Some of these comparisons are not apples to apples. Example is size of houses. I run my central air 24/7 in Ky in the summer months and my entire gas and electric bill is a little over $100. Mind you this is central air that is cooling the entire house! I think I’m trying to say that the quality between both countries is not the same. Water is cheaper there but I would not drink it. It’s polluted. Our phone service and utilities in the states is reliable, we seldom have brown outs. Ultimately I’m saying you get what you pay for.

They did not say cost of food, trips, fuel and car or motorcycle payments, insurance, and that only rent not buying, it has taxes every year plus a/c if run most of time 1 window unit =4000 a month. Prepare black out with extra back up energy because can be off 4 hours to 4 days a time , etc.

Example i paid to have my house built with upstairs patios and it a big concrete tiled house with farm land for fruit orchard i have i gave $1.3 million for it in cash and thats usa $ not peso in iloilo philippines, house has 15 bedrooms and 5 full bathrooms and 2 kichens and 2 living rooms and a study office and a large outside concrete storage building and a concrete security fence with 2 large meadle gates.

61k a month is living quite well. I lived in Cebu for about 10 years on a budget of 40K a month and had a good life there with money left in the bank each month. I didn't have a car, but did have a motorcycle and my girlfriends family never asked us to help them out, so saved a bit there. I paid 8500 peso for a 2 bedroomed apparment in a middle class area of the city. If you're going to retire there look into the retirement visa as it works out cheaper than renewing a tourist visa as I did for all those years!

@@peterhuang1431 It depends on rank. Look at the pay charts for E-6 AND ABOVE AT 20 YEARS. E-6 is the lowest rank to retire. Retirees receive 50% of pay monthly. Many retirees also receive some amount of VA Disability payment, between $250 to $3000+ depending on disability rating.

Right on target IMHO. I've been living here for 13 years and when people ask I tell them at the current P50/$1, $1,000 minimum plus $200 for each additional person. So $1,200 minimum for a couple and you can adjust it from there. We're a family of 3, 2 adults and a tween in private school, living just outside of Cebu City and our average monthly cost is around P70K. But after allowances for the 3 of us, P6,000 X 2 and P600, to spend as you please, it's about P83K. Quite a few Americans here seem to flip out when I tell them that we spend P80K to P85K a month. That's too much for the Philippines! But OMG!! That's cheap!!!

@Kam Y I agree P90K is indeed cheap and a more practical number for a foreigner with kids would probably be P100K. We rented this house in late 2007 and the landlord has never raised the rent.

This is for an area outside of Manila where the rent will be lower than other places. In Cebu, even Province, rent will be about 150-200% more but other expenses will be about the same. Electric power in Cebu is a bit less than Manila.

For family of 4 I pay 18K in rent/month for 120 Sqm house, Electric bill varies from 8-11k/month, Water 1.5k, Internet Fiber 50Mbps 1.6k, Cable TV 600, Groceries is 10k/week 45k/month, Car Insurance w diesel reg and maint 6k. Medical Insurance 12k, Kids School including fares varies from 8-12, Motorbike 1k/month, and always something needed replacing, in Dec 2020 it was new TV, now in Jan AC in kids room died, About $2000-2500 USD is my monthly budget, and on that travel expenses, and some expenses for updating car/bike/computer/phone/bicycles and buying clothes and shoes.

