Reading Deuteronomy for rhe first time as a new mother (ages ago) convicted my soul and changed my life. I created a family culture of being in the house and with my children. We homeschooled and homestead. We figured out how to live on one income (which was very low) buying new socks was an extravagant thing for a few years. Growing food became out entertainment together. It also gave us many opportunities for praising God. To be daily visibly dependent upon him, and understand the parables of Jesus better by living in an agrarian lifestyle.

I work from home. My half basement floor is my one woman spa as I am a Massage Therapist! It is nice not having to go to an office or pay rent!! I make my own schedule too!!

I can't say that working outside of the home was all bad, but I liked the four 10 hour workdays best. What gets hard is off shifts, overtime, and having long travel times to get to work. I think having that third day of not having to go outside the home was very helpful for getting thing done at home. I think using Sunday to rest is more likely to happen with a four day work week. If you have to split you time between home and work, which some or all of us do at some point, finding a four vs five day work week is a great compromise.

I do appreciate the idea that being close to home and working in a setting that is family centered is an ideal situation. I know that I love that idea and want it for myself. But I have found that not everyone thrives in such a situation. Creative people, people who feel part of the global community, exceptional people with minds that easily grasp the ideas in mathematics, engineering, astrophysics, who love travel and discovering new places and ways of living, etc. appreciate the technologies and opportunities of the industrial economy. We need to find a balance that allows for all of us to thrive, be happy, challenged in a good way and be able to contribute on every level. I know what I want for myself. And I hope that each individual will have the opportunity to discover that in a world that can embrace the good qualities of every way of life, not just the one I believe is "best".

The marketing and finding people to buy is the hardest part, takes the most time and will make or break you which is scary for me. Already working 60hrs/week at regular job.

You mentioned, earlier in this video, that someone was making sourdough bread out of their home. And that it got too big that they had to open up a bakery in town. I think that is a BIG pitfall that one would need to be careful of falling into. Kind of totally defeats the purpose of working out of your home. Because now, you have to leave the home to go to the bakery, or whatever business you have.

personally, if my home business was so successful that it could no longer sustain the demand for products, I would just charge more. the farm that we get our milk from was $100 for the herdshare per the year and $16 per gallon. next year it is going up to $120 per year and $18 per gallon 😮 b u t... she has a wait list. a long one. and the benefits of raw milk, plus the bonus of a very experienced mentor and friend who can help us on our journey into homesteading, is worth it to us.

NIce professional business cards handed out everywhere you go is inexpensive and really great marketing, along with word of mouth. Spent one summer at a a farmers market handed out a whole box of card, has kept me busy ever since. I do mending and alterations. Tried online advertising when I moved to a new area. NOT cost effective. Got NO people from that and cost over 500.
