The Hammer of Dawn likely has different sizes for different combat applications. The ones used shortly after Emergence Day are the city killers. Designed to instantly flash fry entire cities. The ones used in the game are much smaller and used similar as a drone strike would be.

You've got the inverse square law completely wrong. Laser light is parallel, the inverse square law talks about like coming from a source like the sun where the light goes in all directions. If you go two times further from the sun than on earth you'll get a quarter of the light energy but if the sun were a laser it would basically be the same.

And another Day we played Story mode together, I didn't know their names and didn't know anything about the story, he selected Which ever Act and Chapter, I was like these Guys are Fighting to Get Evil Monsters Killed in order to save their world, I was okay barely killed some, but my Bro Killed most of em, we did act 3, act 4, and act 5 fighting General Raam, I didn't exactly know brother's plan, I just went forward to attack General Raam, and got struck down, and Bryan got struck down too we failed a few Times, then managed to distract him and use the Turret got Raam Killed. Some other days we fought Raam. Then I saw him play Gears of War 2, then when I finally got my First Xbox 360 I had my father talk to him managed to get the game, I played it learning the basics, becoming better. But when I saw my brother using that Laser Weapon I was wondering What is that gun can't they use that on these monsters? And When I first put the disc in my first Xbox 360, I even saw the Intro listening to that woman talking about how the Locust Monsters attacked. And Then I saw the Hammer of Dawn Energized Enhanced Big Laser Destroy Locust and Human in many big Cities, and ever since that, I have always wondered for years what is that City the Hammer of Dawn Destroyed? and will we see it again? Will we go to that City? And When Gears of War 3 first trailer came out and I saw that bearded guy Oh man I feel bad for that Bearded guy whoever he is. My brother said Gabriel, that's Dom, I was like oh really? And that City I was like That is the same city the Hammer of Dawn Destroyed. I was right we finally got to see that city again. This is the most Interesting part of that trailer, many of us Gears of War big gamers were most likely wondering Will we go to that city the Hammer of Dawn Destroyed? Then when we see that trailer, Our Questions were totally Answered Yes, and I wanted to know more about the Hammer of Dawn and Char City, I asked My Brother Can't they just use the Hammer of Dawn on the locust? Bryan Said Gabriel yeah, they already used it, they tried, they destroyed cities, Killing lots of Humans and Locust. but more locust just kept coming. In case the Hammer of Dawn was real they would TOTALLY Make many Satellites Enhanced LASER Even More Powerful than Nuclear plus Hydrogen Bombs ever were, they would make America Nuclear Bombing on Japan just be the beginning. But Griffin's people go to far they're dumbasses they're not the only ones that lost people, they're screwed being wussy Bitches, they can go to hell. They are More than Enough Powerful to Destroy More Than 1 City, could Destroy 2 States, could get even entire small Countries such as North Korea Destroyed. Get Vietnam Destroyed. They Destroyed 90 Percent plant life on the planet. The way they Killed Each People made their bodies into mummified ashes pumice remains, it is just like Pompeii, But Much MUCH Worse they would get incenerated. IT'S A MASSACRE! Zhould North America have these weapons We Americans would have incinerated towns, cities, even Countries to get enemies Destroyed getting hostile Monsters Destroyed, Aliens exterminated, or even get Human type terrorists Annihilated. But not exactly this, we don't sacrifice many innocent people to get each cities of Enemies Destroyed, we would have evacuated everyone or almost everybody, but not sacrifice anybody except Soldiers that are willingly to die, never sacrifice civilians but unless the Civilians want to die for the War but mostly sacrifice soldiers. But the worst part was even Children died in those Cities, 10 Billions of Humans, Thousands of Lambent, Millions of Locust Died in the Hammer Striked Cities. In real life that's what we would do save everyone or almost everyone, sacrifice soldiers and civilians only when Absolutely Necessary but mostly soldiers then get Evil Countries cities of Evil Enemies DESTROYED!

Imulsion burns extremely slowly so you would not need as much fuel as you think. Its why the chainsaws on the lancers rarely if ever need to be refueled so the fuel tanks can be tiny.

I personally feel that working around the heat issue wouldn't pose as much as a challenge compared to the amount of shock produced from the impact of the pod when it strikes earth surface. That's a lot of force for the pods infrastructure and the human body to sustain.