I’m from Canada,been to the Philippines 7 times over the last 8 years...it can’t be beat!! You can live in the province’s in Mindanao for under a grand a month and easily survive,nothing beats white sandy beaches ,it really is paradise and 95% speck descent English. I like the explanation of your monthly expenses and it is a little bit high for me if I decided to live there. I would minus some of the expenses like car, motor cycle and pets etc. I can live in a frugal system and I can happily survive with my retirement pension. I definitely decrease my grocery and eating out expense because I never like " red " meat in the first place. The only thing noone mentions is the e xtreme heat (if nott using air con), and also that after many months, you may be longing to be back in america...... so best thing is too do 6 months in phil when its winter in america.... n 6 months in america in su mmer. Ok, so currently I am single, and plan on moving there as soon as travel restrictions are over. So judging by your main expenses, which of course are mandatory, and estimated food costs for myself, and since I have no animals, or girlfriend/wife. I came up with around 28,500P, or $608 USD. I am pretty sure that of course will change if I do add a girlfriend/wife, family, purchasing and care of a vehicle, dogs, cats, iguana's etc. Then that bill I'm sure will go up, however I did use your food costs as a basic idea. I can take some of that off because I do plan on doing a LOT of fishing and of course the occasional Ribeye but a really nice Ribeye here in the US will set you back $20 USD, at $7.00P that's a steal, so I'm not worried about that. I'm sure my food costs won't be near as high, so I can adjust where I need too but $600 is great for those who don't have a 2nd, or 3rd income, and still reasonable for those who are not getting a nice pension from SSI, SSD, or whatever. $800 to $1,200/mth seems to be a standard amount so even if your not rich, you can still afford to live there especially if you budget the way you are. If, you do happen to marry a Filipina and she does work, that would be even better of course. Any help is better than no help. Thank you so much for breaking it down like this, it makes it easier for planning.

Hi guys. Sorry to hear about your puppy. I found that feeding the doggy’s boiled chicken feet with a little salt and a small piece a garlic improves their problem with the problems. My golden retriever was having major issues with her hip displacia. After feeding her 2 times a week chicken feet she got better after 3 weeks. Now I only feed her 1 a month for maintenance. She is 16 years old Try it you won’t regret it. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing, planning on retirement before I hit the big 50. Or to be more precise, I will retire when I have saved up enough cash so that it will last until the pension kicks in(aiming for 300k $). The more clips I watch on the subject, 1k $ a month seems OK but abit more is way better. So 1500$ seems like a sweetspot, with room to travel and margin if shit goes south.

Thanks for the info, but really, I have been thinking about retiring there because I was born there. Main thing is to save money. The most important thing I am worried about is security. I have heard about riding in tandem , akyat bahay, etc. Another thing are lazy relatives who never run out of sad stories just to extract money out of us, balikbayans. So, instead of saving, you will end up supporting the whole clan! And they do come every month to shack up with you, eat you out of your house and home! I have been there, and done that! Not that I do not want to help, but in my case, I have a soft heart, and I'm afraid I would outlive my savings and retirement money there. How do you say no and still not to hurt their feelings? Please advise.

get away as far from your family then. build a house in a different region/island (where they would need to ride a plane) as for the security, (if you're planning to live in manila) those riding in tandem are only usually drug related so you should be fine. also, you can now again wear jewelry in the streets (again in manila), you can now again wear backpacks in the back =) petty crimes plummeted since the war on drugs started. vloggers can now film on the street without getting their camera stolen. im not saying it's crime free, but, it's a world's different from the previous admin. akyat bahay really depends on the location. i live in davao and that rarely ever happens. maybe once a year? and the culprit usually gets caught..

Just vacationing😜 Live in a condo with gated security so no unexpected guests ever! I just really think that it is not fair to my american husband who worked very hard all his life be in a situation where some relatives will just bleed him of his hard earned money. I did support my family back home for many years with my own money while I was working, but enough is enough. It comes to a point that you are just being taken advantaged of , and that is not fair. Not to mention the stress that they bring to you with all their sad stories! And then, you see their FB accounts with their pictures in bars and restaurants, having a good time with their friends using your hard earned money! I even had a situation with a distant relative which I accepted on FB, never met them, or anything and then, they are asking me for money to pay for a passport application and overseas job application fee! Then they have the audacity to tell you that "this is the first time ever " that they are asking you for help! I never even met them in person! I just think that expats with a Pilipina wife should be very careful with their money. The wives often have a big heart and will always want to help out their relatives.

I’m a Filipina and I agree that if you want to live in the Philippines stay away from relatives , don’t tell them about your financial status and learn how to say no . If you start loaning one , the next week you have ten in line to borrow money from you. They can manipulate you by telling you lots of sad stories. Better not to start. That's probably one of the more realistic (for me anyhow) budget reviews I've seen. Being Canadian it would work out to a bit more than $1,600.00 a month in our currency. A lot of the expenses you have we won't, but being as I'll want more western type food that will bump our costs up a lot.

