The Cotopaxi was actually a real ship lost in the 1920’s I think in the Bermuda Triangle She was found after the filming of close encounters and was still a bit of a mystery when that was filmed

I love the way the light shifts from panel to panel on the planetary base. Gives a wonderful sense of movement and realism. The fact that the shots are lingering on the ship, the clouds and the planet really lets you see the environment.

A lot new filmmakers forgot or never learned to appreciate space, spaceships and the right music. This sequence is what scifi movie is all about, which is why I never understood why JJ Abram cover up 99.999% of the screen with lens flares.

Beautiful modelling, design, scenery, lighting and cinematography. A strong Alien/Prometheus vibe. My only gripe is the way the ship moves. The direction of its thrust seems to have nothing to do with its direction of motion. I think there was a ship named "Cotopaxi" in The Expanse, so I was primed to expect newtonian physics.

IMHO there is no better start of a story than a ship drifting through deep space, stumbling onto remains from a civilization from eons and eons ago. It's a story that could take you anywhere - philosophy, hard sci fi, body horror...

They weren't flying particularly fast. So i can forgive some bulky structuring & sloppy aerodynamics, If that's what you're getting at.

Very good. To enhance the exhaust effect & sell the changing course of the ship the exhaust particles need to be slightly flexible when the ship turns, they look too rigid. Also right before the wide establishing shot of the tunnel you should insert a shot where the camera is positioned planet surface level and the ship flies overhead, the camera tilts down revealing the tunnel entrance wall, then cut to the pre-existing wide shot of the tunnel. This will help make the sequence more dynamic.

The scene is very pretty but has a lot of technical problems. First, the ship should be entering backwards (you need to slow down from orbital velocities). Once they are in the atmosphere they can rotate around with engines to the rear. With atmospheric drag the engines do need to be firing. When the ship is entering the shaft either the engines should be down to control descent velocity or the ship should shift to belly engines for a vertical descent.

Why is the ship under constant acceleration (engines burning continuously)? This doesn't make sense, nor does the "nose down" maneuver to enter the ring structure.
@miket2120
@miket2120 7 ай бұрын
It's a common thing in sci-fi vessels: engines gotta be on all the time. I've only seen realistic engine use in a few movies or series. Alien comes to mind when the Nostromo executes a short burn to move away from it's refinery structure. 2001: A Space Odyssey has no engines running. It's all a visual thing, to give visual interest to the vessel. That or they have to keep the engines running because those advanced engines are really cranky and finicky and they're afraid they won't start back up again if they shut them down.

Because it’s no longer in space, but in an atmosphere. You need thrust to overcome drag. Face it, that design is not very aerodynamic. It’s not going to glide very well.

@@jeanfrancoisriemer1770, you’re right. As bulky as that thing is, the whole ship should be glowing red from friction. However I was just addressing the question asked. I didn’t feel like writing a dissertation. I didn’t make the video, so you don’t have to apologize to me. I don’t think it’s realistic either.

the thrusters / engine emissions would appear different in space vs in atmosphere. Further, as the ship descends those thrusters would have been throttled down otherwise it would have kept accelerating. very elegant rendering.

Why are the rocket engines firing the whole time when the ship is supposedly slowing for reentry?
@MrAbrandao
@MrAbrandao 7 ай бұрын
The problems with traditional Sci-fi are that : first they are stuck with rocket propulsion sistems.. second they fail to consider fisic laws... you see if the ship is descending, why propulsion is on? if entering the tunel why had first?

Great work. My one suggestion is to slow down the camera and the movement. Make it 25% to 50% slower so we can appreciate the details and the audience can take it all in. Let the suspense slowly build up. .

Nice graphic but as is often the case in movies the ship's maneuver violates basic laws of physics and space flight. A ship moving in orbit around a planet is moving very fast and would either leave orbit or burn in the atmosphere using its reactors as depicted in this nice graphic animation. A real spaceship would need to brake to fall in the planet's gravitational field. The reactors would fire in the direction the ship is moving to break. It would certainly not use its reactors to move down in the planet's atmosphere towards the surface by pushing the ship forward. A spaceship is not a plane.
