Very interesting to listen to, I recognize some of the issues so it explains more why some things went the way it did with my Celadons, hard to come by any good breeding material in Sweden

Thanks for this video, it was really fascinating. When I originally got quail I thought celadons sounded so cool and I had two birds who lay blue eggs, but the more I have learned the less interested I am in them. Stunning egg color both with and without spots, but I don't want to weaken the flock by having celadons. Genetics are fascinating.

Sorry to hear about quarrels on other quail groups. Seems that we as humans always find ways to inject drama into whatever we do.

Great interview! This explains all of my frustration with my quail. I bought what were supposed to be Jumbo Pharos, but turned out to be a mix of colors (Rosetta and Tuxedos) some of which laid blue eggs. Every. Single. Male was super aggressive. I only kept 2 to fertilize another round of hatching eggs. The second batch, I lost almost all to wry neck. I'm not continuing with any quail that carries the celadon gene ever again. The blue color is pretty, but just not worth it!

Very interesting... I think all the egg deformities are easily explained: eggs are coloured in exactly the same place where the shells are formed, after all. If celadon is a gene that affects the shell gland (or even more of the oviduct) it's understandable that egg colour is not the only thing affected. Many of those deformities could be the result of two eggs being in the shell gland at the same time. Having multiple yolks in other eggs supports that the deformity problem could be 'overcrowding' of the oviduct. If the eggs travel out inconsistently timewise, there could be double yolkers, deformed and completely normal eggs from the same hen depending on where the 'rush hour' is currently located in her system. As for the chick deformities: maybe celadon is a gene that affects not the oviduct but "green and brown pigments" eg biliverdin and protoporphyrin, which are key components in blood breakdown and production. "Incorrect" blood during fetal developement sounds pretty bad... 😌I have no answers, but I do have my first ever eggs in my incubator. There are some celadon/carrier eggs mixed with plain quail eggs. My plan is to tag the chicks according to the eggs they come from: there is 3 different "plain" egg types and 1-2 blue-ish egg types, so 4-5 different moms. Celadon are definitely not my goal, so if I keep a rooster from these chicks it will be from a brown egg🐣🐤🐥

Thank you for this. I am just getting these deformities and had no idea why. My birds lay bluish eggs with various amounts of spots. I got my first set from a Craigslist breeder and know nothing about the genetics. But I have clear blue tinges in my eggs and all these problems you mentioned. I need clean genetics to get started again

Very interesting. I am wondering if it is the celadon allele itself that is causing these health issue or if the health issues are coming from another mutated allele/gene that was silently bread within the celadon line. If the second case, maybe selected outcrossing with pharaohs and then "restarting" a celadon line (well ideally many different lines as unrelated in blood as possible) from such pharaohs would be worth investigating. Also possible that the original celadon lines were too closely related...and the gene pool is now just too small. I am not a genetics expert, but too small of a gene pool could cause issues like this, too, no? Either way, maybe worth reaching out to a university to research on this? This would make a GREAT PhD thesis...

I believe Klaus has started studies and tests to see if he can determine what's causing the health issues and if they can be bred out by introducing clean lines. I will have him jump in and give you a better answer.

Hello. Yes, I am currently testing my bloodlines of celadons, it's not an official test or thesis or whatever, it's just what I am trying to figure out on my own, not actually what causes that issues, but if you can avoid them by doing something differently. So far I have created 2 different CE bloodlines from Plein quails, testing them now, they are going into the lockdown today. Another eggs are going to hatch out week later, the parents are now placed with current Pharoah CE bloodline to mix them to see their offspring and after that compare both results together eventually cross them to see if problem will last or not. I am doing it just because I have invested so much into celadon projects and my results are available for whoever wants to continue and start something else. I am currently on 7th gen of one CE group and will probably breed CE out of them because losses from eggs to chicks are still high no matter what I am crossing them with. My "opinion" is that celadon itself is not responsible overbred for profit and breeding program was not chosen by quality but numbers. I have created my own fawn line up, so far they look good. I am posting very often everything I notice on my Facebook 🙂

I'm thinking on crossing Texas a&m with celadon.
@kathleenmonsegue9700

There isn’t anymore Texas a&m what you have are English whites. That line hasn’t existed in many years. The university stopped experimenting or creating and or keeping that line. So whoever sold you those eggs or birds just used the name to increase the price and “sell” or make their eggs popular or sell faster. That was what I was told several months ago.

I am watching this very late. I have been breeding celadon for 2 years. The celadon I got were from a great breeder. It wasn’t her fault these birds are psychos. They are very small and very aggressive. Poor hatch rates. Lots of curly toes. The aggression is the worst part and the reason I cannot continue with them. All of my Roos were named after serial killers. They were just the worst. I call them murder-birds. I’m looking forward to a fresh start with jumbos from SWGB. I’m so sorry we are having all this drama. Keep up the good work Terry!!

So is inbreeding issues only for Celadon quails or also for wildtypes? I guess I’ll have to introduce new quails every other generation? Edit: oops so it seems to be something we’ve introduced in celadon quails

Q I hope I am not to late asking questions about celadon gene. I an new quail breeder and I am trying to learn. However I have some experience bredding canaries. There are canaries with some very interested genes: they are recessive white and dominant white (of course there are lots of other interesting genes but I want to use whites to illustrate my questions. Dominant whites only exist as heterocygotic; the homocigotic (sorry my spelling) combination is deadly therefore we never pair white X white; we use a yellow as a consort. On the other hand recessive white X receive white can be done for a couple of generation only, otherwise the offspring will be weak. So, we cross recessive white X yellow having white gene. I did not catch who were the parents for celadon's generation 2 and the rest. I hope somebody can tell me how to choose the parents for celadon. Thanks Carlos .

I'm not sure what the drama was all about, but I can't help but laugh at the idea of drama between quail groups. Toxicity seems to exist in every hobby group nowadays. People take themselves far too seriously. Sorry for the woman that fell center of it. Kinda sounds like cancel culture with the ostracization.
