Considering the Roman legion never saw that kind of warfare before, I would suspect the sound of gunfire and explosions plus seeing their men dropping like flies rapidly and from a far distance without knowing what's killing them, they'd probably retreat. They would think they're fighting gods.

@@shadowdeslaar maori lost the war. Casualties -745 to 2,145. Bravery has nothing to do with the battles, they still lost. Also, of SIGNIFICANT NOTE, they were fighting a force with, as of now, significantly outdated equipment. The Brits were fighting mainly with an 1853 Enfield musket-effective range of 100m. Comparatively to this thought experiment, comparatively to the modern USMC rifle, the m27, which has an effective range of 550m. Of note, the USMC is the branch that prides itself on marksmanship, spending more time on the range during boot than any other service branch. Maori were less advanced in warfare, compared to the Romans, and with the advancement in rifle technology, would not stand a chance to semi-automatic weapons fire. Best way for Romans to win is actually give a dozen guns/rifles/or heck even muskets to the Romans some 20 years earlier and have them study them, tinker with them, possibly learn how to make some themselves even if hand made and no where near as advanced. As time pass over these 20 years Romans would do what Romans do best. Perfect what they have learned. And as such they'll all have guns of their own even if not as advanced as the Marines rifles it'll be enough to even the plain field. And even if 1 Marine dies for every 50 Romans it'll still end in a Roman victory.

@@Newie69MK well it's all hypothetical. Time travel isn't anything so Marines are unlikely to meet Classical Romans. But with thousands of years of existence, 20 years is but an eyeblink for the Romans and is a relatively short time for any nations to grow from having classical weaponry to modern weaponry. For any other nations or empires it would be impossible, but the Romans were engineers, builders and scholars in addition to being the ideal military machine. They didn't just conquer and plunder. They learned from the conquered, reversed engineer their weapons, their techniques, their strategies. And then they Romanize the conquered to pacify rebellions. Though sadly that last part didn't work so good last time. Either way aside from time travel the only other way for Marines to fight Roman legions would be for Rome to have survived and endured as an empire up to today. Italy isn't Rome. Their former territory isn't Rome. I won't go Political but if the true Rome had lasted up to today they would of had an additional 2000 years to upgrade and perfect their military and would have access to modern weapons either way.

Former Marine Infantry here. So many things this video ignores on both sides but I can give you more information from my pov A rifle platoon will have 9 light machine guns, 9 grenade launchers, 1 semi-auto grenade launcher, 1 shotgun, 2 frag grenades each, AT-4s, Laws, and Claymores. Our greatest weapons would be radios, watches, and a compass. We are trained to shoot a man-sized target accurately at 500m and our rifles can accurately hit an area at 800m. We practice stress shoots at ranges 100m-400m and we know how to shoot while moving in any direction. 1 shot every few seconds? A target-rich environment like an approaching legion army would be murder. We most likely wouldn't even use the 249s, to save on ammo. At 400m almost every shot would be a hit because you wouldn't have to move your barrel much to find the next target. With our optics, you don't even have to aim really. Just put the little arrow between their collar bone and fire. Hitting them high, low, left, or right won't matter, 5.56 is designed to wound, not kill. You can hit them in the shoulder and the bullet can exit out their ass. They will probably have more wounded than dead after the battle, wasting time and resources to try and save their men's lives. With our camouflage and range, they most likely won't even know where we are shooting from. The battle would be over in a few minutes, although I highly doubt they would be stupid enough to do a frontal assault if they know what a gun is. Our goal is to win the war, not the battle. A fight like that would use a lot of our precious ammo and would still leave most of their forces intact. We would most likely "nope" the hell out of there. The video got it wrong, we don't want to face them in the open. Chase us into the trees, up hills and mountains were their numbers won't matter. That's what we want. We will follow their caravan around, attacking their supply lines instead of them. We will set up ambushes and booby traps, we will kill their sentries at night and shoot grenades into their tents. Food and water won't be a major factor, we will survive. It will be ammo, we would have to maximize every engagement to break the will of the legion soldiers or their commanding officer before we run out.

