The thing I find funny about Cotton taking 50 rounds from a Zero, is that the primary armament of a Mitsubishi Zero are two 20 mm Type 99 Autocannons mounted on the wings. Apparently that is something you could just shrug off, but some small arms fire to the shins he could not.

The Japanese did terrible things to captured soldiers. So much so that they where viewed as worse than the Germans. In their culture they can't surrender, so they viewed POW's as less than human.

While it’s very obvious he greatly exaggerated his war stories, in the episode where he has the hallucinations it seems like he was still dealing with some heavy PTSD and guilt from killing all the enemy soldiers.
