Things like this used to happen commonly, back in the day when media scrutiny wasn't so big. But still this one has a particularly outrageous shade to it. This guy was literally among the best players in the world, and that too in both forms of cricket, it's usually said he was the best limited overs cricket player in the world, but how many players could boast of a 45+ batting average in 50+ tests, back in the day. The man scored a double century in India, when Australian players were known to struggle in Asian conditions.

Ironic thing is the Sri Lankan team used Deano as inspiration and employed his attacking batting style which won them the 96 WC. Australian selectors have always been biased and corrupt. Look at Tim Zoehrer in the 80s. He was clearly the best keeper in Australian cricket yet got overlooked and they went with an absolute arsehole and cheat.

Thanks for the upload. It is baffling that someone of Jones' talent was restricted to 52 tests, considering that underperformers like Shane Watson played 59. Regarding the Narc comment, given this clip was around February 1995, would it be safe to say that Deano was referring to the Shane Warne/Mark Waugh bookmaker controversy, which was leaked to the ACB shortly after the 1994/95 Ashes, was known by the ACB, ICC and several other key players in the Australian team, but was still kept hidden from the public until it was leaked by Malcolm Conn in late 1998?

@@jamespettitt2162 Although he knew how to smash a cricket ball on his day and was very quick (I remember him clocking 146km/h during the 2005 Australia vs World XI ODI series), my lasting impression of Watson's time in the Aussie side is that he came across as lazy and unmotivated. Underachieved with the talent he had. Reminded me of athletes such as Timana Tahu: someone who was more interested in preserving himself on the field rather than giving his all (largely due to numerous injuries sustained over the career). Also, I lost count of the number of wasted DRS reviews for LBWs Watto squandered. He played a lot more test matches than he should have, as he was one of the "golden childs" of Ricky Ponting and the national selectors. The selectors had this constant fixation on having an all-rounder in the team after the 2005 Ashes series loss, not to mention the depth and level of talent in state cricket was below par by the time Watto got back into the test team as opener during the 2009 Ashes. James Sutherland et al. at Cricket Australia is largely to blame for that, neglecting the development of cricket at grass-roots level, talent at the Institute of Sport, and the importance of Sheffield Shield performances in favour of putting all their eggs in the Big Bash, which is Cricket Australia's cash cow. Because of the neglect, it's going to take MANY years to get back to the standard it was during 1994-2004 (Mark Taylor/Steve Waugh captaincy years)

Where Deano fucked up was being Australia's best ODI batsman and being Victorian. The selectors from the other states got jealous and it ate them up inside seeing Dean at centre stage for Australia they had to find a way to get him out of the team so that some player from NSW or QLD could get a go. Corruption still happening now. Look at Scott Boland, most economical Australian bowler over the last 14 months yet can't get a game in the Aust ODI team. That proves there's Corruption going on.

Why couldn't Dean Jones or any other player have an opinion? If he was in great form you don't drop him. So if I am doing a great job at my workplace but I make a comment that every workplace has a narc/drug dealer why should I be punished or lose my job? I'm entitled to my views as was Deano. The Australian Cricket Board should have been more concerned about the sledging and cheating that was going on with the Aust team than worrying about players personal opinions.
@Tom.Livanos
@Tom.Livanos 2 жыл бұрын
@@garynewton1263 Yeah but *every* team has a narc (again, emphasis added)? He had/has an opinion. Yeah sure. He says it on national television. Again, his right and his choice. Agreed. Is that it is it? No-one else can ever do anything or say anything in response? How the **** does that one work? Freedom of expression and action is exclusive to Dean Jones? Again, I found his batting highly entertaining when I watched cricket. I enjoyed it. I do, however, acknowledge that cricket is a team sport. More deeply than that: it is a human activity. One in which Dean Jones made a career from. He betrayed his cynicism here. Again, he may have an opinion and he may even express it on national television. So the answer to your first question is: yes, he could have an opinion, and freedom to express it. Yes. Yes that is available to him --- and to everyone. Man, I do not like to speak ill of the dead. As such, what I am expressing here is more of a philosophical point. One for your good self and all of us living: cynicism is a dud. Yes, one may have awful life experiences; no, I am not wanting to "take that away". Not from anyone. Cynicism is a dud because... well... as the expression goes: darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light may do that. Again, Dean Jones could have presented evidence for what he knew. Not only does he have the right to an opinion but indeed he may have a responsibility to express it. So, express it! Do not be leaving a dark cloud... let alone to then be expecting everyone to... well... what?? What did he expect others to do?? If one is to go down the road of whistle-blower then... well... fricking go down it! More power to him! Whistle-blowers, despite their awful treatment, are heroes of humanity. You bring up sledging and cheating. That, I agree, is a legitimate issue. You notice? It is beyond a player's actual form or performance on the field. It takes the whole thing... the game of cricket... to an even darker place. What am I/anyone supposed to say? Okay, to you: present the cheating and sledging which took place and/or taking place. I agree that it is a legitimate issue. You and I both know that we do not know one another; merely two commenters on a KZbin video. See what is going on here though? Darkness... followed by more darkness. *This* is why cynicism is a dud. Not because it may be inaccurate. Perhaps it is the most accurate thing on all of KZbin... it is a dud because it only brings the darkness forward, the nastiness, however one wants to say it. Bring forth the evidence - shine a light on whatever is going wrong. Make the wrongdoers feel the discomfort which goes along with doing something bad and then having it made public. That is the healthy way forward in these ugly situations. The cynicism... ahem... 'approach'... well... no good ever comes of it. Just makes an ugly situation uglier. I do not wish to end this comment in any other way: rest in peace Dean Jones.

