@Jake. Ultimately it all comes down to economic survival. If the people of Scotland and the people of Northern Ireland feel that their interests are best served by leaving the Union and remaining within the EU then that is up to them and there is nothing that the English can do about that.

It has become increasingly obvious that Scotland has been steadily diverging from the rest of Britain, both culturally and politically, over the last couple of decades. In Northern Ireland(NI), the unquestioned Unionist majority has nearly vanished, and politics is breaking out of the old, sterile, sectarian headcount. The UK has got, at most, a ten year life expectancy. Whether it be Scotland, or NI, which leaves first is basically irrelevant. Whichever does go first will cause the collapse of the UK... The reality is that the English nationalism which drove Brixit does not give a single, solitary, damn about any of the three Celtic nations which make up the rest of the UK...

gloin10 What are you suggesting by saying the UK would collapse if either NI or Scotland left the union, do you think either of those small countries with their tiny population's combined that are less than the population of London would bring the UK to its knees, the Scotts led by Nicola Sturgeon who by the way is not popular in her own country might be fool hardy enough to vote to leave, but the Irish in my opinion would not, where would those tiny countries go if they left they would have to enter into another less lucrative alliance with the Europeans so hopping from one bed to another and who would they trade with if trade agreements with England had to be torn up and renegotiated, it is a combination of the Celtic prime ministers like Brown Blaire and Campbell that got us into the mess we are in now, Celts love to blame England for everything.

Free of what you loon? Free from tuition fees? Free from the most money spent on the NHS per capita than anywhere else in the UK? (incidentially Scotland has the highest rates of drug abuse, cardiovascular disease, and obesity related illnesses in europe). Free from England footing the bill for your debt levels, highest in Europe due to the economic mismanagement in Scotland via devolved powers? Germany will impose strict fiscal controls on Scotland if it wants to join the EU, as it has with every other bankrupt, or economically nonviable country in Europe. Furthermore 70% of all Scottish trade is done with the U.K. which will be subject to the same restrictions and tariffs as every other European country after 'independence'. The union with Scotland is a drag weight on the rest of the U.K., well shot of you. English referendum on whether _we_ still want the union, please!

What will Scotland become if they leave the UK, their main industry is oil, which will run out in about 50 years. Their economy is weak, they have a small population and they are heavily propped up by Westminster. Per person they receive significantly more funding than those living in England and I really doubt they will be able to afford the NHS and their free education system once they loose funding. Its a death sentence for Scotland and a total shame to see the UK loose some of its best people and most beautiful landscapes. We don't want to see Scotland leave and Scotland can't afford to leave England.

@Rocky Carlton You had your #GE and you chose #Tory. We had ours and we chose #SNP. We knew that by choosing #SNP we were choosing #EU over #UK and that #IndiRef2 would therefore be on the cards. Scotland told England that it wanted to remain in the EU. What part of that can you not understand? The last Indiref was based on Scotland remaining in the EU. Since you English decided to leave then that means we get to have the choice to stay and the only way we can achieve that is through Independence. Can you get your head round that or is that still to complicated for you?

Wow. Ok fine. Though Edward the 1st didn't conquer all of today's UK, he did half conquer Scotland, setting the tone for its eventual annexation. An aggressive Warlord King like that would feel sick seeing Scotland slip away on a mere referendum, prompted by Tory political stubbornness. Same thing could be said about Northern Ireland (and whatever Kings/Queens we want to credit for that conquered territory.) 500 years of stiff-upper-lip English resistance - and untold buckets of blood - might be all for naught if Ireland is allowed unite the whole island (so as to properly seal off England from the EU). The IRA ultimately wins if Ireland reunites. Losing Scotland and Ireland are only possibilities because of Brexit stubbornness

Perhaps it is the best thing for the EU, people will see what happens if you try to stand alone in global trade. Hope you learn something in the following 20 years. Now it is a real question if Scotland will want to stay, because now they are governed from London by unelected bureaucrats or leave it and join the EU.