For me it depends on the women I am with, because I did try to live in the P.I. on and off from 1989 until 2001 and the women and their family's made it very hard for us to live in piece! I even open up real stores for them and it still wasn't enough for them. So I went back to the US and stayed their.

Yeah, it really makes a difference how the family sees you. Some of my friend's in-laws treat them as just another member of the family while some others see them as a walking ATM. My own in-laws are generally pretty good but on occasion get a bit greedy. It's my wife's job to shut them down when that happens. She tells them if they don't like how we help we can always stop!

Pamela Mallory it’s not because we’re men. It’s because we are assumed to be much wealthier than them. We usually are. If the American was female the same would apply. That just rarely happens. It’s almost always a male American and a Filipina. In Philippine culture it’s generally a case of “what belongs to one belongs to the family” so they feel entitled to ask/demand their “share”. Not everyone is this way but quite a few are. I don’t mind helping since I consider them my family....just don’t get carried away. It seems weird to Americans because we come from a different, and often more selfish, culture with different ideas of personal vice group property.

If you go to the vet in Canada look at $1000.00 bill for your cat or dog, especially if they are sick and need meds. Yor rent is really cheap. We live in a townhouse in Mississauga, ON Canada. Our rent is $1365.00 per month plus all utilities. Our townhouse is two rooms. The living room and kitchen are one room and a bedroom with a bathroom and of course, we do have a garage. When we had two cars we paid $50.00 a month for parking. Hydro is very expensive here, cell phones and the internet. We pay $260.00 a month for cable tv, landline, and internet. For two of us, groceries run around $600.00 a month more or a little less. Depending on where we go out to eat will never be under $30.00 and that is Swiss Chalet takeout for 2 chicken dinners nothing fancy. Great Video. I met my wife in Batangas back in 07', got married in 09' and built a 70 sqm. 2BR house in Negros Oriental in her home town that same year. We now have 3 children and live in Texas. I am about 10 years from retirement and our youngest is 7 years old so our life is in Texas for now. This is a very informative budget that will give other people an idea. The only thing I would mention is all the public transportation that is available. You can really get away with not having a car. A person can get by with Jeepney and Tricycle rides. Great video thanks for sharing some of the real world budgetary requirements for PI. Back in 08' I spent 4 days at the big hospital in Alabang in private room had a procedure done by a neurologist on L-4 vertebrae where they injected dye and pain meds into sciatic nerve canal, the dye was for imaging. I went to hospital by ambulance unable to walk, walked out 4 days later. I remember laying in the hospital bed worried at what the bill was gonna look like. I saw cardiologist, anesthesia, orthopedic, finally neurologist. Then when I was checking out, and got the bill I almost laughed. Total bill was like 58,000 pesos. All that would have been at least 9K to 15K USD in America probably more. My middle son was born in Philippines via c-section, total bill 32,000 pesos. Just FYI for others reading comments.

Let me estimate our living expenses here. Mortgage 2,200, groceries 500, eating out 150 ( I mostly cook), gas 250 (2 cars my husband work is 45 mins), water and sewage 180, electric 150, shopping 200 (depends mostly my kids clothes and shoes), yard work 0 ( we have a big yard and I do it by myself because it can cost 1,000 to remove the leave 2x), snow plowing 105, sending money to PI 400 monthly, bought a deck paint, paint brush , tools- sanding 200 and 110 phone bills. Total is $4,435 and I can tell / estimate maybe when it's summer $4,000 due to we drive a lot and travel plus the food eating out for 4 person. We live in NE and cost of living here is higher than in the South. Also, we pay property tax 11k each year.

Enjoy living in Philippines while both of you are young & healthy. Your total monthly expenses is less than half of the monthly rent of the apartment in BayArea in California ( moved now Las Vegas) probably now 2 bedrooms is $3000/month not to mention other bills such as utilities, groceries, internet & cable, gas & vehicles insurance etc. This is a good video, both my husband & I early retired from county gov’t. I’m considering living there in Philippines 9 to 10 months & travel here in the US during filing taxes.
