Thank you for this very realistic insights. It's indeed better to arrive with enough money, or it will be a tough start. From my experience around 1500 Euro will buy a ticket from Europe to New Zealnad. Just as you say, it should be booked a few months before going.

Anna is pretty much right if you're planning to live in NZ permanently.. But if you're travelling as working holiday there are lots of places you can camp, share or some employers may have accommodation which the employer will take rent out of your weekly pay but m,ake sure you do your homework as some employers mostly in the agriculture industry (Kiwifruit orchards in particular) will try to extort much higher rent where there may be other rentals close by in town especially as Anna explained as alot of rural areas in NZ have quite cheap rentals if you share with other travellers/backpackers. Also share a vehicle is a lot better. Also you can buy really decent station wagons (to slep in necessary). Vans are always a lot more valuable and the prices can vary depending on your budget.

I forgot to mention that most farmers are more than willing to accommodate or employ people during the seasonal rush for workers and they cook an awesome meal to. So shop around or better still ask a local person. They are the best source of information so don't be shy just ask with a smile and you will be more than likely taken in.

Well done Anna. (One fact is there are actually plenty of houses but many of the owners choose not to rent them out, instead leave them vacant, especially in beach towns like Waihi, so many houses are sitting idle until the owners pop in for the odd long weekend holiday). Yes sadly rents are just so expensive now making living harder for families. Many people buy furnishings from “op shops” which have a variety of second hand furniture from good to great and from cheap to nearly new, well worth a look, of course look for the big sales when getting anything new.

One small point. The bond you pay to the landlord is required to go to Tenancy Services. If a landlord keeps the bond in their account they are breaking the law! When you move out the landlord and you fill out a form which is sent to Tenancy Services and they refund the bond to you. That's presuming you and the landlord are not in dispute over how much you should get back.

Heh in Dunedin it's a student city. Rent is about $150 per room. More if you don't want to share. Used to be cheaper especially with the basics (rent, electricity) but goods were more expensive double or triple comparatively for TVs, computers etc. Christchurch was a rare trip but rent was 50iirc a room mid 90's.
