"2 room apartment" = 1 room + living room Not to be confused with the British 2 bedroom flat which means 3 rooms (2 bed + living).

Well done Ella! Just a mention that in Romania all employees pay health insurance, so any medical related can be done in public hospitals free of charge. So the monthly deducted 10% health insurance includes all the medical costs in public hospitals, consultations, tests, scans, treatment, hospitalization included.

You forgot about heating and building maintenance. The price for gas is much higher in the winter months if it is used for heating. Most people, including me, don't spend 100 lei per month on drugs. Are you sick so often? Also, these prices are specific for Constanta, not for the whole country. Transportation, for example, is more expensive in all the other big cities.

Compared to UK probably everything is cheap, but when adjusting to the minimum income of 1500 or so lei the perspective changes a little. If you are legally employed, you should theoretically get free healthcare in public hospitals. However, even without coronavirus, state owned hospitals are full of corruption and incompetence. Quite often they will be lacking or not have at all important medication and supplies - clexane, modern resin based bandages for setting broken bones, adult diapers just from my direct observation. The Constanța general hospital should be avoided especially, the will leave you to die while in pain and do nothing, also direct observation.

Romania is a expensive country, for living cost, apartments are not so expensive this does not mean they are cheap either. Food is the most expensive part of living in Bucharest at least, unless you cook at home everyday and magically have time to visit the "cheap" markets obor for example, cause is not possible going to work and the market together every day... Unless you come from aboard with a 3k euros income, it wont be cheap, if you are earning 1000 euros and bellow and want to keep a good live style you probably wont have any savings for emergencies.

If you're curious about Farmacia Tei (I think I'd translate it like "the Tilia/lime tree Farmacy") - "Tei" is pronounced exactly like "Lei" but with the T; the "ci" sound is like "chee" from cheese. If you're curious about words or phrases you can write them on Google translate and click on the audio (it's important to add the special characters ă, â, î, ș, ț) - it has a 99% accuracy. I wish I had that farmacy in my city :( you're so lucky ♡

About 5,000-6000 lei 2 people can live comfortably in the province. In Bucharest you will need something more but remember that most Romanians have their own houses and do not pay rent. The mentality is different from the UK where people live in rent all their lives. Here when you reach an age you do your best to buy a house. That's why we get married to receive gifts for the advance to the apartment :)) And if you end up in hospital everything is free becouse they deduct from the salary your medical insurance , now with the pandemic it is more complicated but so it should be.

@@RaduRadonys If you're talking to me, regarding my comment, I must have phrased it wrong. I was trying to say that helping a new family is (in my opinion) not a bad thing. In more simple times and places (usually in neo-protestant working communities, like the Amish still are in the US), the "build a house together" was a normal event. Remember also the proverb (also English) "It takes a village to raise a child". Why people get married should be "FOR LOVE". That others try to help them have a good start at it hardly seems to me a primitive or bad thing.

Ella, you work for a Romanian company in Romania so your employer pays you the health insurance. All the services you get in a state hospital are FREE. If you go to the ER because you don't feel well, everything they do there (blood tests, X Ray, etc) is free of charge. Even for people without a health insurance, these medical services are free of charge. It is an emergency and they will not let you stay there, in pain. In your case, because you have health insurance paid by the Romanian Company you work for, it will be paid, no matter the costs (surgery, blood tests, etc). In case you have no emergency and you go for a regular test to a private hospital, you have to pay for the medical services. By the way, you should register in Constanța with a GP. The GP will see you free of charge anytime you don't feel well and he will send you to a doctor for the problem you have. The GP will give you a medical letter for this. The GP can write down a prescription for your medical issue. The price for these medicines is covered partially or 100% by your health insurance. Take care of you!

@@EllaSlingsby you are welcome! You should get a so called "health card" to prove that you are insured. Ask your employer about it. There are taxes deducted from your salary monthly for the health insurance. The company you work for pays these taxes to the government. So, in case you need medical services in an emergency, you get them for free. The dental services in case of emergency (night tooth pain) are also free. But if you want to fix a tooth, you have to go to a private clinic and you have to pay. It is not free. As you said, it is cheap compared to UK. And very good quality. Lots of foreigners come and have their teeth fixed in Romania (medical tourism). 😉

That's a lot. Most of Romanians don't spent 700 lei per food/one person. Clothes are more expensive in România but you don't buy them every day. The phone bills and internet are probably the cheapest in the entire world. I'm in Telekom and for 6€ I have infinite minutes, sms and data at higher speed over 4g than half the planet has over cable. The car cas is outrageous especially in the last weeks. 2 days ago was 6.2/l. If you have insurance and you go to the hospital the medical bills are not so expansive. You may have to pay for some procedures and for some medicines but it's quite cheap. The restaurants and bars became quite expansive over the pandemic.

