I can answer the question as an Australian who's laws are oh so extremely strict. Switchblades, butterfly knives, gravity knives etc are illegal is because they are concealed blades that open with one hand. Imagine a scenario where a lone cop is wrestling with you. The cop gets a control of one of your arms. In the tangle of bodies you get a hand free and open the blade which is -- 1) blade in a handle so double the length a fixed blade that's equally hard to conceal (3" vs 6" blades are a big difference). -- 2) Like Dank said it feels like being punched so in the most extreme example that lone cop could be mortally wounded stabbed like 5-10 times before they even realise what's up and switch to a firearm/taser/baton/call for urgent help. Guy could get his licks in then surrender at gunpoint and just wait the 40 seconds for the officer to bleed out. Basically if the blade retracts in any capacity and can be opened with one hand - they esp. don't want you having it. These laws are designed to effectively halve the lengths of knives used in stabbings. That's the logic anyway edit: stab proof vests are also classified as prohibited weapons over here
