How about adding on to this by flipping our hands over? Both palms up until 1023 (because of 0), then at 1024 you flip your first hand palm side down. Reset your fingers and go up to 2047 the same way, then flip your first hand palm up while your second hand goes palm down. Then up to 3071, and you put both hands palm down and keep counting up to 4095. Should we add another bit by swapping hand placements?

Okay, so I found out the highest you can theoretically count on your fingers are about 2^281474943156225. Hear me out: There are six parts on each finger, three sections and three creases dividing the sections. Now count each part, which is six. If you use binary system, you can count up to 2^6-1 (63). And since you have 4 fingers (note that we will NOT be using our thumbs since they don't have the same amount of parts, we will actually use the thumbs to count the parts), you can count to 2^24-1 (16777215) with one hand. Now what about the other hand, you might ask? This is where it gets interesting. You can count up to 2^24-1 with that hand too, add both of those and you can count to 33554430. Now obviously, that is not really what we are looking for, but say for each 2^24-1 you complete on your first hand, count up once on your other hand. This can be repeated 2^24-1 times, and if you multiply the numbers, you get 281474943156225. This is already a BIG number, but obviously we're counting in binary, so this is actually 2^281474943156225. Which is about 5.8 multiplied by ten, 84732400917837 times. You'll probably take enough time for the universe to end a bajillion times but why not know that you can count that high?

people always look at binary as something scary, but yeah, this is literally it. another way of thinking about it: y'know how once you pass 9 when counting, you add another digit? imaging base 5: > 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, ..., 41, 42, 43, 44, 100, ... it's not really that complex. same thing with binary: > 1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 110, 111, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, ...
@gswcooper7162Ай бұрын
Of course, the problem with this - and I've tried - is that you have to be able to move each finger completely independently to make some of the binary representations. My middle, ring, and little fingers on each hand are at least partially connected to each other (in terms of musculature) and can't raise each finger separately.

I use my own counting system that can count up to 99. The way I do it is just counting to 5 with one hand from thumb to pinky then put down them in the same order. This gives 9 different hand combinations and when it reaches 10, I reset my hand to 0 and I count my other hand the same way. It's like a base-10 counting system. Here's examples: Left/right hand 0 - no fingers up 1 - thumb up 2 - thumb and index up 3 - thumb index and middle up 4 - all fingers except pinky is up 5 - all fingers 6 - thumb down 7 - thumb and index down 8 - thumb index and middle down 9 - pinky is the only one up 10 - no fingers up and add one to the other finget

I once came up with an approach that may be easier to convert to decimal: Encode each digit with 1 or 3 bits. Use the rest to tell which digits are from which codepage. If all are with 3 bits each, the last one is one value. Otherwise, it's the other one. Then, the 2 bits before it tell which of the digits is represented with 1 bit in 3 of their 4 configurations. In the remaining configuration, the 2 bits before it tell how it is. (If all 3 digits are represented with 1 but each, that gives 2 extra bits you can use for the remaining 24 numbers, although I haven't come up with how)
