1:42 It's interesting hearing you question if there are landlords in C17, in hl2: episode 1 there's an unused Alyx voiceline where she mentions something along the lines of "Looks like we found the landlord's apartment." in a way that insinuates that someone got special treatment from the Combine and had a nicer place to live.

@@jinxsterr_Dispenser3741 I might have misremembered that one, it's difficult to keep track of because there's a bunch of unused dialogue for Ep1, some still in the game files and some from old builds, for example there's Alyx lines where she comments on a shrine someone made for Dr. Breen in a giftshop, a secret museum containing "treasures of human history", there's also a version of the stalker train sequence where Alyx actually drops the "F" bomb.

In half-life alyx, it was shown that civilians can get a job as hazmat cleanup/engineers. Hell, even civil protection is a job for civilians. Though aside from that, it's not clear what other jobs you could get in city 17

I'd assume factory jobs making combine weapons, packaging rations, armor and clothing, cleaning streets/buildings, already listed jobs like civil protection, hazmat teams, engineering jobs, and many more

One thing I always wondered bout Highway and sandtraps houses (the small and empty ones without internal walls) is how furnished they would be, I can only imagine a single bed, table with a set of 2 chairs, occasional fireplace to keep warmth and thats it (also the second house in HW 17 got a room with a bucket so we got a toilet) I always imagined these were holiday properties that families use for vacation becouse no sane person would live there in 2024 without anything

Yeah but if we assume the conbine invasion happend in the early 2000s then that means all architecture is from then. Living standards from 2000 even to 2010 increased so much that a place that small would suffice for the people of that time

In defence of the Combine, they haven't technically banned sex. They've just inhibited the sex drive and ability to reproduce, neither of which are great, but it means you don't have to worry about supporting a family.
