A country that will accept an application for a permanent visa only from someone already present, is inviting you to live as a tourist, with all the high costs that status entails, until it decides on the application. Very good for their hotels and restaurants, but not so good for you. After several months of high living, if your application is rejected or if you get tired of waiting, all you would have had is an extended vacation abroad. Far more reasonable would be to apply from your home country through a consulate to the immigration ministry. Do the waiting from where you now live, at home! For economy, there is no place like home!

Quick note about apartment rental costs. In addition to the rent, there will be "gastos comunes", or common expenses. Sometimes they will be like HOA fees in the US, covering maintenance and the like. Sometimes they will include utilities. They can add a significant amount to the cost of housing. Also, there can be commission payments to the rental agent. On the other hand, you can try to negotiate a lower rental amount.

@@julian-gen as our country has many free services for everybody such education and health care, no matter if people Uruguayan citizens or inmigrants as it is forbidden to make any difference between people as it is considered discrimination by law and our population is around 3.400.000, we need to put high taxes, to pay for the free service for everybody in those areas that we as a society feels that it is a priority. Our political system it is quite participative. Most people is concerned on how it is distributed the money that is collected through taxes. There are ways that citizen can abolish a law. As well as people can create a new law that politicians are not in favour some times, but if it is voted by the majority of people it will be a law for everybody no matter those politicians that work in the house of Parliments, it also rules them

I worked and lived in Uruguay for 7 years, I’m from Perth Western Australia. I lived in Rivera and later moved to Tacuarembo. Houses to rent to the same standard as Perth were similar to more expensive at the time. Grocery’s similar to Perth standard was much more expensive. Fuel, cars much more expensive. At the time I lived there the AUD was 1.10 to the USD, now it is .67c so would be far more expensive for Australians now. Electricity etc similar prices to Aus at the time. If you eat and live like the locals it is cheap but if we live and consume as we do in Aus it is considerably more expensive. Alcohol, restaurants are cheaper, cigarettes if you smoke but not much else, from memory.

The discount for tourist when you pay with a credit card is only during the tourism season,the restaurants prices vary depending which restaurant you go to,the ones in Mercado del puerto are some or the most expensive ones, you can also buy groceries in bulk stores.I am not trying to say Uruguay is not expensive,it is ,but it is good to know there are options.I am more surprise you were not able to find an Uber....we take Uber all the time. Come back in the summer where there is so much more to see and the weather is better then.

Thanks for the info. We were there in February (summer) so I’m not sure why getting an Uber was so problematic for us. Glad to hear it’s not a widespread issue.

@@ChrisAndEmilie Okay I guess you got some cloudy days that's too bad. Anyway that explains why was more difficult to find an Uber,if you came in February there is a higher demand in the summer,that being said there is an app that if there is no an Uber available they will send you a taxi.If you ever come back,get that one.

I would be wary about trying to live in any country that has a bureaucracy that is not clear and definite about its operations. The so-called "relaxed" or slower paced "way of life" is a warning that the bureaucracy, civil servants, are not really so civil in considering your situation. There are countries where they are efficient and dependable. Those are the only countries I would consider for application. I don't think that Uruguay fits that description from what I have read.

Assessing the cost of living in a country (Uruguay) in currency of another (US) is misleading. If the base country has a currency that is declining in foreign exchange value, then most goods and services in the visited country will be expensive. The cost of living, to be fair, should be assessed in terms of what someone with an average income in the visited country can buy. How large a house or apartment can he buy? What must he pay for medical care? What is the quality of the schools for his children? What a tourist must pay for a lunch or dinner in a restaurant in Montevideo in terms of his US dollars is hardly a meaningful measure. With a $35 trillion public debt, an American will increasingly find that his dollars are unwanted.

Those prices are insane. And you have to question why, a place would give you a discount when paying by credit card, when it COSTS them money to accept that instead of cash. This is a country best avoided from what I can see.

It's worth visiting, but yeah the prices are outrageous. Just as much as in the states, though properties are cheaper comparatively speaking. The politicians should do something about it (ha! what goverment does this, but one can only wish right?!) because they will lose a lot of people to Argentina or other countries with lower cost of living.
@Erwin932007 ай бұрын
@@leplane_ yes but urugayans have a much better quality of life, purchasing power than argentinians and stable economy. Why should they lower their prices for gringos who are only staying a few days there when they already have a diversified economy and don't need your tourist money. You think the world revolves around americans ? 😆 You are seriously asking their politicians to do the same as argentinia when the country is becoming a shithole and everybody is fleeing ? how dumb.