@Shyamkumar Khangembam Not even that. The Marines don't have to outright kill them, they just have to wound them enough to take them down. The Romans aren't exactly going to be able to pick them up during the battle, and they likely don't know how the hell to deal with bullet wounds if they did. There's also the fact that rounds from your typical 5.56 or 7.62 are likely to overpenetrate Roman armor. Meaning that, since they'd probably charge at them in formation. The marines would likely be getting multiple hits with each bullet.

Yeah right, arrows aren’t piercing plate armor or the ACH (helmet). Legs, arms etc. This exercise isn’t even factoring in snipers in ghillie suits hitting them from a kilometer out and taking out every person who looks like he’s giving an order. They wouldn’t even be able to find them to attack them. All that would save any ancient Army is having someone really stealthy (Native Americans) that can attack while they’re sleeping or whatever or the marines run out of ammunition. They usually only have a couple hundred bullets each. X by 43, 8600. They would have to be about 60% accurate to hit every Roman soldier once (5k) not including explosives and other non assault rifle rounds. Idk, depends on a bunch of variables, could gone either way.

@Darren Harper I appreciate your insight into the ancient capabilities. Were there that many archers in a legion? Pretty comparable to the mortar assets in a Marine Infantry battalion with regard to their power as a combat multipliers against era appropriate enemies. One common mistake, and lack of battle understanding that's all too common is the idea that every round will cause an enemy casualty. In reality, it is hundreds and sometimes thousands of rounds expended for Each and Every casualty in modern battles. Yes, Marines are not as wasteful with ammo as army dogs, but the American culture they all come from is radically wasteful, and that includes Marines. Snipers might be the exception, but snipers are a battalion asset, not part of a rifle platoon. The use of arrows, I'm pretty sure, was not primarily to inflict single casualties, but to attrit and demoralize. Now I can see the Romans making some adjustments in this scenario of numbers vs. modern firepower. A few well hidden archers in several outlying spots would be very effective at completely immobilizing a Marine platoon or squad. A squad could probably eliminate such pockets if they were few enough, but not without taking critical casualties. I presume that you are also thoughtful enough to give legionaries the credit of quickly learning how to duck and keep to covered ground as much as possible. When I think of morons, it's not the Roman legionaries I think of but rather the idiots who think that only a modern warfighter has any brains or ability to tactically adapt. One example that fascinates me is the effectiveness of the Maori warriors against the technologically superior British. Where else but in the American colonies (and comparable tech against the Redcoats there) did anyone stand up to the British and compel them to negotiate? It's not really a rhetorical question bc I'm always learning more, but it's a thought provoking thing is it not?

“Any technology not understood is indistinguishable from magic,” Arthur Clarke. People arguing that Roman generals are smart and wouldn’t think guns are magical are missing the point. The M-4 or a Grenade would be magic to the Romans, you’re talking 2000 years of technological advancements. If beings came from 2000 years in the future to modern day their tech would be magic to us. We’d have know idea how it operated or how it functioned outside that it could kill us and we had not recourse to prevent it. Imagine your a Roman General and you see one dude standing 500m away from you. You hear thunder and your lieutenant head explodes. You just witnessed magic as that point. Now you hear several more crackling of thunder and more people around you dying and all you see is one guy. Finally fear is 💯 a factor in this, go look up Guy Gabaldon. One USMC captured 1,000 Japanese during WWII.

A German section (squad) has 2 MG 42s, making 8 for a platoon. Just those 8 guns are throwing out about 8,000 rounds per minute. They probably will begin engaging at 600-1000m (the world record for 600m sprint is about a minute), which means no legionnaire would be alive to engage the platoon. As a side note, US infantry received special training to deal with the psychological effects of the MG42.

