I exchanged into a nightmare. Be warned, people are usually swapping for the wrong reason, neighbours from hell😢
@CatCat-v5g2 күн бұрын
This is why I won't do it, there's usually a negative reason for the move. I don't fancy someone else's psycho ex lurking, stalking me or banging down my door at midnight a few weeks after I've swapped & moved in. I already have my own noisy neighbours (at least I 'know' their inconsiderate routine), Idw to learn how new noisy neighbours operate too! Better the devil you know sometimes. I'd rather buy the house I'm in now (with its hefty discount), do it up, & sell for a nice profit in a few years..👌
@Thailand-mt9op2 күн бұрын
@ absolutely. I moved in, with in one week, there was a knife crime, one of the neighbours was gang affiliated, 3 months later the armed police raided the apartment next door, it was being used as a brothel with young Eastern European girls rescued who had been trafficked. I am completely traumatised, I left my beautiful, top floor apartment by the sea for a living hell in a posh neighbourhood in Chelsea. Huge mistake😥

I lived in an older style council hose for 25 years. 2 daughters and 50 foster children! When all the kids had "flown ", I swooped to a 2 bed bungalow. I was happy, as were the other family. I could have stayed in the big house, possibly earned much by taking in many lodgers?! Morally felt wrong, waited years for my family home, could I sleep if I inflicted such on another family? I got a lovely 2 bed bungalow in the centre of the village, they got a big family home. Win, win. 15 years later, I am happy, they are as well!

Council estates used to be lovely - mostly, but not so much any more. My area changed for the worse and pretty much everywhere else was similar. In the end I downsized to a privately rented home in a lovely area, which was a tough decision as it was more expensive, but for me, after 3 years, I'm still delighted where I ended up. It was tiring going through the process and all the disappointment, but once I decided to pay the extra, which doesn't leave me with much, I had a much wider choice and for me it was worth it.

As an American, I have so many questions. So, these people all lived in council houses? So, this is government assisted rent? They can make modifications even though it's government assisted? How can they afford to make modifications if they're on assistance? Is it easy to get government assistance? And this bedroom tax, is that only with council houses? So confusing lol.

Council housing or public housing as it is in USA works differently in the UK, yes you have to be on a low income but that doesn't mean you have to be on state welfare, lots of people are in fulltime work but earn under the threshold so still eligible for council housing. In the US it is prodominently government assistants and do not have the right to buy the home as we do here in UK.
@apinkfrontdoor25933 күн бұрын
Bedroom tax is taken for anyone claiming benefits council or private rent if they are living in a home too big for their needs. To get a council housing you need to be classed as homeless, you get a property faster if you have a dependent. The property used to be for life and you could buy it from the local attorney at a later date. Things are changing now and this government have slashed the discount to make it harder to buy. (I grew up in council housing and a good part of my adult life too… I’m have got out of the system and now own my own home)

@happycatyoutube2 күн бұрын
OK, so here's some answers for you 😊 yes, council houses are mostly owned by the government, and the rent is usually just a fraction of private rent from normal landlords, so a 1 bed apartment from a landlord where I live could be around £1200 a month privately, but a council apartment is just £400 a month. So a huge discount. Most people in council homes do work, it's just what we earn in wages isn't enough to pay for private. So only low income people can get a council home. (And because the cost of living is so bad here, you could work full time and still be classed as low income) There's usually some other requirements for moving too which can give you priority, like being disabled. But everyone who wants a council house will go onto a council waiting list, and you have to wait for a place to come up. But if you're in low priority, you could be waiting 5-10 years! So beacause council rent it cheal, people might still have enough left in the income to renovate and decorate. Most people would shop in cheaper store to decorate too. Council properties are allowed to be changed and redecorated, and shelving can be put up and stuff, but if you wanted to do a major change, then you have to ask for permission. But council houses are pretty relaxed with the rules and most of them allow pets too 😊 council houses are great but, as you can imagine, the waiting list can be many many years, and we have a housing crisis right not too, so there's not enough houses for everyone who needs one 😢

What's social housing got to do with affording a large family?
