New research suggests retirees are ditching Australia to spend their well-earned money and time overseas.
Property Agent Eric Wong says the cost of living is “a lot higher in Australia” compared to other countries around the world.
Mr Wong said “for the same dollar” people are able to get more value for their money oversees.
“The property there is a lot cheaper.”
Mr Wong joined Sky News Australia to discuss the reason Australian retirees are relocating overseas.

We should be the Saudi Arabia of the Southern Hemisphere with no need for reliance on income taxes. It's because of The Rules. Australia has so many rules we have rules about the rules. You can't get up off the sofa without having to be aware of some or other government rule. Why cost of living in China is still much lower than the rest of the world? There is no property tax, land tax, gst. When people are tired of work or lost job in China, they can just lie flat for a few years as utilities and telecommunication/ public transport are also much cheaper. Typical Water bill per month for one family in China is 4 Euro and electricity per kWh is 7 cents Euro for peak hours and 4 cents Euro for off peak hours. One month internet wifi per family start from 1.50 Euro. One bus ride cost 25 cents Euro. Taxi ride start from 1.50 Euro.

My 2 cents: I obtained residencies in two countries ( Thailand and UAE ) and have spent the last year living abroad. If you are retired or can work online move overseas, it will be one of the best things you ever do. Avoid legacy brand countries and moved to Asia, Eastern Europe, or Middle East. ( find the one which suits you and your lifestyle best ) Although these places are different they are not as backyard as the media and politicians would have you believe. In the process you’ll enioy better value for money, higher standard of living and maybe eliminate the need to pay TAX.

Apart from BBQ whole pig hand turned over hot coals (which is by far the best pork in the world) and some seafood dishes, the cuisine is relative bleh compared to every where else in Asia. The PI has some of the most beautiful islands, beaches and rain forests....just keep away from the cities. PI cities are over crowded, hot, filthy, polluted and corrupt. The PI is rife with petty theft. There is a complete lack of intellectual stimulation (have you watched PI TV?), a dumbed down populace who all seem to survive on remittances from their mother/wife working overseas and they keep voting for the same 3 families who keep them dumb and poor. Filipinos lack drive and entrepreneurial spirit....but they do love a slogan. It's an ok place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there full time.

English proficiency in Indonesia is poor compared to other countries in the region, such as Singapore and Thailand, which were not mentioned by Mr Wong in interview. Thailand is a top country for Aussie’s to retire in.

Thailand doesn't want old white people retiring there but they do want Chinese and Indian tourists. It's possible that Thailand will put laws and higher taxes in place to discourage retirees from the West from living full time in Thailand.

I have a family income of over $250k per annum, I still feel the pinch of cost of living in Australia. I will most probably leave Australia and go to my home country India in a few years, and will take out all my investments from this exploitative country. India has a much bigger job market, nice salaries from US based Companies and less cost of living.

Ban feminism and ban the money printing ponzi. If woman prioritise family over career the increased population would be able to support all retired people. Retires money will hold it's value if governments werent alowed to print it and this would also reduce pressure on asset hoarding for the young generations

LOL......yeah, boomers are the reason Aussies under 35 years old don't own a house and have no money in the bank despite taking home $2000 per week. You probably tapped out this comment while sitting at an outdoor cafe in a trendy spot paying stupid money for brunch and a coffee while wearing the latest trendiest clothes after working out at the cool gym. Maybe you could ask boomers how they lived in the 60's and 70's....overseas holidays, eating out at restaurants, piling up credit, living beyond their means etc ..wasn't how they could afford to pay off a 3 bed weatherboard 40 klms from the CBD...they did it with saving, drinking instant coffee, cooking every meal, taking lunch to work, repairing instead of throwing away etc . Young people nowadays make it seem like it was easy in the 60's and 70's (despite the wars, credit crunches, inflation, petrol shortages, unemployment, economic downturns etc) but if you wanted to work hard, save hard then you could buy a house on the edge of suburbia and then worry about having enough money to pay that mortgage at the end of each month which is what they did....but let me guess, you are planning a trip to Europe and just got back from Bali but it's the boomers fault you can't afford to live in the trendy suburb where you're having brunch.