@@antoinelachapelle3405 In other words, assuming moral isnt an issue, even the loss of legate would not make legionares cease to function since each command line knows what to do. And theres still command structure below centurions. Its not that those 80 men only listen to 1 centurion. Smallest unit is 8 men group, contubernium (have to google it). So, if u kill the legate, tribunes, centurions and all contubernium leaders, then youd make them very leaderless. Otherwise, march forward and go stabby2 is quite a simple command. But, seriously, rather than snipe them, its easier to just rain bullet to the mass of legionares. 600 yards effective range? Just shoot upward a bit to reach 1000 yards. No need to be accurate. Just shoot at the mass. Youd hit. And each hit will bring a legionare down, regardless where the bullet hit, due to kinetic energy. I doubt the shield n armor could withstand an assault rifle bullet.

The marines would likely practice the "rule of .45" and just be the power behind the throne. One or two might even have some interest in history and understand basic Roman culture and politics. Chances are even higher that some of them would understand Italian or Spanish and pick up Latin fairly quickly. They would understand that they had no modern supports other than each other, so would be difficult to corrupt or split apart. For a start, everyone would want to stay close to the medic. What's a bag of gold worth to a man who can simply take what he wants? A few might attempt to become warlords somewhere, but how would they fare when their weapons were no longer of use and those around them have better melee weapons and skills? I agree that they would settle, but most would be more valuable for their knowledge than as a military unit, particularly the officers who would have been given an understanding of classical warfare tactics during their training. Imagine if the Romans had plate armour, stirrups, lances, crossbows or even black-powder? A few clues about how to generate electricity, steam-power and railways, even the internal combustion engine, synthetic materials? How about national identity, democracy or the scientific method? Steel, rubber, even plastics. Most important would be the knowledge of germs, bacteria, disease etc and ways to protect against them. Lastly, stop using lead near anything you consume! No cutlery, no plates and no water pipes! We'd probably still be speaking Latin today.

You're talking about medieval soldiers against the terrifying crayon eaters? Let's put it this way folks, the Marine corp was investigated for an extensive amount of headshots and being suspected of executing enemies. Turns out that just at 100 to 200 meters Marines were just good at popping heads. Further more, they didn't take into consideration any LMGs that the marines would have taken into the fight. And finally.... you leave marines to do whatever the fuck they need to do to win a fight, they do some grunterific things. Perfect example, the M2 Stinger. You tell Marines something needs to die, it's going to die. Also, the side arm was forgotten in the combat here.

@Jugement doesn't matter. 1 round has the potential to kill more than 1 soldier in the legion. Another thing, they wouldn't encircle the Marines at all. You think the soldiers are dumb enough to let themselves be out fRoman's. It is called a covering retreat. Please for your sake do some simple thinking. The Marines have the advantage of camo. Second, the noise from the rifles alone would probably panic the Romans. As for the Roman's ability to starve the Marines out? I think not. This isn't a siege Marines wouldn't wait it out. 1. They would observe and understand their foe from a distance. 2. They would take out the leaders causing mass panic among the Roman ranks, even desertion. 3. Once they even thought of regrouping and pushing the attack against the Marines it is too late. They would have thinned the heard quite a bit. 4. They would probably stagger tossing grenades to keep the enemy from forming up. OR burn them right off to capitalize on casualties. 5. 1 shot isn't 1 kill in the numbers of legions 1 shot is more like 2 or 3 kills. Figuring they are using steel core or depleted uranium. 6. Without any leadership and not covering strong ground on the battlefield they would likely panic at their numbers lost. Again faltering morale means more would desert the battle.. Perhaps brush up on your tactics as the Marines would use everything they have gear wise. This means binoculars as well. As I said, fuck around and find out. Not a redneck thing to say. But it is nice to know that you have no real logical argument here.