In Bucharest and Cluj, the prices are considerably higher. Even on the outskirts of the city, a rent for a 2 rooms appartment would be at least 350€. And it may take you at least 1 hour to reach a more central area, so add the extra gas. The prices for food at the restaurants are higher too( 40 lei for some basic pasta). No to mention the other services, such as make up, hairdresser’s etc, where the prices are elevated at least by 10% compared to other cities.

If you work in Romania you pay taxes for public health system so it's free. If you go to a private clinic a blood test will not be over 20 pounds but around 5 pounds. The advantage of addressing private for an MRI or CT Scan is that it's quicker (1-2 weeks) and if you're referred by your gp it could be the same or an extra 1-3 weeks. But if referred you don't pay anymore or you pay about a third of the cost. The pharmacy can be ruled out because it's only if you need it. Prices for medicines or vitamins are similar to UK or cheeper.

I really like your videos and your enthusiasm, thank you for promoting our country but you see you compare the prices in lei with pounds and is not accurate cause here in UK you get a minimum of 1200 pounds let's say for a month and when you tell the prices from Romania it sounds cheap and it is for a foreigner but think as a Romanian when you get 1500 lei(aprox300£)a month how is it to survive there and I'm not saying if you have a family too.I will continue watching your videos cause I really like them but I'm sorry it is not entirely true what you say about living in Romania ,that's why so many of us prefer to work in another country and send money home, 100£ here is a lot of money but actually is 1or 2 days of work but in Romania is 1/3of monthly income .I'm sorry to say it but after 40 years of living in my country I decided to come in UK and I don't have any regrets,it's 1000 times better even if what I say now will trigger a lot of complaints from patriots in my country but sadly this is the truth

I have to congratulate you on making a very detailed list, you said the prices and what you think about them, and it's fine. I just want to share something I thought of Denmark before I stayed there for 5 month. The average salaray in Constanta is aboiut 400 euro/month(beacause as you know by know, we don't talk in terms of salray per hour like other countries), , the lowest salary in dk 1300-1500/month, the acomodation no doubt about is more expensive, but I drink a lot of beer and I spend a lot of money on ciggars, cheapest beer I can buy here in Romania is on the big bottle that costs about 1,5 euro, like Bucegi or Ciucas, the 2,5l bottle or 2,25 in case of ciucas. We don't get money back for plastic bottles. Cheapest beer I can buy in dk, is the small glass bottle of local beer of 0,33 (like dansk beer), witch you get 1 korona back for bottle, so the actual price of the beer is 1,5kr witch is 0,20euro. 0,20 x 7 = 1,4euro, since 7 beers of 0,33 is about the same of big bottle of 2,5liter, and to my surprise the price si about the same, not to mention the quality of the beer is better in dk then the one on big bottle we have here, but pricewise is the same, even tho the salary are 4-5times lower here, same for ciggars, ciggars are 20%more xpensive in dk, but when you adjust for the money you earn /month, is obviosly cheaper to smoke there aswell. My list is not as detalied as yours, I don't remember the prices of everything there, but I recalled buying a full chicken was about the same price as here, only that there people don't buy full chicken, beacause they can't coock, they don't even know how to cut it, they just buy semiprepared meals, and that by in itself is more expensive, witch we do not do here in general, pretty much every house knows how to make food from scrath not from premade meals that you just microwave them or heat them, but I don't recall buying food beeing expensive, since I was making food from 0. So overall, they advertise dk as beeing expensive country, maybe it is(in some areas, like if you want to buy a car), but the way I figgured, if I can drink at the same price, smoke at about the same price, while having a 5x more pay, eat at the same price, i just couldn't figgure out how it was more expensive, except for acomodation, but the money thtat you get in hand after you pay for acomodation and utility have way more power then the money you are left on hand here after youy pay taxes utility. You are a smart girl, you have to understand there is a reason why 5 milion romanians are working abroad, lots of them in uk aswell, if it was so cheap and easy here, they wouldn't have left, but it's not, it's just an ilusion, at least this is what I think when I compared an expensive country as dk to a cheap one like ro, and I was stunned. There is another cool part, when you have kids.. and you have to pay ilegal taxes in school, but that's antoher thing.

