As a European I am blown away how Kelowna has so many million dollar (and up) detached homes with spectacular views compared to its populace. I imagine it is not the service sector employees who are buying these family homes but the more wealthy to get a second home further away from Vancouver? Or does Kelowna offer many High-paying white collar jobs? Either way, the scenery and the city itself looks like a wonderful place and it reminds me of my hometown Kuopio, Finland! If I were a millionaire i'd also be interested in getting a holiday home in the hug of hills of Kelowna.

There is a tax on vacant homes if they are not lived in for over 6 months. In Kelowna we get a lot of IT workers and entrepreneurs that want a different lifestyle. For the mid end housing another main employer here is the hospital and government jobs being the only major center in the Okanagan. We also get a lot of retirees (more historical) what had grown our region. Since 2020 we have seen more remote workers come here with everything online. It’s a great place here and would highly recommend you come visit. Would be happy to have you. And let’s find you your holiday home 😉

How the heck do working class people afford to live in the Okanagan anymore???

It is definitely tough. Seems like everywhere is getting more and more expensive but it’s compounded in Kelowna. But I will say in my opinion if you can make it work it is worth it.

I hate living in Kelowna, I was born here in 1985, its changed so much and I can not afford to live here, but I can't leave because I don't have the money.

Oh no! That’s a tough spot to be in. It has drastically gotten more and more expensive. Housing especially.
