Great video. I really like that you mentioned that you have 2 kids. I also have 2 kids and a wife and it’s hard to find info about ppl moving to the bay in the same family situation. Would love to hear more about raising a family in the bay

I accepted an offer in Bay area because of the money. It's true that they pay your really well in Cali, especially if you are an engineer. But again, I'm not sure what my future looks like. I used to think Scilicon Valley would be an ideal place to live, it has the best engineers in the world who I really enjoyed working with, but at the same time it has a lot of problems in the surrounding areas. The drug, the gun, the violence, you know it's one thing to watch the news but to see them corner boys packing heat with your own eyes, it scared the shit outta me. And to think kids have to grow up in this environment? I don't know man, it breaks my heart. But maybe this is just me, it's the first time I came to US so maybe I'll get used to it

Cong on your new offer. You are absolutely right. and it also concerns me for the issue you pointed out. We are trying to stay in a safe district, but the cost of living is high. I don't know if I made the right decision to come to bay area but we just need to experience ourselves to make a call.

Hi Gaosheng - this would have been more useful if you did an apples to apples comparison with your old house to what you can get in the Bay Area. Also you could go into the state taxes/ gas ( if you need to drive to work). I think 30k is on the light side of things to move there with the same standard of living. As a comparison I am doing a similar calculation from going from philly to nyc area. Based on housing and taxes I found a 50k increase. I also think Bay Area is more expensive than Jersey.

Wait just to clarify, I’m moving there soon for work. My husband is also in the military so I won’t go out of pocket as much for housing. So you’re saying you need to make at least 30,000.00 a year in order to be comfortable in The Bay Area?

Cong to your new work! Compared with where I lived before, I calculated I need to make +$30k more to break even due to the higher cost of living at Bay Area. To be comfortable, it depends which area you are living in and how many kids you have. Because it will dramatic impact your total expense here.

For a single, the cost can be much lower. Depends on which area you want to live, the cost of housing still gonna be a the major cost I think.

My budget when I was single was $2500 rent + utilities for a small studio, $325 parking, $600 food, $100 car insurance? $70 phone, so about $3600/ mo total. So about $60k/ year befor taxes just to live, but have no life + savings….. I could get the same thing in a small Midwestern city for around half that with a better quality of life.

​@Confused Goku maybe a little, but i find the Bay area is much more aligned with the political left, and so people are less racist than other parts of the country.... some comapnies are even of the mindset that in order to swing the pendulum in the other direction of racism that they would prefer to hire a non- white person... kind of like affirmative action..... So i don't find any issues here. whereas when i lived in other parts of the country like Iowa, people were more outspoken about being racist. but also on the other side of the coin in find that generally i find that there are so many crazy people on the streets that people are not as willing to talk to or help out a stranger. people just keep their head down and keep moving.

@@georgealvitesacker8113 It’s before tax. For a family of 4, you need budget ~$4000/mo for house. If you need send kids to private school or pre-school, you need about $1500~2000/mo per person. Then adding up your food, dining out, utility bills and transportation. You can add it up.

Here's a better rule : If you are warehousing your kids to Day Care, your life is a mess. Move. Never dump your children to strangers all day.