You forgot about random stuff like books, home decor etc.. which add up at least 100 lei per month I would say and maybe 100 lei to travel or for entertaining or for a hobby.. and you also need to put money aside which should be at least 100 lei.. so + 300 But I like the idea and your math was pretty accurate 😌 so thank you for the video 💕

Hi Ella, I live in UK for over 5 years now and I really think that the cost for utilities is actually the same as it is in Romania. I am not sure what is the temperature in Constanta on the winter period, but I used to pay in Iasi (north of Romania) almost £150 for the gas bill monthly. Indeed, on the normal time of the year I used to pay just £5-£7. One more think - you didn’t said anything about “Asociatie” where you pay the use of water and the common maintenance of the building(cleaning and other stuff) and the “Salubris” or the company which is responsible for the garbage disposal. On a separate subject - do you think to visit the rest of Romania? Kind regards from Evesham 🤗🤗

@@EllaSlingsby the other costs are probably included in the rent you pay. You pay only the utility bills (gas, electricity, water). There is also a tax similar to the English Council Tax. This is paid by the landlord to the municipality.

@ Lăcrămioara She may live in a flat in a house, not a block of flats - and then she doesn't have the bills for "Asociație". I guess then there would be a sanitation service bill (picking up the garbage), but that may be for the whole property so payed by the owner, and his expense.

This is accurate but the cheap/ expensive depends on the income. For a foreigner it might be cheap but for Romanians is expensive cus here the minimum wage is approx 1500 lei (300 euro/260GBP) while as you saw the cost of living/month is 2000lei(400 euro/350GBP). When I say the minimum wage I reffer to the money you actually have in hand after a month of work not what they put on paper cus that is bs. I lived in Timisoara for 3 years and I had to live with 250euros/month. But it was terrible. I would only have one pair of jeans and I would wear them until I had to throw them away cus they were all ripped. If I had to buy shampoo I had to cut the money I would spend on food. I shared an office(a room+ little hallway with the smallest kitchen and the smallest bathroom) with a friend and 150euros was rent and electricity(my friend had to pay the same amount). And keep in mind I was a lucky student cus the majority lived in dorms with rats, mice and cockroaches (in their beds sometimes) and survive with 12 euros/week(aka my brother). I was lucky my parents found a job in France when I started uni. But on the other hand on Christmas, New Year and Easter I would be home alone cus they were far away. Unfortunately, that is the reality of Romanians, you have to choose between being with the family and barely surviving or have enough money to live and buy a piece of clothing when you need it but be alone, away from your loved ones. I lived in Spain and France and it doesn't compare. There, the food is sometimes cheaper, the clothes are also cheaper and the quality is way better there than what is made for Romania.

Or, you know, go to college, get a degree, and work for 1000-2000 euros per month. I did that, and it was not hard. But you have to put some effort for that, and that is more than many young people are willing to do.

@@RaduRadonys yeah but not everyone has the brain to study IT or other well paid domains. I graduated language and literature and I can't find a job that pays 1000-2000 €(maybe on paper but I'm not sure tho) In fact I can't find any job in my domain because all jobs require years of experience but none takes you for internship (even unpaid intership). And I am not the only one in this situation. I know a lot of other people that graduated from college and left to go work in agriculture because you can't find a job here in your domain. I did the same thing I went to work in France in agriculture because I couldn't find anything here. And let's not talk about the respect you get if you work in western countries comaperd to how I was treated here when I had to do "practica" at a library(unpaid "practica) This was another reason why I left Romania after I was done with uni. When I chose my high school I chose the best one I could find in my area and I entered but after a year I gave up because I was close to repeat the year. I had no idea what IT was and the teacher didn't bother to teach me. In fact he discouraged me and said to move to another class cus I stain the image of the class I was in. I didn't have computer to search tutorials about C++ or math tutorials or whatever. So yeah. I don't wanna complain. I was lucky I could work in France. I just left that comment because in France a lot of my coworkers were amazed of how cheap Romania is. But they forget that our salary is not even half theirs.

@@Ge0rGi. You are right, it is, but not by much. Rent is definitely higher, especially long term and outside summer. Things like heating, internet & tv, gasoline / diesel, those are the same. Clothes don't cost wildly different amounts either, and you have a far bigger selection to choose from. Food is a quite a bit more, restaurants are about the same, i think public transport is slightly more expensive, but then again the city is much bigger, so it will also be more useful. Didn't notice any difference in the cost of medicine and healthcare, but I did notice a big difference in quality - Bucharest has way better hospitals than Constanta.
