I love it when you guys watch slightly off-topic, yet on-topic stuff like this. Yeah, the idea that the fungus doesn't, in fact, take over the ant's brain is somehow worse. Not just because of the horrific experience for the ant, but because it almost implies that the fungus itself is "intelligent" enough that it knows how to puppeteer this foreign body, using all its separate limbs in tandem, etc.

Using realistic, if not probable, science in the show makes it even more chilling, I have seen this in nature shows before, and there is a patch of Fungus in Eastern Oregon that is over 2500 sqr acres and has been shown to send signals underground like in the show, so cool

If anything remotely similar to Last Of Us happened I think the effects would make people euphoric and want to get close to you. I don’t think it would make us as violent, but maybe be creepier because people would want be extra friendly and get up close and personal to spread the spores, so you’d have to stop/kill them for being too nice.

@greywolf845 Жыл бұрын
Parasitic fungus doesn’t have to be aware of what it’s doing. It just has to have the right evolved instinct, knowing how to develop where in the body and create the right fungal structures + what chemical processes to hijack. It’s not a matter of taking over our consciousness, but learning to influence us in a way that allows it to reproduce. It’s less effect in spider and mammal species because such animals are less common than ants, and the fungus that develops in those bodies has to learn how to grow in the new body systems as well, through information it gathers and natural selection

There's already a last of us theory based on this. Near the beginning chapters of the game, you can actually hear zombies crying and shout "no.....i cant", etc it was something like that. The person is actually trapped inside their zombified body. This only works for recently turned zombies though. After that, the person dies and cordyceps has full control of their body.

Short answer: No. It cannot. It can take over insects. Cordyceps is a type of parasitic fungus that infects insects and other arthropods, and uses them as a host to complete its lifecycle. The fungus enters the body of the host, grows inside it, and eventually kills it. In some cases, the fungus can alter the behavior of the infected host, causing it to act in ways that benefit the fungus's reproductive cycle, such as climbing to a high location and clinging to a leaf or twig before dying, which increases the chances of the fungus's spores spreading to new hosts. While it is true that some fungi, such as the genus Aspergillus, can cause infections in humans, these infections are not capable of controlling human behavior. Fungal infections in humans can cause a range of symptoms, including respiratory problems, skin rashes, and fever, but they cannot infect or control the human brain in the way that Cordyceps fungus can infect the brains of insects.

You should not be scared of cats because of this. While this parasite is harmful to babies its not the only one. Many parasite viruses and bacteria can seriously damage a growing fetus so you are going to have to be tested and treated regardless. Just make sure to stay healthy and the baby should be fine.

The answer is no since it doesn't commonly transfer from human to human and we are the top of the food chain. So we won't end up the meal of predator regularly enough as most parasites need to complete their complex life cycles. STIs are very successful at transmitting for a reason.
