Ddin't read the novel but I think he actually wanted to talk about other students targetting him but was scared to lead and offer another person to target. I also think he actually knows a bit about Ayano's true self a bit because of karaizuwa changing.

Your not far off. Hirata knows that Ayano is better than he pretends, though I doubt he knows just how much better (no one really does). He doesn't know Ayano has been targeted though, he's just desperate to stop the expulsion but there is no way out. By turning to Ayano, he's basically praying- he understands deep down that he can't. (IIRC in the books he even asks Ayano to pick for him, defering the responsibility)

Being in Ayano's head is a completely different experience. I'm a HUGE reader and COTE is by far the best thing I've ever read- for your own sake pick them up.
