome after a while.

I've had a person come ask me for a photo while I had my wig and shoes off as I was trying to eat for the first time all day but the worst part is that they looked like they were annoyed by me when I was trying to put my wig and shoes back on for them

As a cosplayer and con-goer, I always ask other cosplayers if I can take their pictures first. It's just normal courtesy. But I will admit I did ask resting or eating cosplayers for pics once or twice, but I always try to be as polite as I could about it. I usually excuse myself for disturbing them while they're taking a break, and if I could snap a quick pic of them when they're done. I've been lucky enough that they're were more than happy to oblige me, and I let them know how much I appreciate it. But if someone were to tell me no, I'd simply thank them for their time and excuse myself again for disturbing them, then wish them a fun con anyways! It's really not that hard to try and not be "THAT person" at a con. I myself has been asked while resting in my Zant cosplay for pictures, and I'm always happy to strike a pose for someone who asks nicely. Luckily for me, taking my top armor on and off wasn't that much of a hassle and it was pretty lightweight. (( I say was because that armor is no-longer usable thanks to 3 years of wear and tear. RIP. )) But I would 110% understand if someone refused to be photographed if they had to put back on something complicated or hindering. I think that overall, it all depends on the situation, cosplayer and convention tbh. In the end, it's just easier to ask and see? Worse case scenario you'll be told no, or "come later around this time at this-place". And that's very much ok!!

At Naka kon 2016 there was a person that kept taking pictures of me, they'd ask for a picture whenever they saw me or something. When I was going to get food for the cosplay contest because It was a long sit and me and my friend were hungry, the guy came up to me and some other people in cosplay waiting in line and said "Can I take your picture" Me and the other two people weren't trying to get our picture taken, we where trying to get some food and stuff. He clearly saw that we were trying to buy food and bugged us for a picture anyway. Then after I was done at the contest I went back to the table I sit at to rest and he came up to me again, I had almost everything off of me and my head was down and he still came up and asked me AGAIN if he could take a picture of me. I literally told him "This is the third time you've asked me all day, and your asking me at the worst times possible, so please, no."

I remember day 2 of otakon Vegas this year. Some girl at McDonalds recorded me, my bf, and my friends while we were eating. She made fun of us definitely but I wanted to go up to her so bad and say, "hey if you're gonna post it up on KZbin you might as well credit us."

I agree so much on stopping for photos when in a rush . I missed a whole panel and 10mins of a meet because I kept being stopped I was clearly running with a scythe and it was super difficult to even walk around let alone run. I always think oh I stop for 3 maybe 4 but I got stop at least 8/9 times I enjoy the photo taking but people could see me running and rushing pass but still came after me and tapping my shoulder to ask . I should of said no but I was too kind to do so
@lutacos

I completely agree with this, I've had something similar happen when i was cosplaying challenger Ahri from league of legends, for those who don't know she has 9 massive tails, like the ones i made weighed 7kg and were harnessed to my lower back. when you're in a busy dealers room trying not to attack peoples legs and small children with your tails and can barely hear your friends speak its so easy to not notice someone trying to talk to you, (i usually wear glasses too but wasn't for that cosplay so that didn't help pretty much deaf and blind) but the people i was with were telling me i was ignoring people and one person actually got really mad at me over it. also for anyone looking for photos with a cosplayer the dealers room is the worst place for it ask them if you can take a photo and try to go to a wall or somewhere out of the way of others. oh and another thing, if someone has tails or well any part of cosplay, maybe ask to touch them instead of running up behind them and touching them as they are walking, i had a few come apart at the harness because i was unaware people were grabbing them.. Sorry for the rant~

Truth!! I'm so glad this video is a thing, as a cosplayer myself i can totally relate. I'm sure many other cosplayers can relate when ur busting a gut to get to the bath room and u start walking real fast but get stopped every 5 steps for a photo. And as this video brilliantly stated they say 'its one picture, its not a big deal', and then to be polite you take the picture to only be stopped by another one. Then you get frustrated and then are classed off as a jerk.

Thank you so much for making this! As a cosplayer I really appreciate people respecting when to take photos. ;0; I was the Cyan about 2 minutes in. Ironically enough, at YoumaCon in particular I was trying to eat in demon stocking (had my bracelets and gloves off and everything), and this guy was insisting on a picture even though I was asking him if he could wait. It can be really hard for people to say no sometimes (I'm terrible about that, I hate disappointing people) so respecting when cosplayers are busy is a really important thing! Besides, most cosplayers will be happy to take a photo when they're done eating or resting or whatever they're doing, so just be patient. Also as a side note for photographers: if a cosplayer is in a private shoot, please ask politely and understand if they say no! Sometimes the cosplayer can't wait because they've paid for a certain amount of time for a photoshoot.