ODSTs would probably work, spaceships that are designed to be reusable enter the atmosphere the same way. They simply fall down and open parachutes at the end. Heating is reduced by a) using a blunt shape (if something with a tip is used, that tip heats up a lot, blunt shapes create a shockwave that keeps the heat away from the vehicle), b) coating the ship/drop pod/whatever in heat resistant materials (space shuttles use ceramic plates which dont have any gaps between them because those would let the shuttle burn up) (which have to endure about 1700°C during descent) and *maybe* c) ablative coating, something coated on the hull that burns up during descent and thereby absorbs heat (yes, that cools the vehicle down, as stupid as it sounds, but it can probably damage the heat resistant material below, which might make the vehicle only usable once, which is bad for spaceships but possibly not important for drop pods). The atmospheric drag causes the descending object to slow down, and in the end, be slow enough to land (something like 500 km/h maybe, I dont know much about that part, but parachutists are up to 200 km/h fast before using ther parachute, so I think I might be correct) by deploying parachutes or starting thrusters at the bottom (which have to be retractable because they would destroy the vehicle during the beginning of the descent). The drop pods could even be sped up with thrusters on top of them during the beginning of the descent, as long as the bottom has enough heat resistance. Or in short: Yes, drop pods would work.

According to Atomic Rocket (a website on hard sci fi), lasers are not subject to the inverse square law, but are subject to diffraction. As such the laser doesn't have to be nearly as powerful as you guesstimate in this video, but it does need to be fairly powerful. Also infrared lasers are not significantly attenuated by atmosphere, the US airforce did develop the airborne laser and it was a megawatt class laser that was capable of destroying missiles at long range. If you want a killsat that can reliably destroy armored targets on the ground, you probably do need a gigawatt class laser in orbit.

The HOD seems more like a particle beam projector than a laser weapon. After all, have we ever seen two or more different laser beams crossing each other’s paths and then causing a single thermonuclear explosion? It would make more sense if the HOD was an array of satellites with powerful particle accelerators bolted to them. Get something moving fast enough and even a grain of sand would have the same destructive force as a tactical nuclear missile.

The Hammer does not use imulsion as a power source. If this were so, the Hammer would have stopped functioning long before it did circa 15 A.E. It uses imulsion crystals to focus the beam, and likely uses solar cells to create the energy for the beam. I can only assume that the imulsion crystals cut down the power consumption dramatically.

if emulsion is like plutonium it would carry 1 billion joules of potential energy per litre. ... if it is some exotic matter that allows a much larger percentage of its mass energy to be converted it could carry up to 90 billion joules of energy per kg, and if it was stored at say a density of 10 that would mean just 1 litre of emulsion would be good for firing it for 10 seconds. The beam seen might be simply the waste products being beamed out in a beam of superheated relativistic ions in some kind of magetic bottle or it might be that the emulsion reaction allows pumping of a incredibly powerfull laser like a gamma laser as well which is the main part that delivers the energy. The lasing theory is interesting because emulsion clearly has some optical properties like generating visible light purely on its own.

Nukes cause more damage? No. The power of the multiple hammer strikes within one of the largest cities on Sera caused damage worth close to 100 nukes. This also leads to another well known theory that different sattelites have different amounts of power. This is seen as a comparison from the prologue vs gameplay. The sattelite would no doubt have to be brought down to recycle the fuel every so often. Don't worry about having governmental laws about orbital weapons because after eliminating the UIR, The Cog have known to be the only government and defense on the planet. The imulsion is also a chemical that grows stronger over time like a disease and parasite as mentioned in Gears of War 3. Provided the satellite panels are changed and reviewed every decade or the fuel source is burned up, recycled, and replaced, the Hammer of Dawn's requirements for materials, engineering, and power could be extremely likely on the planet Sera.

The hammer of dawn is not destructive enough to be classed as a WMD. A 250lb bomb is just as destructive. Unless it was solar or fusion powered and did not need a chemical "fuel source" to run the weapon it is in actuality pretty wasteful. Not to mention you would need an entire net of platforms since changing, speeding up, or slowing down one platforms orbit would waste a lot of resources.
