Well, he did gain a son when he thought he might not be able to father one. He can have a relationship with his son having the least possible contact with the mother. It's not ideal, especially when decisions have to be made, but he can still have a healthy bond with his son and, hopefully, mitigate the bad influence his mother is likely to have on him.