What about Scout/Sniper's hitting targets at 1,000-1,200 yards? If the Marines went on the offensive, it would be even worse for the Romans. NVG and thermal would be a nightmare for the legion. The Legion would win easily because in the first 20 seconds of combat each legionary shot dead or even slightly wounded would initiate the terrible ripple of a time paradox - changing the future and meaning several or all of the marines were never born and the thirteen American colonies did not become independent until 1937. This would have a devastating effect on the morale of the marines as their companions, insignia and underwear alter or vanish into an alternative dimension and for reasons that are not immediately clear to the startled marines their officer can now only speak Nahuatl. The surviving marines would have no option but to surrender and spend the rest of their miserable lives as slave labour cleaning the bogs in a third rate Tripoli garum factory. The Roman empire would go on to conquer the entire globe and several adjacent planets and star systems because of the leap in technology they'd gained from the captured weaponry and equipment.

Eric Price The Marines were born and raised in the modern day, they understand how firearms work and wouldn’t be (relatively) shocked if gunfire started up. A Roman raised 2000 years ago would have no understanding of a firearm, much less an automatic one too. To them, it’d seem like they were being struck down randomly and mini explosions were happening all around them. That tends to demoralize an enemy pretty quick when you don’t understand how the hell you’re sustaining losses.

At that time period, the Romans would likely believe they were being killed by actual Gods considering the range they're being shot from, the sound of the weapons and grenade impacts, and the fact that they wouldn't be able to see what the hell was shooting at them from that range at the start. Being struck down from 500+ yards with no sight on the enemy and no mental picture or possible imagination of what it could be would be absolutely demoralizing. Remember, they didn't have contacts or glasses at that time, so many of those Romans wouldn't have been able to see very far at all so they might not even think they were being attacked by other humans as the Marines would be in low profile firing positions as opposed to just standing up in the middle of a field. And, imagine if the Marines ambushed them at night? Holy hell, the fear in that legion would be epic. All the Marines really have to do is have ammo runners working overtime, be well positioned to nullify the cavalry, and pick the time and place of engagement. Lastly, if Marines need to retreat or move positions, they'd peel off and continue to put rounds on the Romans. Imagine seeing someone retreat while still killing you as you advance before you can do anything in response other than run into the hail of fire. No contest. Defeated morale = loss for the Romans.

Assuming between the 40 of them they have enough knowledge of Roman History and Latin to pull it off. Obviously it would be less direct assault-y and more guerilla campaign, leave carvings on trees in Latin, (depending what time period they were sent back to), talk about events in the near future, talk about Caesar obviously. Tell them things they know, then tell them some apocalypse shit is going to happen very soon. Tell them that you are the Gods, and that you are angry, and that the empire is coming to an end. Just freak them right out, and then watch them dance. The Romans were hella superstitious so given enough shock and awe, I see three scenarios: 1: They laugh it off and try to slaughter you and just end up replicating Binkov's scenario. 2: They shit their pants in awe and straight up handover power to the Empire to whomever controls the platoon. Also, I remember a lecture on the battle of marathon where the lecturer talked about a modern attempt at recreating the supposed full speed charge across all that distance, with trained PE people at college level wearing weighted clothing to simulate the weight of the hoplite panoply...... iirc 1 of them made it across the distance, just barely, in absolutely no condition to then go into melee combat. (yes that was specifically about greek hoplites, but it does give a good idea of what a long charge across open ground in heavy armor will cost in terms of fatigue) The lecture was from professor Garrett Fagan, from the TTC series Great Battles of the Ancient World, either lecture 10 'The Battle of Marathon' or lecture 19 'Legion vs Phalanx - Six Pitched Battles', if I am remembering this correctly.

This is an absurd question. The Legion could not get within 200m of a Marine rifle platoon without being annihilated by rifle and machine-gun fire. As soon as the fire team leaders engaged with 40mm grenades, anybody still standing would be fragged. Of course, the Marines would shoot the Centurions first, and then the general. This would be a slaughter. All the Marines would have to do is keep moving to stay out of range of the pila. Now, if the legion had ballista and other artillery, the Marines might need to target their crews early in the battle. Who is going to man ancient artillery against Marines who can kill them at 500m? To lose that battle, you would have to be the dumbest 2nd Lieutenant ever to graduate IOC.

