For 563, the round Rachel couldn’t finish was possible if you say; 8*4*8=256 6x50=300 256+300=556 556+7=563 Or you could say; 8+7=15 15x6x50=4500 4500+4=4504 4504/8=563

I was easily able to get 562 on the last numbers round, but I reckon 563 was a bit of a tough cookie. 1 large is usually quite easy on the whole, normally it's the more elaborate choices that result in Rachel not getting it in the time...

I am pretty sure its puzzling because it contains 2 prime numbers in the conventional ways of solving it: The 11 to get from 50 -> 550, but then requires a 13 to get back up to 563.

In the first numbers round, I saw Ross' solution and had these alternatives: 25 x 3 = 75 75 - 10 = 65 65 x 6 = 390 9 - 8 = 1 390 + 1 = 391 8 x 3 = 24 24 - 9 = 15 25 x 15 = 375 375 + 10 + 6 = 391 25 + 10 = 35 8 + 3 = 11 35 x 11 = 385 385 + 6 = 391 In the second numbers round, I spotted Rachel's solution before the clock began ticking, so I could spend all the time on this solution: 75 x 3 = 225 225 + 1 = 226 226 x 7 = 1582 100 x 6 = 600 1582 - 600 = 982 If there are any other solutions, they're _really_ well hidden. In the third numbers round, I definitely did _not_ see Rachel's solution at all. Instead, I assumed she was going to do this: 100 - 25 = 75 8 / 8 = 1 10 - 1 = 9 75 x 9 = 675 675 - 4 = 671 And I also had these: 100 + 8 + 8 = 116 10 - 4 = 6 116 x 6 = 696 696 - 25 = 671 100 - 8 = 92 92 x 8 = 736 736 - 25 = 711 10 x 4 = 40 711 - 40 = 671 In the final numbers round, I came up with an absolutely insane solution for 563: 8 + 7 = 15 50 x 15 = 750 750 x 6 = 4500 4500 + 4 = 4504 4504 / 8 = 563 The logic of it is that 25 x 3 x 7.5 is 562.5, and I know this because I've done all sorts of four-large puzzles where I've multiplied 75 x 75 for 5625. 8 is 2^3, that means it cancels with the 50 (25 x 2) for 25, with the 6 (3 x 2) for 3, and then divides again by 2, which in my mind divided 15 to make 7.5. Thus I was at 1/10th (562.5) of 75 x 75 = 5625. Now I only had to find 0.5 to add on before dividing, but I had an unused 4 and I was dividing by 8. So pop the 4 on, and then divide, and you have your answer. I don't know if there are any other solutions, but I'm chuffed about getting just that _one_ .

I was very happy with getting 1 away on the last numbers round. 563 was possible a different way, but it took a checker to find it... It involved making a 256 out of the two 8s and 4, which is more akin to a 6-small solution than a 1 large, then adding the 7 and 300 (from the 50 and 6). Quite a convoluted solution as well, and one that would stump even the best Countdown players, so I'm not surprised about Rachel not getting it, and kudos for getting a solution yourself (that wasn't even in the checker I use).

@@TheSpotify95 Thanks! I'm surprised that the checker you use didn't give this as a solution, because it's viable. I didn't break any _Countdown_ rules. But perhaps it's designed to exclude solutions that go over three digits at any point in the calculation. If that's the case, it wouldn't be able to get this problem that the computer recently threw at me: 100, 75, 50, 25, 7, 6 --> 970. There's only one solution and it has to go into five digits: 75 - 6 = 69 69 x 50 = 3450 3450 x 7 = 24150 24150 + 100 = 24250 24250 / 25 = 970 If you want to try that on your solver, you can see if it will calculate solutions that go up to four or five digits.

I found another one for 563, a bit easier. Start with 50 x 6 = 300 Then do 8 x8 = 64 Then 64 x 4 = 256 (Sometimes thinking in bits can be helpful) Then add 256 + 300 = 556. Then add the 7 = 563. Cheers! I wasn't surprised Rachel didn't get this one. This one was quite tough.
