Here's a fun fact about this episode. I just finished reading Alex's book "Wordwatching" where he talks quite a bit about this appearance. By pure coincidence, he actually knew the other contestant, Jeremy, having met him several years earlier and singlehandedly inspired him to start studying Latin. I mean, what are the odds of them going against each other on Countdown?? I had seen this episode before but this blew my mind. Also: if you like Alex and/or you like words, READ THAT BOOK! It's so good!

Pretty cool that Carol Vorderman would go on to appear in one of the Taskmaster New Years Treats over 10 years on from this. Alex's insane growth from here with Taskmaster just goes to show you never know how big your future might get.

Could someone double-check my calculation? 9x75=675, then 100+50=150, then 150/25=6, then 6/2=3 and finally 675+3 for 678?
