Watch the Making Of: • How Top Gun: Maverick ...
Cocky Science Aviator Jake Roper (that’s me!) feels the NEED FOR SPEED as he struggles to overcome his arrogance and work as a team to take down the enemy while also flying head on into the deceptively complex concepts behind the physics of flight. Jake will be pushed to the limit while investigating what happens to the human body when subjected to extreme G-forces, intense acrobatic maneuvers, and breaking the sound barrier…without an airplane?

The experiment with Stapp that caused all that damage was a deceleration test. Rockets fired to slow him down super fast and that's what caused all that damage. He recovered and was fine, though, proving that the human body was tougher than we thought. Dude was a legend.
@Nippernator
@Nippernator 2 жыл бұрын
I can't believe Jake messed this one up. The whole point of the test was to subject the body to extreme G forces for testing the ejection seats. Although I don't think it was rockets that provided the deceleration but a pool of water at the end of the track.

14:53 i have to criticize the part about breaking the sound barrier with no jet around. the injuries of that john stapp guy from the 60s were caused by the deceleration forces of 46,2g. the speed itself is not dangerous, as felix baumgartner demonstrated in 2012 when he made a base jump from almost 39 km altitude and broke the sound barrier during his fall. the only things that can be dangerous during such speeds is debris (dust or insects) hitting you
@giannizen3775
@giannizen3775 2 жыл бұрын
Tell that to Capt. Brian Udell of the U.S. Air Force... If you eject at supersonic speeds you are most likely going to die, and not because of insects or debris, but because of the immense force of the impact you are going to have with air. Felix had a suit that protected him, these guys just have a helmet that is going to rip right off when you eject and a simple flight suit.
@elliott7268
@elliott7268 2 жыл бұрын
@@giannizen3775 you're missing the point. It's not the speed that is dangerous, it's the deceleration you would encounter instantly from the force of your body hitting the air outside of the aircraft.

Small mistake regarding the effect of breaking the sound barrier outside a plane. The injury you described on John Stapp were the result of deceleration experiment (he reached 38G) and not the supersonic flying itself. Baumgartner during his freefall from 40km of altitude also crossed the sound barrier out of a plane but without such injuries.

is that death scene really accurate? that seems like a major design flaw, why would anyone make such an ejection system where it could get caught up in the canopy.
@kristofferbeder
@kristofferbeder 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not a problem when the plane is moving forward. Only because they were in an flat spin was the canopy not able to be blown far enough away. Also, it’s Hollywood. Even in a flat spin they would still have a significant forward velocity.
@livethefuture2492
@livethefuture2492 2 жыл бұрын
@@kristofferbeder thanks for clarifying, just asking because i thought usually the canopy is ejected away from the aircraft with the help of explosive bolts, and launched away from the aircraft, then the ejection seats are ejected up and away from the aircraft, when its clear from obstruction.
@krakenburger56
@krakenburger56 2 жыл бұрын
@@livethefuture2492 That would take too long. If your aircraft starts lawndarting into the ground uncontrollably and you are only a few hundred feet off the ground wanna get out as fast as possible and that means getting away from tne aircraft almost instantly after the canopy blows. Any injuries caused by the canopy is better than death. Nowadays, aircraft like the F-35 instead shatter their canopy so less time is needed for the canopy to fly away and instead if getting slammed in the head by some glass you will just get a bunch of glass shards in your helmet.
@davidcruz8667
@davidcruz8667 2 жыл бұрын
It is not accurate, you will never hit the canopy during an ejection unless the canopy does not blow when your seat goes, and ejection seats have canopy breakers on top to assist in going through a canopy that doesn't separate. If the canopy blows first as scheduled, you will never be anywhere near it when the seat goes.
@Hustler9g
@Hustler9g 2 жыл бұрын
Ok so look up ward carol on KZbin. He is a real F 14 RIO and he says that the f14 did have a problem where the rio seat would eject too soon after the canopy and the standard procedure was to blow the canopy first (there is a lever that does does the canopy by itself). the reply you got is partially correct as more speed might pull the canopy away faster but there was a real issue with the ejection sequence timing and a realy guy died.

Great video ! Just a little detail .. @ 5:07 The Blue Angels planes are F/A-18 Hornet, which are equipped with two General Electric F404-GE-402 engines. These are afterburning turbofans which means that most of the trust comes from the "bypass" air (see bypass ratio), not from the hot gases. What you described would be a turbojet. Fuel is injected on demand in the afterburner for added trust in afterburning turbofans.

One problem with Jake's flight physics. An wing doesn't create lift due to air pushing up from the bottom. Lift is created because the top of the wing is curved causing air to travel further between the leading and trailing edges compared to the bottom of the wing, thus faster over the top. As with the venturi principle, an increase in velocity produces a proportional decrease in pressure and vice versa. Therefore, the faster moving air above the wing creates a vacuum that literally sucks the plane up. At the same time, the bottom of the wing is experiencing lesser air velocity which corresponds to higher pressure. As long as the effect of this differential is greater than gravity's effect on the plane, due to thrust, it remains airborne.

This is an interesting idea and I can see the passion and effort that went into it. I value your work and I respect your ideas and efforts, so I mean to offer my respectful critique: I think you're trying to do too much at once here. There's a fictional narrative with dramatic moments and developing characters, but comic 4th-wall breaking moments dilute my investment, and the need to pause and transition to science discussion breaks up the story you're telling. The need to skip around to hit particular dramatic moments from top gun also makes it difficult for me to engage with the dramatic story. None of that is necessarily bad, but a lot of time (and a lot of talent and resources) go into the dramatic story, while it also breaks up and spaces out the science elements in turn. Personally I think I would enjoy a deeper, more technical presentation focused on the science, or a pure fictional story about a top gun competition, more than a little of each blended together. That's my personal take and I hope something of what I've said is helpful to you in the future. If you think I'm totally wrong that's cool too. I hope this series is a great success and I hope it's the start of big things for you. Stay loving and imaginative and kind, and be well.

I love your channel Jake but factually this one was way off the mark. First, the explanation of lift was straight up wrong. No mention of the shape of the aerofoil relative windspeeds or differential pressures. Second major flaw was showing the effects of passing the sound barrier without protection. John Stapps injuries were as a result of the massive deceleration he was submitted to upon hitting the deceleration pool, not the shockwave. There were also a few minor things like the jettison opening the canopy as opposed to just detonating it. All in all, entertaining, but not accurate whatsoever.