I've been going to conventions and cosplaying for about 5 years now, and I'll admit in the beginning I never outright tried to sneak a picture, but there was a time or 2 that if a cosplayer was stopped and posed for another photo request I took a picture. I'm not proud of it, and I've learned since then partly due to videos like this one. The only kind of negative experience I guess you could say I've had was as I was walking back to a convention center from my hotel once a lady not even attending the con was snapping pics or videos on her phone, but then I realized it's one thing at a convention, but you can't really control peoples' actions who aren't even there for the convention. Also, each year I tell myself I'm going to get over being shy and ask people for photos (yeah maybe one day that will happen) and one of the things I try to keep in mind is where we are at at the time. For example, probably the biggest convention I currently go to is A-Kon in Fort Worth, Texas. A lot of the time when I see a cosplayer that I would like to ask for a picture we are in the Artist Alley/Dealer's Hall. I hesitate, because it is so crowded and one of the last things I want to do is block the traffic flow anymore than it sometimes gets. It can get the same way in the hallways. That's why I like to try to find more open areas (inside and out) to kind of meander about.

Thank you so much for talking about this! It's difficult for proffesionals and amatures to cosplay at all, and to be treated the way they do after all the long hours they put into it, it's just nice to hear someone bring awarness to it. FYI I'm not a pro at cosplay or anything. only cosplayed twice and at small local conventions, so i've never expirienced this, but I'm glad you're speaking on their behalf :) Respect man, Respect.

I was at a con last year as Zoe Hanji from SNK I had been walking that entire day and it was really sunny so when I met up with friends we sat down and I took that opportunity to take my wig off. We were probably sitting for 5 or so minutes when a couple people came up to me and my friend asking for a picture. We're both nice people so we obliged, put our wigs back on, posed then sat back down. Although it was nice to get the picture taken we did want to relax

This happened to me SO many times. In 2012, I was Rin Kagamine on a Sunday and I was waiting for my ride to pick me up and i was clearly tired sitting down with all my luggage with my head down, and like after every 2 minutes i kept getting asked for pictures. At Katsucon last week, I was Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul on Sunday and all day NO ONE wanted to take pictures until I was waiting in line for the girls bathroom close to the door and two people asked for pictures. I mean, SOMETIMES if i'm resting and I get asked for pics, I don't mind at all. But the other 40% I get irritated but not rude! I've been in a position where a cosplayer would be standing up not doing anything and I ask for a picture and they would roll their eyes or act annoyed. YOU WEREN'T RESTING or anything, let me take the gosh darn picture! lol xD

I remember a time when this guy was so into character that he scared me so bad that I had started to cry. He sort of acted out his fantasies with our characters.. (Need I have to say, same fandom, and the ship was quite popular, Spain x S.Italy from Hetalia is what I can remember, though I do recall being Romano) Made sexual advances on my character. Well, it all depends on what you qualify as 'too much'. Getting my earlobe nibbled was too much for me at least. Can't remember everything else clearly, was two years ago after all.

I mean, these things are dependidng on each person. For me its totally fine to ask for a picture if I'm sitting or eating. If I dont want to I will just say no or tell them to give me 5 mins to eat my food. This ,,if they are sitting they are resting,, is kinda meh. Many of us just spends hours sitting because its more comfortable but we are fine to stand up for a pics, and some of us resting standing as well when they stol so idk. Imo you can ask any time

As a cosplayer and a photographer. I have to make a correction here. If the con is held in a venue that is public. I.e. paid for by taxes, owned by the county, ect. Then it is a right to take a photo of anything and anyone in view form a public place so long as there is no reasonable expectation of privacy. many people are going to get mad in me saying this but sorry guys It is littlerly your right. Now if the con is held in say a hotel then you still have a right to take the photo so long as there are no signs forbidding photos and the property management has not asked you to not take photos. Now with all this being said just because its your right dosent mean you have to be a dick about it. Take your picture and move on dont shove your lens in there face

I totally agree to this. At the last Con I went to I were asked many times for a photo and in some of the times it was just really unappropriate and really weird too... I don't have a problem to been asked when I am sitting. Well depents ,if I am feeling sick or smth. like it I don't want to been asked but I actually think it's visible if someome is feeling not well. But if it's nothing very serious I don't really care. But the last Con I went to as 707 from Mystic Messenger someome asked me at the toillet for a picture while I was cleaning my hands! O-o she just focosed the camera on me and said "please turn around" , I was too confused to say no o-o . Actually I don't eat much on Conventios but I drink really much and I always have to find someone who is holding my drink (which is usually someone of my friends) and find a not very crowded place. I kinda found even out about someone who made a picture of me without asking and putting it on her story (It turned out to be a schoolfriend of my sister which didn't recognized anyone of us. Well actually I don't speak to her so she don't knows me and actually thought I was a guy.) and I just really don't like it to be photographed without knowing it. I mean I am not an artwork.I stil have my personal rights no matter how I do look like. And very often I get interruped in my conversations o-o which is not nice too even if I am happy and greatful if someone asks me for a photo because their like my cosplay. (Sorry bdw. for my crappy english xd )