Marines would win no problem and likely with zero casualties. Ancient roman body armor can not defeat 5.56 unless at very long range. If every marine was only a rifle man carrying a standard load of 7 magazines, then they would have over 9000 rounds. This is not accurate though because they also have machine gunners with large amounts of ammo so they should have plenty of ammo to kill everyone. Something else to consider in a real battle is morale. The romans were disciplined but likely could not deal with seeing several waves of attacks be absolutely destroyed in a very short amount of time. The sound of gunfire would also make an ancient soldier very scared. In reality the marines would probably only have to kill a few thousand before the romans are retreating. Ancient battles with thousands of casualties last HOURS, they would lose that in 10 minutes.

you do understand that. its 9030 roundds. That means the casualty ratio per bullet has to be under 2 roounds per soldier. Sure you might get a multi casualty, per round. That does not offset the required ratio. This very fact, means that the battle will boil down to preset battle conditions. This is just specultive terriroty, not any real justifications. Realistically, there is to much suspension of realism and disbelief to really make a proper judgement. There are far to many underlying factors, even if we vaccum and pited 43 marines vs 5000 roman soldiers. Iniativie, enviornment, distance, intent and purpose, are some of the minor things to think about. These are just 2 very different types of soldiers, developed and utilized verseus vastly different opponent. It is basically nonsensical to even try to reason this. All is well until the facts change a little. A Marine Infantry Platoon is comprised of three riflemen squads led by a squad leader. That’s 3 fire teams (4 men) + a squad leader, making it 13 per squad. And the fourth squad is comprised of 4 M240B medium machine gun crews (3 men: loader, gunner, spotter) + a squad leader. Furthermore, the advanced tactics such as “zone of fire” and “talking guns” increase the effectiveness and conversely the deadlines of the platoon itself. Bringing the total count of the platoon to 52 and then a platoon sergeant, in the Marine Corps it’s usually a Staff Sergeant (E-6), bringing the total to 53. A platoon tends to be the deadliest of all formations because it can produce more firepower than a single squad, but is substantially more versatile than a company (4 platoons). - Sources: I’m a Marine Infantryman.

The fact he didn't even bring up machine guns is kinda weird. Raking fire against a giant line formation with multiple lines stacked behind it, would be absolute slaughter even a thousand yards away. As long as you ranged the shots correctly you literally couldnt miss. A Marine platoon going into war would also have SAW's, Mark 19's, and possibly even 50's, depending on the platoon they may even have mortars. This hypothetical is limiting Marines to just their M-16's or M-4's, without the M203 grenade launchers. I'll bite though. During Desert Strom the US launched an investigation into the Marine Corp due to the number of headshots being recorded. The US thought we may be violating the Geneva Convention and executing unarmed POW's. The result of the investigation determined that we were just that fucking good. So you may want to up that accuracy number from 50 to say 80 since the Romans know jack about guerilla warfare. A platoon of Marines would wipe the floor with all of Rome, and be drinking whiskey by week's end in Cesare's Palace all pissed off cause they haven't invented crayons yet, and there aren't any strippers in the palace. God help them if they pulled a platoon with Chesty Puller in charge, He'd take over that whole damn continent just to prove that Marines are the badest fighting force on the planet.

@@theodurnayne3874 firstly you dont need to kill every man to destroy the army as a fighting force, just keep eliminating commanders and it goes to shit, secondly, regarding the (at best) 3k rounds. a combat load for an infantryman is seven magazines, but can go up past ten-twelve mags. this isnt counting the five or so belts of ammo per SAW, of which there will be several in the platoon. even a pretty conservative count puts you around 8k rounds in a platoon, before you start including lose rounds to reload with, which is also pretty common to bring. then we have the sixty ish grenades, 40mm grenade launchers, side arms, plastic explosives etc. they dont always bring all the extra toys, but they would undoubtably have at least some. for this scenario 8k- 15k rounds is a pretty reasonable estimate
