This video is basically saying, if they totally redid the f1 car to be an indycar style car with less aero, the right engine that could do the 500 miles, they could win. As it stands as a simple outright question, The simple answer is no, the f1 car cant because of aero and the engine couldn't handle it and the brake energy recovery system doesnt work because there really isn't much braking.

I like the way you phrase the problem (“take Max’s car from parc ferme after the race and put it on the Indy grid”) - any other comparison isn’t fair, to be honest. They’re two completely different use cases with different design patterns. Yeah, the 2019 IndyCar is 14 seconds a lap slower at COTA, but that’s done with 10% of the budget and on a car that has to be heavy and strong to safely race on ovals. If you gave the Indy teams the ability to have an entire road-specific chassis, the gap could be closed quite a bit. F1 cars will always be faster on a circuit, but it’s kind of a apples and oranges question. As for ovals, you might be able to get an F1 car to be able to be competitive at Indy if you let the team work on aero and the like, but the car would be a death trap. The safety design of an F1 car is just so completely different as to make most of the parts of the car and tub relating to safety on a circuit either useless or actively dangerous on an oval. Not to discount the insane high-level amount of safety work done on F1 cars, but they don’t have to design around the expectation of hitting a wall at 230 mph in a typical accident. An IndyCar is a tank compared to an F1 car.

And yes, IndyCar drivers DO make those weightjacker and antiroll bar adjustments from IN the car while racing. There is an amusing onboard from several years ago where you see Tony Kanaan reach down and make an adjustment, and his suspension responds by saying "f*** this s***" and the car just randomly hooks roght into the wall.

He ignored the fact that F1 doesn't allow refueling and around 190 miles is as far as an F1 car can go on a full tank of fuel. So the F1 car might have a chance to win the Indy 190 but not gonna win the Indy 500. 🤣

Just a few thoughts, they would need to start the race with 500 miles worth of fuel or run the same fuel as indy cars that's really going to effect the top f1 teams more pit stops for tires which puts them laps down and still carrying the loads of fuel. I personally would like to see if the f1 engine would last 500 sustained miles at that rpm as well. Sweet video I subscribe from ohio usa 6:32

A major issue was overlooked in this video: Tire aerodynamics. NOTHING on an open wheel car produces more drag than the tires. They're one step short of being gigantic bricks to begin with, then they make things worse by spinning and disrupting the airflow even more. This is the primary reason modern open wheelers universally use narrower front tires - they reduce drag. As noted in the video, F1's tires are wider than IndyCar's by a not insignificant degree. The additional drag will be MASSIVE. An F1 car will not be able to overcome this without designing parts that go outside of series regulations. Now, the video is also outdated seeing as it was based on the old F1 regs. The new regs have produced much smoother aerodynamics, but the problem of the tires still remains. An F1 car could get very close, but if the changes were restricted to being within what's allowed by the F1 rulebook, it would not make it.

The Indy 500 used to be on the F1 calendar actually. Although it was way back, 1950-1960. In an era where the cars were way more similar. If you were looking to learn more about Indycar I would recommend "What Exactly is an IndyCar?" by S1apSh0es. Great little look at the origin, history and evolution of our openwheelers here in America. Such a rich history behind these things, without them American motorsport as a whole would look way different.

Its clear that the two cars are designed so differently to excel in their perspective environments that a heads up race would depend on which kind of track was being used. So it is an apple and oranges comparison as it stand. I too wonder that if you give an IndyCar team the opportunity to design a car to compete in F1 circuit could they field a competitive car. My guess is that they could be competitive.

I’ve been a lifelong fan of both F1 and IndyCar, they’re both awesome sports that come at things from opposite angles. I love the competition and diversity of IndyCar, and from a pure racing perspective, it just wipes the floor with F1. Formula One, however, is the pinnacle - it has the technology, the engineering competition, the prestige and the spectacle. They’re both amazing and absolutely complement each other. You really should watch the Indy 500 this year - open wheel oval racing is amazing to watch.

At Indy the engines are only producing about 550hp due to restricted boost. Boost is increased during qualifying. At the speeds they are going they can't go much faster or the drivers would require G suits, In 2001 the Texas CART race had be cancelled because the sustained high G's seen in practice were causing drivers to almost black out. A current F1 car could not sustain running maximum RPM for almost 3 hours and would also run out of fuel. If you allowed the F1 car to make changes then all Indycar would have to do is uncork the engines to max boost so they made their 750hp. The F1 cars are too draggy, do not have the correct suspension or fuel capacity so could not win Indy.

The Indy car would win easily. The race is 500 miles long, approximately 805 kilometers. A typical F1 race, let’s say Monza because it is also a high speed race, is approximately 365 kilometers long. (63 laps x 5.793 km) Therefore, before they have raced 100 laps of the 200 laps, Max’s race car would run out of fuel with no quick way to refuel it.😂

With the technical know how F1 teams have, they no doubt could build a winning race car for Indy, but it would have to be so modified it would no longer be an F1 car. If you took the Red Bull car racing this year and in two weeks put it on the Indy 500 grid, no way it could win because it wouldn’t last the 500 miles. Indy lasts almost 4 hours. F1 never races over 2 hours. The car would blow up. BTW, if I was British I’d be an F1 fan too, since F1 is basically a British sport and everyone else participating is just pretending. For the British racing fan, there’s no reason to follow any other series since they own Formula One.

No I don’t think they could. And they guy in the video is basing it if they completely change the car. The answer to your question is if you could say take a current F1 car to the Indy 500 and win. The answer is no. Also I think he is a little bit biased because he’s mainly an f1 channel and the majority of F1 fans tend to be biased towards f1 when it comes to comparing them to other sports. Basically what he’s saying is if F1 just out of the blue removed these regulations that hold them back to change everything to race on an oval. That’s like putting a stock car from the NASCAR cup series and let them spend an entire year changing the aero package from what it currently is which 670 hp to like 1000 hp. And making it aero dynamically dominated to where it could beat an Indycar. When in reality if you put one on the track under the cup rules and regulations like F1 they would get their butts handed to them.

I'm not sure that's true. The indycars are slightly faster in a straight line (the fastest an F1 car has ever been on an F1 circuit is 378 km/h (Valtteri Bottas at Baku in 2016), but they corner much faster. The F1 car would carry that speed through the corner better than the Indycar, I think, and thus be faster over a lap. Also, that Baku car was set up to drive a street circuit, not an oval. Honda once drove an F1 car at 397 km/h in a test environment, which is quite a bit faster than an Indycar in 500 race trim.

To answer your specific question on how it would fair if you just dropped Max Verstappen’s Red Bull F1 car into the Indy 500 the answer is it would not be competitive and the Indycar would destroy it. And sure like the original video pointed out, if F1 could develop an oval car it would indeed beat the current Indycar but in that scenario you’d have to assume Indycar teams would also be allowed an open rule book to develop their own car and that is where theoretically it would get interesting. The budgets and technology advantage of F1 vs the endless experience and past knowledge of how a car needs to be set up on an oval that Indycar teams would have. But plainly, no. A current F1 car would get lapped many times by a current Indycar at Indianapolis.
