Cost of Living on Koh Phangan
ค่าครองชีพในเกาะพะงัน
A question I get asked a lot is, “How much does it cost to live there?” In this video, I’ll give you my monthly budget for living on the beach on Koh Phangan, my favorite island in Thailand. I’ll also try to give you a quick look at what your lifestyle will be like. Keep in mind, this budget is based on living there for a single month. I was paying rent based on nightly rates during the high season rather than a lease. I wasn’t really trying to watch my eating budget either. I would eat some cheap meals but I also dined at some of the nicest restaurants on the island. LivingOverseas.TV will be releasing a full-length video about the best islands to live on in Thailand so please subscribe.

I absolutely love this island! Thanks for breaking down the budget. I would love to know what the cheapest you think you could live there comfortably for would be? Would 1000 a month be doable??
@LivingOverseasTV
@LivingOverseasTV 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your level of comfort and if you can do without western food. Alcohol can add up too. I have many friends living well below $1,000 USD per month. You can get a one-room bungalow for as little as $150 per month and a decent Thai meal can be purchased for $3 if you bring your own drink. There's plenty of free things to do on the island so it can be fairly cheap. I hope that helps.

There are definitely two sides to the island. The southern, party side and the northern, conscious community. Other parts of the island are void of both of the previously mentioned groups. Don't let the "full/black moon" beach parties keep you from visiting. It just draws the young partiers to one spot on the island and away from the other beaches.

Thank you for this video. I am giving this some serious thought now. Just wondering a few things that maybe you can help me with? is it possible to have internet in your bungalow? and how would i go about arranging a reservation there? and is there a long sandy beach on the island? something long enough to run on? also i have heard the sun is something to be avoided for long periods of time. Is that true?
@LivingOverseasTV
@LivingOverseasTV 5 жыл бұрын
Great questions Joe. Internet is available almost everywhere and included with the price at many bungalows. You can make reservations on agoda.com, bookings.com, and airbnb.com. During high season reservations are highly recommended. During low season, you can often get a good deal just stopping by in person. Haad Yao Beach would be my choice for running but there are other nice running beaches too. Here is a link to my video about Haad Yao: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4KYm6OVjrSEa5Y Most people that live here avoid the beach during the hottest part of the day unless they are trying to get a tan. I paddleboard 3 or 4 times a week and hike but usually before 10am or after 4pm when it starts cooling off. It’s an amazing island and certainly worth a visit.

@LivingOverseasTV

Our island is a yoga mecca. There are many schools but also many yoga teachers. I think it is very unlikely that you can get yoga teaching job without being here. There is probably a little more demand for meditation leaders. Your best opportunity is to establish yourself here in the community and when teachers leave for visa runs or low-season trips, start subbing while they are away. Teachers often extend their trips or don't return and if you are subbing for them at the time, you may retain the job. I know teachers that have gotten in this way. This is the same for Bali and Costa Rica. Namaste.

boatswainsm8, They are grateful for us being there because it drives up the economy. Businesses are hurting now due to COVID and the Thai business owners can't wait for the tourist to come back. I'm sure there are some people that don't care for the tourists but the only complaints I ever hear are when foreigners don't observe cultural boundaries such as wearing a bikini into a restaurant in town or improper behavior at temples. Yes, we drive prices up at prime tourist spots but there are usually affordable options around too.

@cloudzinmyizeTip from a traveller: hello, There are beautiful small resorts around the island and most of them you will find on any booking engine. I usually only book only 2-3 days as once on the island you will find & choose what suites you. For instance there are beach, mountain and forest resorts with very price friendly alternatives if you choose a thai style bungalow. I got a hill side bungalow 300 meters from the beach for 600-800 bath with air con some years ago. You might start with looking in to the alternatives that are close to the yoga retreat ( Ask them for tips!). Be aware of roads that demand driving skills. ( very steep & high rising on some distances!).