You can blame Ross Emerson (the umpire who infamously no-balled Muralitharan) for Deano missing out on the '96 World Cup squad. With a couple of spots still up for grabs in the squad just before the World Cup, Australia A played the West Indies at the SCG and just as Deano was looking good and hit his old rival Curtly Ambrose for a few boundaries, he copped a shocking LBW decision from Emerson that pretty much sealed his fate in what turned out to be his final chance of getting back into the Aussie side. We could've done with Deano's experience in the World Cup final, as Australia really struggled to get the run rate going in subcontinent conditions that he was familiar with playing in.

@@Bernie8330 Not desperate. And I never suggested to omit Ponting or Mark Waugh. The player in the 14 man squad I would've swapped Jones with was Michael Slater. I still stand by what I thought at the time, that it was a mistake having Slats in the squad as he was horribly out of form in ODIs (got dumped during the World Series after only scoring 51 runs from 6 innings @ 8.5) and Deano's record and experience on turning pitches in hot subcontinent conditions could've been the difference. It was a waste having Slats in the squad with such poor form and was never going to play a game during the World Cup unless there was a massive injury crisis. Top 7 batting lineup I would've had was: Taylor, M Waugh, Jones, Ponting, S Waugh, Bevan, Healy Ponting batted at #4 six times during the World Series, so it wasn't a position foreign to him. 1996 was one of the most inexperienced World Cup squads the Aussies ever had and the Aussies learned a lesson in the future that you can't go into major tournaments with a large bulk of the squad lacking international experience, especially in difficult subcontinent conditions: Slater (33) Bevan (25) Ponting (16) Fleming (14) Law (14) Lee (6) Slater/Bevan/Ponting/Fleming/Law/Lee had only just over 100 ODIs between those them before the start of the Aussie's first match vs Kenya after the Sri Lankan one was forfeited.

@@Bernie8330 Ponting has an outstanding record and was the better test batsman than Deano. However, in ODIs, Deano averaged 44.61 (2nd best batsmen of his generation behind Viv Richards) in an era when pitches offered much more for bowlers (more bounce, swing, seam and spin), the quality of bowlers was better and boundaries in Australia were at least (on average) 10m+ longer than they are today. There's pitches he batted on (e.g. 1993 SCG vs West Indies) where the game would've been called off if the same situation happened today. Watching highlights of that low-scoring match the other day, there's absolutely no way umpires and match officials would've allowed the match to continue with balls shooting off on a good length, sharp seam movement, and batsmen would've been complaining in the media (like they do all the time these days on the rare occasion the pitch remotely offers something for the bowlers). Batsmen have now become too molly-coddled, and flat-track bullies are idolized and glorified by the commentators, fans, media, and sponsors. Grounds were also full-sized (no ropes) during the first few years of Ponting's career and during that time he also faced some quality bowlers, but he really piled on the bulk of his runs during the 2000s when most pitches were like the flat tracks that have become commonplace today.
@Bernie8330
@Bernie8330 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAusJT Ponting piled the bulk of his runs post 2000 because he was 26 years of age and older and at his peak after this period. Ponting faced some pretty damn good bowlers and scored 30 tons to Jones's 7 - all 7 of Jones's tons came in a 4 year period from 1986-90 ... 24 of Pontings came between 2001 and 2011. A 2 run difference in average is not significant. Ponting made 5 world cup tons, Jones none and one of those world cup tons was one of the great finals innings. Ponting is our best one day bat by far, it's a nobrainer.

There's no comparison. His record against the West Indies was dismal. 7 non-dead tests against them and not a single half century. His only two scores of 50 or more against them were in dead rubbers.

@@TheCleaner76 That was Tim Zoehrer. Jones's extra marital affair began in 1991 when he was 30 and it was with the 18 year old daughter of a powerful business tycoon. She later had a love child with him, and he is 11 years old.

Who cares what they thought. I was the one who enjoyed watching him come to the crease. For that reason the Australian selectors can go eat shit. I've followed South Africa since 1994 and proud to say I don't follow a team of sledgers and cheats. Brad Haddin is the biggest cheat I've ever seen in world cricket. There are many more Australians who should have kept their mouths shut on the field. This is why other teams dont respect the Aust team.

Oh boy do I remember his omission from the squad to NZ. As a Kiwi, we couldn't believe he wasn't there, he was that good. Ironically it made him a bit of an anti-hero and quite popular here in NZ where previously he'd been disliked due to his battle with Richard Hadlee

Manish Pandey is a better batsman than Dean Jones. Manish Pandey scored an unbeaten century against Australia in Australia in Sydney SCG while chasing the target 330.

Whats that got to do with the cricket team? A player sleeping with someone's daughter has no relevance to the team. Its nobody's business. Besides Bob Simpson wasn't running the ACB. And why wasn't the daughter punished? So if a man and a woman have an affair the man cops the consequences and the woman isn't affected at all? Thats bloody disgraceful. Maybe Bob Simpson should have pinished his daughter instead of Deano?
