Rose didn't make a mistake, the prop department did. They were told to make a raft that was too small for two people. But the prop guys turned out to be right, despite what MB says. Rose and Jack would still suffer from sever hypothermia with loss of muscle control. Two people keeping balance on the raft was difficult, as seen in the video. One or both of them would fall off and not be able to get back on again.

One thought about hypothermia: If both of them would have been on the improvised raft and cuddled together, their temperature even should have dropped a little slower, because they would warm each other (at least a little bit) - that might add some more minutes for the rescue. Or am I wrong here?

Your definently right, animals do this to stay warm in freezing temperatures. It seems they just didn't account for this.

@@allanshpeley4284 He was, but he also got his own divers with all the sensors and stuff to get it as accurate as possible to the props and still determined he would have died. It's still something people debate to this day even tho many have tested and got both sides of the results as well. Kinda funny how that turned out

One thing about the floating above water part is that the body isn't completely out of the water, it's still touching parts of the water which means it's constantly getting wet. Also, once the body temperature gets low enough that the muscles seize up, you'll no longer have the strength to hold onto the board, so if even a small wave comes along and knocks you off it, you're drowning. It's also unlikely the rescuers would be able to warm up her body quickly enough once they were able to reach her.

I see a couple of flaws. 1st.. Jamie's oak planks are of 'Green' oak. The ship used dry oak.. more buoyant. 2nd.. clothes worn by both were of silk, cotton, and wool. none of which are represented in the 1/4 scale. 3rd.. Though the salt mixture may have been a standard ratio.. the north Atlantic salt ratio is less because of the melting icebergs.

Just because they could theoretically tie a float under it doesn't mean that two people freezing to death in dire straits could think of that in time and have the physical mobility and strenght to do it. That is why they died.

True. Even if Jack and Rose still had the energy, presence of mind, and smarts to try the life vest under the plank trick, just taking the vest off Rose would put Rose at risk (not what Jack would want). Additionally, if they tried and iit didn't work, they'd likely both die. They had also been through a lot already that night and had been in cold water and cold air, even while on the ship. Being able to MacGyver the situation largely in the dark, in frigid waters, and not knowing if it would help or hurt, even if successful, would not be a likely choice. It would all need to be well secured, and fingers and hands especially don't work well in the cold. Lastly, it is Cameron's story, we're never able to change a character's behavior based on what we would do.

Jamie and Adam DIDN'T take into account the cold temperatures of the water and what it does to your muscles. If Jack tried to climb on also, he could have tipped over the door and VERY possibly not had enough strength to put Rose back on and try again

Now - the one thing I dispute here is they had the benefit of essentially - prep time. And when they got into the water they weren't dealing with the negative effects of hypothermia. Meaning - they had time to come up with a solution that Rose and Jack wouldn't have, and may not have been able to execute. I don't think two people suffering (at that point) mild Hypothermia would have been able to get into the water, tie the life preserver under it, then get back up onto the board.

the problem i have is that Jamie and Adam are big and healthy men with a combined weight of 170/180kg while Rose and Jack where small and skinny who probly had a combined 110kg, So they probly didn't need the life jacket underneath the board.

@@DanteKenchi Ah but I would argue - them being so small and skinny means they would be affected by the cold temperatures WAY faster. Meaning an argument could be made that even both of them getting onto the board and moving enough to distribute their weight so it doesn't sink (cuz remember, Balance is ALSO a really big factor that gets fixed by the life jacket) would have been too difficult for them to both do under those conditions.

I do wonder, obviously shivering is designed to help keep the body warm when it starts losing temperature, as they mention. If they simulated shivering, as would happen in a real person, would that have had an effect on the hypothermia testing.

I think having the strength to pull yourself up out of the freezing water onto that board without it tipping over would have been very difficult if not impossible. Also they didn’t factor in the fact that they were both in the water for some minutes and out in the cold for at least an hour prior to reaching the door.

the calm waters the test was run in did not account for open ocean conditions (not that they could have safely tested that without a massive budget).

Sometimes the narration on KZbin versions of the show is too quiet or only on the left. I'm almost certain the master copies of Mythbusters have the audio on separate tracks: one for the diagetic audio, one for the music, and one for the narrator. And when they upload these to KZbin, the mastering sometimes gets ruined

A human body generates heat, so doesn't just cool down at a constant rate like thermo man did. They would need a small heater in it to simulate the added heat the the body generates while cooling down from the cold water and air.

The one problem though is both would have been well to the point of being unconscious by 63 minute rescue based on the test with the air dummy being only slightly higher than if submerged bc both their clothes were still wet. So neither would be able to alert the rescue crew. So while they both "could" have survived their chance of rescue would be near 0 anyway.

Rose and Jack are smaller than these guys so they would fit better and weigh it down less, however... they had been running on pure adrenaline for hours. They were exhausted, traumatized and probably not thinking clearly. Definitely not able to engineer the life vest under the door, but also I think it's realistic that Jack would have given up in concern for Roses safety without keeping trying the tilting door situation

I feel like Jaime and Adam didn't really get a long well was cuz Adam wanted it to be like a scripted Bill Nye type kidish show and Jaime wanted to take a more serious approach to get to the root of the experiment without all of the theatrics. Could be way off, but I get that type of vibe from them talking in interviews.

Come on editor... film and video production 101, music at most should be set to -18 and dialogue should be -12. Though I prefer music at -20 and dialogue about -10. Which reminds me, if you need an editor, I would be more than happy to do it.

@@a_921 so basically, those numbers are the ideal DB levels, sound levels. Music should never overtake the dialogue. A good editor can "duck" the music to the dialogue, meaning lower the music every time someone talks.

Rose was what, 55kg? Same as Jack who was a small, skinny guy? That's a good 110kg, i'm sure Jamie and Adam are 85 to maybe 90kg, that's 170/180kg, so yeah it wouldn't be a problem to stay on it.

Hold on a second, Jack can survive a deadly plane crash with the posibility of one in a million, with severe burns, broken bones and dislocated organs, but can't survive being exposed to the cold water for a few minutes?

So, since this show must only for outdated American measurements. The modern easier to understand Celsius method, they were speaking around 28 degrees. Which is actually a lot warmer than I thought it would be. I thought the human body could go way cooler than that.

Ok there not in period cloths which would hold water and add extra weight. 2 it was butt cold and would be freezing after how long so an average can keep there brain in charge. Which when you hit that cold water you just start involuntary gasping for air. Which there not doing so there not in freezing conditions and not as heavy with water logged cloths.
