One point you seem to have missed - soldiers of the vast majority of time periods had a far greater chance of surviving than the civilians occupying the same danger spaces in space and time.

It must’ve been scary as an Napoleonic soilder, with the man eating zombies and whatnot. Must’ve been scary seeing your comrades turn into cannibals.

Especially those zappers, having to be put out of their misery by their ex-comrades, and those vital runners, fast as lighting and strong as a horse, tackling its ex-comrades, usually neither survived. I cant imagine the true sadness it must have been for the survivors to put down their comrades. I cant imagine the true sadness of watching your comrades blow up from those barrels. Nor the true sadness of the survivors helplessly watching their comrades die by fire from the lamplighters, unable to save them by the crowd of cannibals.
