Could a $3,000 Built In Coffee Machine Save you Money? Wolf EC24, EC24S & Bosch BCM8450UC

The publisher of this video omits quite a few things in his "savings" analysis. On the coffee side, he's forgetting the cost of the beans or, god forbid, you should buy the manufacturer's "pods" (for some built-ins). But what about the cost of repairs? I am generally a fan of Miele appliances and opted to get a Miele coffee system in our current house. We paid around $3k for it in 2020. Then, one morning in 2022 I was greeted by a mysterious "F77" error code when I tried to brew my morning coffee. This error code has no obvious trouble shooting directions and I ended up having to get a repair person who told me it needed a new 'ceramic valve' - cost? $1300! It's now a bit over a year later (April 2023) and I've gotten a different code: F74 - again, nothing I can do to trouble shoot. When I email Miele's customer support, they tell me...wait for it....I need a new ceramic valve! Different error code - but same supposed solution. I'm still a Miele fan - and somewhat a captive audience since the cutout for the Miele coffee system isn't easily filled by another coffee system - but their coffee system quality seems to stink. And reviews of coffee systems - which always rank Miele's highly - never keep these systems around long enough to take long-term quality into consideration. Anyway - the above video is nonsense. I think all coffee systems will have issues over time - and since they're built-in, you'll end up calling a costly technician to fix it.

We've had clients run 30,000 cups through their Miele coffee system with zero issues. Sorry you've had problems - but no machine is perfect and everything breaks at some point.

@@signaturekitchensfl632 - that’s nice. And similar to what the repair man just said - as he was unable to fix there machine at my house and carted it away to be fixed at the shop…a week ago. If I get another valve replacement bill, I’ll look into whether the lemon law applies to appliances :-( Incidentally, the repair person put the machine into maintenance mode and noted that I sure drink a lot of coffee. The machine had put out 1700 cups in its 3 years of operation. That got me thinking that unless those clients you speak of are commercial outfits, there’s no way they could have consumed 30,000 cups - those Miele coffee machines haven’t existed long enough for one to reach that number of cups!

These machines are typically built into a cabinet and not the wall directly. Some units can be plumbed but others require you to fill the water reservoir. Having it plumbed can be a nice feature, but it then requires a water and potentially a drain line being run to the cabinet which makes the install more difficult and expensive. Both the Bosch and the Wolf units are great and have good reputations. I wouldn't have an issue having either of these in my home.

Miele has a very good machine - what i don't like about it is it brings the milk into the system and requires a TON of cleaning. The new wolf model keeps the milk outside the system and therefore doesn't need to be cleaned as frequently.

We recently replaced a unit that had nearly 35,000 cups of coffee brewed through it over the course of something like 10-15 years. Even if you got a basic cup of black coffee at Starbucks you're talking $40,000+ not to mention espresso, latte, cappuccinos....but you're right - if you don't drink coffee it will not save you money.

What a load of crap. I'm not spending a cent on coffee outdoors, so the whole video is nonsense for me. And what about the costs of quality beans, fresh milk? Tablets to clean the machine, decalcify it every three months, using a decalcifying unit, the costs of electricity to power these 1600 watt machines? Then of course the costs of sugar and other stuff you like in your coffee. I think they are worth the price and I have nothing against them, but if you make such a claim, count in all costs.

Sorry you didn't gain any value - We did the exercise as the how long it would take to recoup the money for the cost of the machine. Which is slightly different than what you're suggesting which is more a total cost of ownership - which has value - but it still doesn't change the math even factoring in all of the maintenance items. You still stand to save thousands of dollars vs starbucks with a built in coffee machine.

have 41,000 brews on such a machine. $0.10 per brew, coffee cost ~ $0.10 - 0.20 per brew.... And it the taste is phenomenal
