I used to machine Tie-Rods ends out of mnemonic SS for the nuclear industry. They were 42 feet long with a dia. X .395"/.402" . They were roller boxed to size on a Herbert 2D capstan lathe. We had to machine the ends to tight tolerance. They made great pokers for coal fires when the scrap ones were cut down. We ran them with the horrid brown cutting oil. This was in 1970. Keep up the good work.

nice to see some large lathes in action, I was only looking up Craven Lathes only this morning. They made some whoppers! A small local engineering firm has just closed here, been going since 1962. I got my bridgeport 20 yrs ago from there, I'm just in negotiations about a horizontal mill, Its sad Britain has lost so much engineering industry.

David great job using your trepanning tool to counter bore provided your still in tolerance that way for required counter bore! With all your available lathes, I would have a second lathe set up with conventional boring bar to finish the counter bore, that way you don't have to tear down your trepan setup, just move the work piece.

I'm guessing he runs a DTI along the top and the front. It would need to be attached to a suitable shaped block to run along the bed guideways (maybe the inside of the rear shears) though, because the carriage is not available, so it's an interesting question.

@@userwl2850 I was just going to type the same thing and see the comment pinned... My other suggestion is, instead of moving the nose over, creating the taper from sliding the tool thru the offset steady rest - could you bolt on a wider insert holder tool to the bar, for this job? Making that would let you run the bar straight thru a centered steady rest, and the longer tubes would not experience any taper... And seems that making a wider insert holder once would save you about 18 hours.... Plausible?
@Gottenhimfella4 жыл бұрын
@@kwasg3 I had the same thought about the (reverse conical) taper from slewing the trepanning tool. I guess if the counterbore is shallow and not much bigger in diameter than the bore diameter, and the shaft of the trepanning tool is long enough in comparison to the bore, it would stay within tolerance....

"counter boring with a Trepanning tool" Err, I don' think so ! You appear to be boring with a boring bar.
@userwl28504 жыл бұрын
???? It's definitely a Trepanning tool... I trepanned the hole with it first.. not sure what you mean 🤔
@millomweb4 жыл бұрын
@@userwl2850 To trepan, you don't have a hole to start with. A trepanning tool cuts the core out, leaving it in one piece. To enlarge a hole as you're doing in the video, you use a boring bar. And that's precisely what you have. There are 2 types of boring bar - static - like yours and rotary - where the cutter is place in a rotating head at the end of the boring bar.
@emma.j.nation4 жыл бұрын
@@millomweb have a look at the video again, especially at 1:30 onwards - you can clearly see the tool is hollow, so has space for the solid core it cuts out. That’s trepanning in my book.
@Gottenhimfella4 жыл бұрын
@@emma.j.nation You are exactly right. pmailkeey seems to be confusing the name of the tool with the name of the operation. DW is using a trepanning tool, to do (in the second part of the clip) a (counter)boring operation, exactly as it says on the label. I suppose it does LOOK like a boring bar (although unfeasibly large in relation to the hole) to anyone who wasn't paying attention to the first part of the clip.
@millomweb4 жыл бұрын
Well spotted @@emma.j.nation Having looked again, I have also noticed the other cutting tip for the tool - so yes, it does appear to be a trepanning tool ! Used properly, that's going to take one very big cut - in two halves ! Thanks.
